Eating at Torrisi NYC. Amazing Italian Food from the Restaurant Group that Opened Carbone

- I eat at and review Torrisi Bar & Restaurant in the Nolita neighborhood of New York City. The establishment is currently one of the most popular in the city and comes from the Major Food Group, which is the same restaurant group that started Carbone. I compare the two restaurants and judge which is the better of the two. Torrisi is an Italian restaurant from chef Rich Torrisi but has a number of NYC influences across the menu.

About Me: I live in NYC and I’m about food, travel and work.
I’m Greek and I would never pay that much for a Gyro sandwich. Let alone a minuscule version of one. I also have never seen it that small in all of Greece either.
But I appreciate your reviews. If you fly down to Greece, Cyprus (Or any other Greek island). I can recommend some great affordable places for you.
Yeah, that was an insane price even for NYC. I really should've asked how much it was before I got it. I've been to Greece before and really enjoyed it! I'll let you know if I get over there again.
Informative. Elegant. Beautiful Editing. Good job man, loving your style and wishing you success!
Thank you so much!
Your reviews are amazing I look forward to your videos thank you
Thank you always for watching! I really appreciate it!
Another impressive review James, you really are quite good at this.
Thanks for taking us along.
Thank you so much, and thanks for watching!
Excellent coverage James. Keep on keepin on!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
The skimpy expensive sandwich would have ruined it for me. It didn't even look very appetizing if you want my opinion.
Thankfully, it tasted better than it looked, but if I knew how small it was I wouldn't have ordered it.
A very fancy review, the narration and music had me immersed in the menu.
Thank you! I tried my best to fit the vibe of the restaurant with my narration and editing.
just found your channel the other day....really impressed
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Yay another upload! I don't know if you have one yet, but I'm going to NY next year for the first time as a college graduation gift. Could you make a video of all the restaurants one should go to ranging from different types (best affordable ones, upscale, trendy, bunch, classics, etc type restaurants)? I also would love a video on a waterfront/boat restaurant in NY!
Thank you! That's an awesome gift and I hope you enjoy NYC! That would be a difficult video to make since I feel that I'm not qualified to make it. I would have to eat at so many more NYC restaurants just to get a decent grasp on what to recommend. It's overwhelming the amount of food options in the city. As far as waterfront restaurants, The River Cafe is definitely the best. It's got a great Lower Manhattan skyline view and the food even earned the establishment a Michelin Star.
James, as always your reviews and delivery style are dead on. I used to live in the West Village and would frequent many of the areas that you have gone to (Nolita, SoHo, East Village, West Village, etc.). One that was always a standout and excellent value was Piccolo Angolo on Hudson and Jane in the West Village. The owner, Renato, was a real character and added a great deal of entertainment during each dining experience. He has passed away but believe his son Peter and daughter Maria now run this establishment. Very small (seats around 40), but food was always excellent. Dont know if they make it anymore, but the lobster and crab cannelloni (I think I got that right) were excellent. Keep up the great work James.
Thank you! I haven't been to those restaurants yet, but I'll add them to my list. Thank you for the recommendations!
Watching from Boise in the middle of a snowstorm. Love your channel!
Thank you so much!
Interesting review. The food looked great but the sandwich was for sure a little small, even for a fancy place.
Love your work, recently discovered your channel. Love from England, UK🇬🇧👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much! I agree, the sandwich was too small, but at least it was pretty good.
James, I'm glad you check out these places so I don't feel compelled to. I might try a place like this perhaps once every 2 or 3 years. I guess Nolita is the new UES. That dessert looked very good and very creative.
Thank you! Yeah, Nolita has really been developing a great restaurant scene.
Great review. Please review the Pit in Edgewater NJ. The brisket & ribs are fabulous. So are there burgers & hot dogs.
Thank you! And thanks for the recommendation! If I'm in the area, I'll give it a try.
The CZcams gods randomly recommended you and I’m glad they did. You have a great style and something I dreamed of doing myself . Keep it up
Man good stuff
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
I love exploring new places for lunch service, and having Tuesdays off, offers me the opportunity to do it without the "brunch crowd". I'd definitely give it a shot!
Yeah, it's a great restaurant for sure, from the food to the service, but just a bit pricey.
I'm glad you were able to get a seat, even if it was at the bar. Take that, George Clooney!
Haha!
Good job…looked like some good food just a little pricey like you said but all in all good review on it..keep it up man
Thank you very much!!
Cucumbers New Yorkese blew me away yesterday. Also gotta get the off menu bao bun they are offering, go back for dinner!
Nice! Yeah, I'm definitely planning a return for dinner.
Great video. Well done.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
@@Jamesnu you’re welcome. I subscribed.
@@Xone7 I really appreciate it!
There is no shortage of red sauce Italian restaurants in NYC and its suburbs. I would say Marios in the Bronx is probably the best followed by Dominicks also in the Bronx on Arthur Avenue.
Thanks for sharing those restaurants! They sound like great establishments.
Nice! May i ask how much is the usual rate for tips on these high end restaurants? Thanks thanks
No problem. Usually at least 20 percent in the US.
@@Jamesnu thank you! Cant wait to visit NY soon after watching your videos!
@@acerosmp4385 Nice! I hope that you enjoy NY!
Portion looks good for an appetizer
Yeah, in that case it was a fair size.
It seems reasonable priced for a nice restaurant in Manhattan!
Yeah, the pastas and desserts were in line with other restaurants of similar quality, but the sandwich was a little too expensive. Next time, I'll just get another pasta.
Marios is notable is because Mark Iacono is a fan of their pizza which is an off menu item.
Nice! Mark definitely knows his pizza.
Hey James!!
I was able to book reservations at 1:45pm for lunch at Torrisi, then realized their hours are closed from 2pm to 5pm. Is this going to be a time issue for my party of 3? I can't imagine being rushed out at a restaurant like this, but you never know.. This will be my 1st time in NY and am traveling here for my birthday. It is a pain to get a hold of them so I thought I can directly ask you through here.. Any advice would be much appreciated!!
Your videos are amazing btw! Keep up the great work!!
-Alan
Thank you! You should be fine. A lot of restaurants have hours like that. It's just at 2 they won't be taking in any more customers, but they'll continue to serve food for the guests already inside the restaurant. I hope you have a great time in New York and Happy Birthday!
Thank you!!!@@Jamesnu
I don't know, I would have a really hard time paying $29 for tortellini...no matter how good it is. Unless I was writing off all the expenses as part of a businesses, I'd die inside spending this kind of money for such small portions. This is why I watch videos of restaurant reviewers so I don't have to. :-)
Haha! Yeah, it's costly for pasta.
Carbone isn't necessarily the go-to place in this city. Have you tried Arthur and Sons? I think it's Michelin starred. Not sure...
I haven't been to that one yet, but I'll have to check it out sometime. I think a lot of people assume that since Carbone is so famous, that it must be the best, when that's not necessarily the case. It's still a great restaurant though!
How easy was it to get a seat at the bar? Did you have to wait?
It was pretty easy. I just walked right in, but I know with dinner, there's usually a line outside before the restaurant opens for the bar.
👞 Sometimes a restaurant gets so popular that I begin to hate it. Hahajaja! I wouldn’t be happy at a loud and expensive restaurant. And by the way, I don’t believe that Clooney story for a second. No way is any restaurant rejecting an A- list star, unless the A-list Star was willing to work in cahoots with them. By seemingly “rejecting” an a-list star, a restaurant can give the impression that it’s THAT exclusive. Your average joe will then take it as a major accomplishment when he scores a table.. . thinking that he “beat out” A-ist star, George Clooney. I’m not saying that’s what happened here, but it could have.
Funny enough, the bar area of this restaurant is actually quieter than it's dining room. Yeah, there's no confirmation that the story is true, but I can't imagine why George Clooney would want to give the impression that he was rejected from the restaurant. If he was working with them, he certainly doesn't need the money and it's not exactly a plus for his image. But no doubt about it, it certainly bolster's the restaurant's image and creates a sense of exclusivity.
Meat looked a little dry. Enjoyed the video
Thank you! It at least tasted better than it looked.
Oh man what a gank move $29 gyro lol.
Yeah, that's about 3 times the price of a typical gyro in Astoria and not to mention, it's about twice as small.
So Torrisi or Don Angie for first time NYC visitor??
That's a tough one! Both restaurants are amazing! I don't think I can choose. If you can get a reservation for either, you won't be disappointed.
Okay thanks!!!
I'll have to check this place out. You definitely nailed just the right amount of scruff on your face
Haha! Thanks! It's definitely a restaurant to check out!
Wow, great looking food and I believe it tasted really good… But it’s really pricey coming from a European citizen…
Yeah, it's pretty pricey for everywhere. NYC is a great city, but the worst part is how expensive it is.
Well, it wouldn't be as expensive back when a Euro cost $1.35. Rates fluctuate. Perhaps some day they will reverse again. Meanwhile, food prices in Europe seem pretty reasonable to Americans.
@@richardgelber2740 Indeed. Everything is relative to the situation.
I guess you are paying more for ambiance rather than portion size.
Haha! That may be true!
A 20min wait in NYC??? That’s equal to 4 hrs.. gfoh
What is the name of the restaurant? Did he say “Chorizo”? Or did he say “Theresa”? Or was it “Torisee”? Or perhaps “Choreesee”? Say what??? Also I didn’t know a restaurant was part of a food group…like fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy…😂😂😂
You need to find a friend to share your experiences
That would be nice, but I have no problem dining alone.
Are there any conservative babes in NYC?
🤔
wow.
The food and restaurant were pretty epic!
Italian restaurant with no authentic bread? Hard Pass...... But love your reviews!
Thank you! Yeah, bread would've been nice.
yeah that sandwich is a ripoff at that price lol, also why is an Italian restaurant doing a gyro sandwich?
Yeah, it was a bit of a strange offering, but it was at least decent despite being overpriced.
$100 for a lunch? I know several places where I could get better and more Italian food for $30.
It's definitely costly, but it was great food.
Hanzel, hes just so hot right now
Great movie!
your the man@@Jamesnu
@@stevemiller2296 Haha! Thank you!
I will never understand New Yorkers' justification of getting gouged on food prices.
No doubt about it, NYC is unfortunately very expensive.
Why must it be justified? Nobody is forced to go there. There only have to be a few thousand people (and there are more) who can afford the prices for places like this to do a good business and stay open... as long as (as James attests to) the food is good enough.
This is the first meal where I just wonder - if I went and spent 100 bucks at lunch, I would expect one heck of a lot more bang for my buck. The food just looked bland and uninspired from beginning to end.
The food was definitely good. This restaurant even earned a Michelin star this year. The sandwich wasn't the most exciting, but the pasta was excellent and the dessert was very interesting.
I wouldn't go to NYC for any thing.
Glasses buddy, lose them please
That honestly was a rip-off. Over $100 for lunch of a tiny gyro and tortellini pomodoro? Come on! That made me sad for you. You cannot have been satisfied by that lunch! Those MFG d-bags are laughing at their customers. I don’t know how they justify the prices they charge for ordinary Italian-American food.
The gyro was definitely over-priced. If I knew how small it was and the cost, I would've gotten something else.
since when are gyros and harissa italian ..ughh
We live in a world where 20 mins is too long to wait for food 🤦🏼♂️. Jesus.
I never mind waiting for good food, but there are certain expectations with a restaurant like this and 20 minutes is a bit too long.
Please stop saying "albeit". Did you just learn the word?
It would be worse if you had to eat there with this guy. He eats like a toddler. Gross
Don’t ever mention in any of your dining out comments (not a review) how expensive it is makes you sound like a cheapskate. Expansive compared to what?
I really don't care what people think. I'll always express my opinion. It's up to everyone else to interpret it how they want.
