- Guide to Grym boss combat in Baldur's Gate 3. The Boss at the Adamantine Forge. Tips how to defeat him easily in just a few turns. It's one of the easiest boss fights in BG3 if you know what to do. Grym, the Adamantine Golem is Level 8 boss and has lots of health. But with this strategy you'll be able to defeat him fast even while being under-leveled all with proper positioning.
Grym is immune to damage if the Lava is not active. So if you can't deal damage to him and wonder how to remove Grym's immunity to damage, you need to turn on the level lever.

Thank you so much for this detailed guide, I was getting so confused as to why the second hammer was doing zero damage, and no other guide besides yours that I could find would explain that you need to wait another turn for him to get back up in order to be able to damage him again with the hammer! I also didn't know that you could just shoot the lever, I was just running up to it and pulling it!
this fight is so frustrating and the golems reactions vary wildly between difficulties.
You can try, in the case it doesn't work, fight time! I'll try it like that in my next playthrough.

It can be a pain but I did it on tactician and it only took me a couple of turns just got to keep him in the middle thats the only part that tou got to worry about the rest is gravy

@@SpookyFairyI basically did the same thing, I used sanctuary instead of invisibility, and had one character stand next to the lever rather than someone shooting it. Ended up having to sacrifice poor lae'zel to the slammer to get the killing blow off cus the boss was being stubborn with it's positioning :)
THE TUTORIAL THAT I NEEDED!!!! I've been stuck with the fact that after the first hit I had an invincible guardian
I completely forgot you can shoot levers. I failed so many times trying to get him to stay in the middle hit him with it like 3 times and still didn't kill him cause I couldn't always get him in the center. This was way easier than whatever pepega stuff I was doing
Your video was so helpful. Your method of dispatching this boss worked very well and was easily accomplished. I beat the boss many times before until there seemed to be an update or a patch and I had difficulties beating the grym again for unknown reasons. After your video, the grym and my headaches are a thing of the past. Thank you.

The easiest fight in the game, you don't even have to go near him, fill the mould and materials, and hop back on the stairs with a whole party, and operate the levers with a bow! You can slowly chip away his health from above, cause he can't do anything to you, or if you want to speed things up, send a summons to the middle for bait
How? None of my range attacks injure that guy at all!
@@fehyndana7725 You must shoot lava valve every now and then too, to make him take a walk through lava, to soften his skin. That's what summons are for, for bait. Place one in the middle, to lure him beneath the hammer, and then shoot forge lever! Two or three hits with the hammer should do it!
Found out how to beat him while I was fighting him. Same strategy with the crucible piston and it was such a cool fun little mechanic. Nice video too!
Third playthrough I am going without this strategy, let's see how it goes.
I used hide on astarion behind the wheel to turn lava on and off, he stayed out of the combat turns allowing me to turn the lava on and off at any moment :) thank you for the vid!

horrible boss design. Its very bugged for me. Even when boss is in lava after getting crushed he is ALWAYS immune.

The problem with him falling where he does in this video is sometimes that can block being able to use the forge a second time.
this is such a fun and comedic way to defeat a boss, I watched this and thought 'this is so smart, why didn't I think of doing that?' Which is what I love about this game so much. One game but countless variations of getting through the game.
Next time I'll try just go heads on, we'll see how it goes. Planning to play Bard though :)
I don't know why the hammer never came to mind, I ended up giving Karlach a 2-handed hammer and a Hill Giant's Strength elixir, and she went to town
What level are you in this jesus, and how to you get so high? I am almost lvl 6 just getting to the fight and feel like i have done pretty much everything there is to do in act 1
Im level 5, and feel the exaxt samw, this was my last resort before level 6 lmao

I beat him, I found that I am way underlevel while encounter this boss, my highest HP was 42. It's has a very fun mechanics and stage design. the ground slam is so evil. Thanks for the tips!

Grym is level 5, it's intended to be tackled around there
Edit: He's level 8 in the vid but I think you can fight him earlier, or it scales with different difficulties. Fighting him at lower levels sounds like it would be brutal.
@Hawk7886 idk, in this video I think the difficulty is on the easiest setting possible, my grym is lvl 7 with 300 hp, his grym is lvl 8 with 210 hp, that's my only problem, all my guys are lvl 6 but my highest hp besides my barbarian is 45, they just die so fast

I think the Heat Metal spell also works for removing the invulnerability
You can’t get the achievement for defeating him if you use the forge hammer
Got him down to 10hp & died. I only came to make the Mourning Frost staff
the boss was still alive after i landed two direct hits with the hammer….. cannot win this 😂

It took me 4 tries to do it, only because he wasn't doing what I wanted. But after trying again and again, I finally killed his ass lol
My game is bugged the lever for the lava is not working
I spent over an hour on this guy. He couldn't do anything because i kept knocking him prone with my barbarian throwing lightning arrow things. With bless and the singing sword my barb had a 90% attack. But he quit talking damage at 39. Every now and then he would take a few points from a thrown axe or dagger.
But after soany rounds and i couldn't knock him prone, he wiped me out. Well him and the flying things when they exploded on me.
I got him to 21 hp. I never turned the lava back on. But there was fire on the ground from those flying things exploding. I wonder if thatade him vulnerable enough. Because he took 4 damage each time. May be from my strength modifier. Idk. Was just 0s and occasionally a 4.
2nd try I beat him the same way but before he could move. Kept him prone the whole time
There is an achievement for beating him without using the forge for anyone interested
I just used barb throw to keep him prone with lightning arrows. Use bless and the singing sword to increase your attack and just keep him laying down in the lava and hit him with whatever works with your other party members. But barbarian having 3 throws per round is crazy and he can't stand up. Spirit weapon maul on him with a rogue in fog cloud getting sneak attack at range then hide again with threat on him.
yeah in honour mode he has 460 hp, temp hp to boot, nast6y kickback legendary ability AND hits for like 80 dmg :D oh and he summons 6 magma mephits that are disarming your party and messing up the intitiative order.. so.. yeah :D
What makes it hard is that the lava texture
my charectars all have between 39-55 hp and every other guide im watching they are always high level, my guys were are like level 5
no matter what I tried he was still immune to whatever attack I did. Stuck here for another hour or so…

Can anyone explain why the forge doesn’t drop down when I hit the forge hammer??
How did you get to Level 7? I did everything in Act 1 except the boss you are showing so far and am at Level 6 and still far away from Level 7.

First of all you have like double the hp I have. FAR more easy. Second it depends how far he walks. Sometimes further sometimes not. Sometimes he stands directly in front of the hammer. Then what....no dmg and then next round he walks away again. Gotta find the right balance the right distance to lure him on that hammer....its a horribly dogshit bossfight I hate it so much. Its sooo dumb. Trying to find the right distance all the fucking time. Cant dmg him otherwise ofc (unless you are lvl 10000) and he mostly one hits ofc.
Edit: Ah yes. The newest patch has this: "Grym suddenly got eerily smart and was avoiding the Crucible in the Adamantine Forge. With a nervous laugh, we dumbed him back down a little."

misty steps and reactivate the lava. pretty easy at level 5.
In my playthrogh I cant use the lever. It says that its stuck no matter if there is lava or not.
Some mentioned it's might be bugged. If you try again and it still is, the chain of order which you did it might caused it to bugged out. You are not the first to mention this. Either load a save I guess and hopefully this will be fixed in the upcoming update if that's indeed the case.
I'm the worst tactician ever, i beat him by using 2 groups (all characters ungrouped on either side of the arena) ,and aggro switch sides the quake messed me up. Totally ran out of hp pots got it down to 56 hp with ranged attacks that did 0-5 damage and then jumped on him to mele stomp to burst. My beefiest Char had 50 HP . What a fight! (this video kinda pissed me off ,. ghge:)
PS5 v4.1.1 here and the hammer doesn’t even dent him even if he’s superheated, did they patched this or what ?
Me: Gets him on the center & smashed him 3 times for 0hp because he didmt step completely in lava
Also me: Gets him superheated/vulnerable, chugs potion of speed & misses smite 4 times in a row
I quit the game during this boss fight. Never coming back to play this.
This is the worst fight in the game. I’m on my second playthrough and I’m about to skip this fight. You should just skip it and go to Moonrise Towers. The rest of the game is incredible
I'm on Tactician, at level 5, Grym is Level 8 with 450 HP, 1 smack with the anvil only takes of 130-ish . i still can't get him to superheat and smack him 2 more times :(
It should scale, as you can continue hammering him and he won't move I believe. Just bringing even a tanky character and revive if needed just so it stays in place. Haven't tried at higher level, but might work.
im also level 5 in normal Grym is level 10 with 300 hp. Most my attacks are missing and if it is not overheated anvil does zero damage + it shows two turns prone then gets up in a single turn, larian always has to push into moronic territory in some fights..

Can't defeat him no matter what.
What a trash encounter. The lava doesn't drain away and the giant won't take damage from the second hit no matter what, he just gets up invincible. Can't believe they got so much praise for such a janky game.
Edit: they bumped him to level 10 too, just to make it more trash.

Why it doesnt take any damage even when I'm hammering it?
Turn on the lava using the lever, without it he is immune to damage.

Wait for the next turn, it should me not immune before he stands up so you'll be able to hit him again - it happened to me as well@@Serendipity_GamingX
He never gets close enough to get hit by the piston :(( I'm standing in the same position too
Maybe they buffed his "IQ" in latest patch.. I tried it several times before the latest patch as I moved to Starfield, and it worked well.
Gryms red ring just has to overlap the tiniest amount to count...and u can crush him.

Naw man, even then this fight just... The AI is so fucky due to the threat detection. If you can't grab his attention you just get fucked.
Do you have a fighter in your team, a fighter can deal massive damage and finish it relatively fast. Make sure that the lava i active of course.
@@SpookyFairy accuracy > damage in this fight. Also, I'm on tactician. If you miss, repositioning without getting thoroughly wacked, especially after today's patch, is a pain.
I'll play tactician on my 3rd playthrough. I'm sure I'll suffer quite a bit.@@Seachained_Ghost

Because it will be a long video as I took my time to check different options. The fight is very simple, bait him to middle, hit the lever, turn lava, hit him again, fight over.
Wait??? How do ur characters have so much hp and Grym has so little?
That's what I was wondering?? Mine has 300 health and immunity to every damage. Playing on balanced difficulty
@@ambi.z4233 He is weak to bludgeoning damage I believe but that is only when he is overheated. That said you can almost 2 shot him with the anvil and press.
