      Yes this is the trophy winner of the story, I’ve housed mated emperors with about a third of that load in a full Reef system for years, but could never keep the Moorish idol for more than a month or two. But I always tried shooting for Ultra nutrients, that was the eye-opener for me is the fact that he’s pulling this off with stupid phosphates and nitrates! It kind of changed my view reality is algae is going to grow better in a high nutrient tank, and especially the tangs who are crazy grazers that may be the trick. Thank you so much for posting this.

    This is REALLY amazing because I have seen this tank before but this time we heard from Thomas and there is so much wisdom in what he is saying. Incredible. A multibar is definitely on my list - I thought they were from deeper water and generally don't nip at coral - anyhow that's another part of QT that is often overlooked - so awesome to here him say that if you feed a lot and have them on prepared food they won't nip.

      A most impressive collection of fish and husbandry. To keep such a quantity and variety of healthy and, disease-free fish... Such an astounding grouping of specimens in one finely balanced reef such as this is amazing to be able to witness. A great example of saltwater and reef keeping that differs from what is commonly thought possible. Proof that if done in a controlled and thought-out manner. Those previous seemingly unbeatable challenges become a small obstacle in a larger successful operation.

    Just wanted to clarify the QT period for Coral .
    I leave them in a fish-less tank that has been fish-less from the start . I do 90 days cause I like an insurance policy of 18 days. By adding new coral doesn’t start the count cause I don’t have a host ( fish ) in the tank so the cycle is broke. . What I’m Qting for is cyst that may come in on a coral that can last up to 72 days . They need to feed on a host to continue the cycle or die within 24-36 hrs . Hope that helps

    • @zacharylemon3503
      @zacharylemon3503 Před 5 lety

      By having no fish within your Coral Quarantine, you're avoiding theronts. All trophonts die as there is no host. No older corals can be infected. Happy to go into detail if needed 😊

    • @joshuaturner2394
      @joshuaturner2394 Před 5 lety +2

      Jim Porter you can add coral to the QT because of the ich lifecycle. The corals are in QT because there might be ich cysts on them. Once the cysts “hatch” the free swimming ich organisms will die within a couple of days because there are no fish on which to host. 76 days is the longest observed period of the dormant cyst stage so each piece you put in QT just needs to stay for that long.

    • @jimporter
      @jimporter Před 5 lety +1

      Joshua Turner yes but, you add a coral with ice cysts on them which burst and you now have free swimming ice in the water and potentially on othe other coral which you take out of QT and add to our DT thereby transferring the free swimming Ich. Unless you can rid those coral of the free swimmers by dipping or other before introducing to DT then you have contaminated the QT of your 80 day coral.

    • @thomascheer2137

      @zacharylemon3503 Před 5 lety +1

      Happy to help on this one!
      as they're is no host, the ich which transitions from cyst to free swimming dies, it cannot reinfect. The whole point is that if no fish, each coral has a 90 day clock. I can take one coral out an hour later after I put a brand new piece in. Only one tank is required fellas.
      The principal is avoiding putting in theronts. It is recommended shaking/dipping corals to prevent this.

    Great tank but would love to understand the mentality of this weekly coral quarantine that he talked about to do that you would need 13 quarantine tanks just for coral so it's just pure rubbish. I know of people who have qt all their stock for 13-14 weeks and still have white spot but the difference is you are running both uv and ozone along side an excellent feeding regime and to me that is where the benefit is made if you are using uv correctly as most people don't they stick it as part of their return plumbing and fire 6000litres an hour through it when it should have about 600litres an hour through it max. Then people don't understand what ozone does and bang it on to low or whatever.
    Keep going and would love to see your step by step setup for your next upgrade.

    • @95mushroom

      Ich needs fish to continue its lifecycle. Free swimming Ich (Protomont, freshly dropping off a fish) has 18 hours to encrust. If it doesn't, the Ich dies then. After hatching from the encrusting stage, Ich has 24-48 hours to find a fish or die. So because of this, you can add coral to a coral/invert qt, and the timer doesn't reset. You are basically QT'ing for the encrusting stage (tomonts). Personally, I wait 4-7 days if I add fresh coral/inverts to my coral QT before adding to the DT, as extra insurance.
