I'm not even a fan of John Mayer, I like his style and playing well enough, but he is not among my top ranked players. Now saying that, I am impressed with the Paul Reed Smith (PRS) guitars and the John Mayer signature pieces sound ideal to what I want to achieve with my style of Blues. I'm a player and not a collector so cosmetic flaws are of no concern. So I will wait for a lesser cost used one.

It's a John Mayer decision and watching this video and Trogly's reactions and thoughts, kind of reinforces my suspicions that John is a bit of a prat (not knocking his playing). Gig bag being a big issue but his logic is that it's easier to carry around so people can just take it and play it? Which is kind of nonsense really, especially given the cheaper price of a gig bag over a hardshell, if people want the gig bag they will get one and it will be easier on the customer (making them more likely to buy the Sky, could even bundle a gig bag bonus for extra if they want).
The guitar itself is pretty excellent though, being a PRS, and that price, I would expect nothing less

Not only does it damage the finish but the button itself will be more firm if the felt is there as it stops the spinning you get when they aren't tightened. So to not use a felt you either risk damaging the finish, or if you don't tighten it enough your finish will be ok but then the button will spin. So yes, they are needed.

That’s how they’ve always been labeled in Fender catalogues and owner’s manuals. I’d be surprised if PRS is treating their high-end Strat copy any differently in this regard. I have the Nebula Silver Sky and while I was waiting for it to be delivered, I got a maple neck Silver Sky and had a custom flip-flop paint job applied by Evolution Guitar Finishing in Carlsbad, CA because I like maple boards too. Ordered my Lunar Ice shortly after the PRS event and can't wait to check it out in person! As much as I LOVE these guitars, I really wish they had mother of pearl bird inlays similar to certain Private Stock models. The current inlays are still very Strat-esque, which some might like, but I'd definitely prefer MOP inlays. I love PRS Silver Sky guitars - and my PRS Special 22 - but feels like a missed opportunity. I doubt it would hurt PRS's margins all that much. Less expensive than a hard case and I would personally value more. Add a hard case and PRS's margin decrease would likely mean they'd raise prices even further, which would mean even more people would be upset!

I bought one of the first 500 Silver Skys back in early 2018. The first 500 models sold came with a hardshell case and I, without a doubt, would prefer the gigbag, even though the hardshell looks cool with the John Mayer Signature metal plate. It's insanely heavy, so it's impossible to carry around, even though the guitar itself is lightweight. Only reason I don't sell this silver sky for one with a gigbag, is my sentimental value of the guitar. Also, that really isn't a low quality gigbag, it's the best in its class, and they've obviously only made it better as you can see in the video. Also also, This isn't prs' choice, but Mayers, his Fender signatures also came with a gigbag.
