Hi! To find a room in Toronto you could use Kijiji.ca, Craigslist.org, or Facebook. You'd be looking under the "rooms and shares" category. You can even Google "rooms and shares Toronto" and you'll be on the right track.
Toronto is generally very safe. There are a few areas that some people definitely avoid like Moss Park and you can find those neighbourhoods by Googling the "dangerous" areas of Toronto.
As you're an international students I'm not sure what materials you'd need to rent. I'm also not sure how to get a really reliable place even with visiting one as sharing a place can be unpredictable.
Toronto has many, many international students. Maybe they have a Facebook group? Hopefully your school would be able to provide this essential information you're after?

Renting a bedroom isn't that much. I am in a two bedroom apartment and renting it at 1300 per month and it's gorgeous, furnished. I can get a person to live here and charge them 650 per month! No credit checks! York Mills area apartment/condo!
That's great! Once you get out of downtown, the rent generally comes down. I''m sure I'll eventually get out of the core some day.
