OMA - Oswald Mill Audio EURO 450 000 for a turntable

  • OMA founder Jonathan Weiss is furious with Stereophile for calling his new K3 - a record player only for oligarchs, but with a price tag of $450,000 one must have ample finances. The arm, record player amplifier and the huge stand K3 are placed on top. In this video he presents both this and the speakers made for the Guggenheim Museum.

Stunning and very cool that there are still old-school quality people out there. I’d buy one if funds allowed, absolutely. Most everything today is made like crap and poor QC in comparison to the costs. Great to see. I was thinking about the SP10 and OMA plinth at some point.

This video is a pleasant surprise.
Firstly because despite having an introduction in Norwegian (I think) even though it is subtitled, which is a great consideration for those who watch, it continues all the way to the end in English.
Secondly because I, like many others, have a lot of interest and curiosity about Oswald Mills components. If we were to compare audio systems to cars, while other brands are fighting to sell electric vehicles with no life or soul, ΩΜΑ is producing new vintage gems like retro styled Bugattis, Maseratis and Aston Martins from the golden age of motoring! In other words, cars for adults with a refined taste.
Finally, because I really like seeing Jonathan Weiss talking about his own products because he has this self-satisfied way that may at first just sound like arrogance but to me it's due to a lack of patience after a huge effort in search of excellence in a world dominated by mediocrity.
And I give him complete reason!
    Greetings from Brazil.

I think it's easier for the human ear to hear timing differences in higher frequencies not low. I think the OMA system goes for a big earthy resonant bass with detailed mids and highs.

$450.000 for a record player? Simple and plain crazy, and not in a good way. This is engineered to be expensive. And yes, this is only for oligarchs. People who are buying stuff like this, they are the ones not listening, they are flashing their money.

Seriously, if I had the cash OMA equipment would be in my living room right now. I totally understand him. So many “audiophiles” listen to their equipment rather than the music. They spend a half million on all the stuff you see at these high fi shows and tell you how airy and open the speakers and turntable and amplifier are, when they have no clue what the musicians intent was. Weiss want you to hear that record reproduced how the artist and producers heard it in the studio. Or maybe Led Zeppelin where half their greatest stuff was recorded on old mansions with superb natural echo, or maybe Pet Sounds where Brian Wilson literally went crazy to get the sound on you don’t hear unless you have the right equipment.
That’s OMA. That’s real audio. And the asthetics follow the function, because the sound is first. The equipment looks like that because it has to for that sound.

Little by little we are getting closer to the end of high end. which is what we could hear more, it has taken the prices…. I wanted to say parameters at the levels of the absurd, it is art for art, nobody is able to listen to the frequencies that they supposedly offer. Only the bats in the nearby caves will be disturbed. The rest will be a lie that some specialists sell to nerds. But it does sound very professional and convincing. If you have not finished quantum physics you will appear there to clean the floors. The king is naked but no one protests.

But this has been the case for decades. Allowing for inflation there has always been an ultra high end ultra high priced. The Sondek was ultra expensive when first launched compared to other turntables, then came Krell, Wilson and such and if anything with the increase in ultra wealth then the market for this stuff is even more secure than the days when money was more democratically spread.
Just look at other luxury goods markets, hyper cars that cost multiples of millions have long waiting lists, try to buy an ultra complicated Patek, you will be in a feeding frenzy of people for whom spending half a million on a watch is barely a second thought.
The ultra high end has never had a stronger or larger base! Heck, we live in an age where twenty year olds turn billionaires in less than two years thanks to things like the internet and crypto!
