- In this video i bought an eBay short shifter for my BMW E36 Drift Build. Was not that hard of a job to do and i am pretty happy with the outcome.
This was a cheap easy modification that only cost $30 off eBay.
Thanks for watching.

The best simple instructions I've found on YT. Thank you
No problem man thanks for watching.
Very clear and direct to the point.
great instructions, followed them perfectly even though the job itself is actually pretty tricky. feels so much better to drive, thanks bro
I have installed one on my BMW e46 and I have to say, it is the most amazing experience I have ever had, it really is worth it, and I urge everyone to get one!!
The only trouble I had was installing it at home , because the ring that you must clip on from the bottom was extremely hard to do alone and if you dont have the proper tools it will be extremely difficult to clip it on , so I had to take it to a garage to place the bottom ring/clip on it,
so it doesnt wiggle and its sturdy then? is it actually good
This is actual such a good video for someone to simply see how to do it. Big fan of this video!
Thank you for watching and thank you for feedback on the video.
I was trying to take this out like 1 hour 😆 then I watched this video, and I did in 1 minute! !! 😁 thank u men...
The first video that show everything step by step thank you
The best simple instructions I've found on YT. Thank you (2)
Umberto Gobbi thanks for watching man. And no problem try my best.
Great video! Thank you for posting!
Instead of the music playing during the test drive, I would have loved to hear your car on start up. Great guide.
Thank u sir for making a good and simple video how to remove it you earned yourself a extra subscriber 👌🏻
Well thank you. I will be back very soon on here. 🤘🏻
Dope vid. Thanks for the help 🤙
PureCaptures no problem thanks for watching.
Best how toI've seen
Hey, did you have to remove anything else, like exhaust? Or there is enough space to remove the clip and the shifter?
Are you using a ZF trans? Idk why but I got the wrong shift lever. Idk if it was a getrag or one for a 4 banger or coulda been a e30 lever. Just wanna make sure it works with the ZF
That rear carrier bushing needs attention
What brand and we’re did you get your seats
Hey great job on that camera angle under the car! I've tried to see a few vids on doing this but none of them would or could show that area. Thanks! One thing I don't really know and it seems to be a bit different for some is that some seem to not need the "C" clip on the bottom. Might be the E46 but I'm not sure. I'll have to do a bit more digging.
Greg Wayne thank you and I'm pretty sure your right e46 has a different clip or doesn't use one at all I think.
I wonder Jake how is the shifter now that you've had it in almost a year? Presuming you still have the same car lol. I bought one because most of the reports on then said it was an improvement and at that price you can't lose. I just got it in the post but my car is getting the sub frame reinforcement plates put in (E46 M3 Thanks BMW LOL) which takes a few days. Can't wait to get it back.
Greg Wayne it's amazing man and hah I have a video on subframe plates and bushings as well I still have the car having some fuel issues right now just popped in a new mishimoto rad. So videos on that very soon as well. But I love the shifter have had zero issues.
Haha. I thought I'd watched ever subframe video on youtube but I keep forgetting that the E36 had problems too. I'm watching some more of your vids now. I'm getting the poly bushing put in too and I'm hoping it will really tighten up my rear for the drit-max factor LOL. Wow you put some sweet bushing in your trailing arms man. Those must have run a few bucks. But you drift that baby all the time. I'll be checking out the rest of your vids! Thanks for the great content Jake. Subbed!
Greg Wayne thinks man appreciate it and there will be plenty more videos soon
I fitted mine, throw is nice but it's sloppy af.. Its in gear and I can stir it like porridge...
M50B20?
eBay link doesn't work anymore... I know this video is 6 years old but do you remember what brand your shifter is?
hey man! awesome video, the best i could find about installing short shifter. I've got 1 question though, would this fit on my e46 320d '04 facelift?
Nikola Jurenić I'm pretty sure this one is specific for the e36 but I'm certain they make some for the e46 on eBay as well.
i need the e46 one :)
When i'm looking at e46 shifters they all say they fit on e46 but only from 1999 to 2002 year models (the pre facelift ones). Googled for an hour and couldn't find any useful info so i thought you might know :) I would not like to buy one just to throw it in a trash.
Nikola Jurenić I'l see what I can find this weekend
How did you do that with the snap ring i tried so hard but i just cant get it on there. .
I used snap ring pliers to spread them apart and make sure your shifter is fully pressed down .
U dont need to remove center console it doesnt get in the way
my short shifter for my e46 wouldnt teach outside the bottom of the linkage. so i never got to put the ring on..
Yeah I'm not 100% sure for the e46 as mine I'd an e36 sedan.
Did that bottom snap ring come with the shortshifter? Or did you buy it from somewhere? And what size is the snapring?
Niklasfrilander came with the short shifter thanks for watching
Good video I’m wondering if it’s shifting smoothly or is it tough going into gear especially the 1-2
Still shift smoothly maybe check your clip underneath?
I have installed one on my BMW e46 and I have to say, it is the most amazing experience I have ever had, it really is worth it, and I urge everyone to get one!!

After a long time i was looking for something simple, and amazing, such a simple instructions video, buddy i also have a e36, can you tell me the brand of the prod? and, until now, hows your car running? are u still using the same lever??
Daniel West I am still using the same lever car is running much better now I should be doing more videos soon just been busy with work and college classes but I shall be doing a wrap video soon of the BMW and more events and drifting off course 😉
amazing, i think, after the lever, to combine i thin putting a lightweight flywheel, would be good.
im already sing in in ebay to look for the lever, as yours
This decent as fuck, about to try this on my 318ti! Copped a short shifter for $10
E46 BMW DUDE thanks man and yeah I love it
finally an istal vid that actually shows everything, just a question, i want to remove that thing in the centre console with the 3 gauges in my car because they don't work, can i just cut that cable attached to it?
JonesCarSpotter that may work for you if you don't think you will need them you can go ahead and cut it and if you need it later you can always re wire it back.
Jake Sams okay thanks! It’s not like cutting that cable will do anything to stop my car from running normal?
JonesCarSpotter it shouldn't
Jake Sams okay great thanks 😁
Does the snap ring come with the shirt shifter or did u buy that separately
Eduardo Rosas my snap ring came with it.
I've found with these that they can be hit or miss. the throw is way too short that I miss gears and it might be slightly conflicting with my selector rod as i occasionally grind into gears if i go too quickly. also, I cant trll the difference between neutral and my lower gears, it's pretty bad. theres so much slop in them that to me, I prefer the feel of the genuine one. but whatever, I got my $20 worth because at least I can still drive it
MCatwar yeah I noticed some ppl have issues for me I have had it a long time not and have noticed no issues as of now but not too bad of price for a decent short throw
Jake Sams yeah I'm just gonna get a genuine BMW shifter off fcp euro in a bit, comes with new bushings, selector rod, etc
I have almost contemplated the condor speed shot shifter looks amazing
Jake Sams hmm I'll check it out
which is your e36 model year?? i have a 91' one and apparently this only fit in models from 92. do you know anything about it?? does it fit in my 91'?? thanks in advance
Mine is a 92 e36 325i I don't believe it fits a 91 usually the description when buying the part says what year make and model it fits.
"spread em, push down and shift it clockwise" weird position
Dirty dirty girl
Does the shiftknob fit tight? I have seen a video where it was very loose
I got one. No it doesn't. You have to squeeze the gap on the top with a clamp or whatever you got to make the gap smaller and then the shift knob will be held in place.
Was your new shifter moved slightly to the right, off-centered compared to the stock one?
No it was back to stock location no issues.
Hey man is it good and is it worth to remove your stock shifter and install that one cuz i am thinking about it but dont know if its good enough
Yes it is I absolutely love it and still use it.
my snap ring clip keeps comming off at the bottom how hard do I have to push the shifter in or how deep does it go?
Anthony Ayad I had to put alot of force down on my shifter for it to come down enough to put the snap ring back on
Jake Sams thanks for the reply I'm gonna get someone to hold it down while I put it on in the mean time I'll try to use alot of greese to pop it through
Anthony Ayad I used a mallet from the top to hit it a few times then it allowed me enough room
Any thoughts after year of using? Still tight and all good?
All good like new no issues still amazing.
I hope this video will help me
It should I added step by step to help everyone out the best I could. 🤘🏻
Did u put the car on ramps only in the front? Back is not raised ?
Yes I used metal ramps which gave me enough room to work under it
I can use these steps for a uuc short shifter??
I believe so
I can put grease on the ball joint right?
It won’t mess up anything?
Couldn't put the snap ring on with my snap ring pliers :/ I guess I need them a bit bigger :/ I recommend everyone to try and put the snap ring on the shifter before anything else, or you'll waste a good amout of time trying to put it there under the vehicle...
MarthyM yeah it took me awhile just trying to get that snap ring on lol
me to mate I dunno what to do now
I got bigger snap ring pliers and it went in ok (still took a bit of effort).
that's annoying fkn ebay
i wasted about 3 hours with that fucking ring, in my e39 530d , it a lil bit different and after 3 hours , just fucking gave up. i have to remove all the suport and maybe doin it outside then mont it all togheter.
Any updates on how it’s holding up bud ?
Still holding up strong 🤘🏻
How to remove the clip? Do u slide it out or open it wide?
I pulled mine down with pliers.
Snap ring pliers worked perfectly for me. The clip has 2 little holes on it.
I’ve done everything the same way but I can’t manage to get the car into 2nd and the 4th gear! Everything else is smooth any help will be appreciated
Did you double check the bushing and or the collar of the short shifter is firmly
Pushed down? I had similar issue when I first installed it.
I’ve sent you a dm on your Instagram page
are those bride seats?
No nrg seats I have a video on them
What size are the threads on the top of the shifter?
Curly Fry M14 x 1.25
Jake Sams thanks
Nice vid! Really good review! Could you please give me a link or the name of the seller on ebay? I couldnt find one with the thread on top which yours has.
Jan Rambousek I sure can I'll post the link in the video description now.
Thank you for watching and link for the shifter is in the description.
Mine didn’t come with a pin in the bottom or had a pin in the bottom...should I be worried?
Do you mean the clip for the bottom? yours should have a pin that slides through since the pin is from the shifter linkage system off the vehicle. If it didn't come with a clip I would message the seller and see if they can send you one.
Jake Sams I’m talking about the snap ring, when I removed my stock shifter, i didn’t have to remove any snap ring, only thing I had to remove was the clip that was attach to the bottom of the shifter that goes through the hole. But then when I was sitting in the driver seat, If I use force to pull the shifter up, it will pop out soo maybe I should go buy a snap right to put it on so it doesn’t pull out
@@stevenvang2650 yes you need that snap ring to hold the shifter down.
Jake Sams do you know what the size of the snap ring is?
Nvm bro. For some reason there isn’t even a spot for the snap ring..weird
Does yours lean to the right or sit to the right? My neutral is right below where my 5th used to be lol
No mine sits just like stock except shorter. Do you have the mono ball clip in correct location.
Jake Sams fast reply :o, is that the bottom snap ring? Or the clip that goes on the end? Or something else?
@@basedpony866 it's the bottom clip but make sure that mount is correctly tighten or isn't broken it's a metal mount where you push the short shifter in. Sometimes those crack which causes bad seating.
Jake Sams okay thank you, ill take a look at it asap
@@basedpony866 let me know what you find I'l do what I can to help 👍
Miine vibrates so much when in 1st and neutal is it justt me?
Shouldn't vibrate did you forget the white bushing or something? Seems like something might be loose.
@@JakeSams i put the snap ring
@@JakeSams but ifii pull it up it comes up a bit t isnt tight
@@boxlight2888 that's weird something seems to be missing or not fully seated.
How is it holding so far?
No issues so far.
What do you think about the shifter after one month of usage?
Ben·tastic I love the shifter has shifted great for me since day one and I recently made a shift knob for it.
How do you like it so far?
I still love it. I don't get to drive it as much as I want from being so busy hoping to release some more videos before the end of the year and get back to posting regularly.
Sweet thanks for the info 👍
Nice video but I cant lie. You come off the clutch hella slow
Driftcar my ass!!!! Lmao
Thanks for editing out how hard this job actually is started it late evening and now I won’t have my car in the morning because the factory heat shielding actually covers the entirety of the area you need to get to under the car making it impossible to reach anything shown in video unless you’re built like spaghetti
Must be a different year I had zero factory heat shielding under my boot area I squeezed around everything. Also always plan ahead before you do stuff to your own vehicle if you don't have another.
