Greggs is nice and reliable. If you find yourself in a strange town you know what you're getting when you go to Greggs and honestly it's going to be more than half decent, even if not as exciting as you might get from a local baker. I'd go to a local bakery first but I'm not going to turn my nose up at Greggs. The vegetarian sausage rolls are also well worth trying even if you are a carnivore (as I am).

As a formerly puzzled American l’m so glad to finally find out what a Greggs is. I’ve seen them loads of times on Google Street View and for some reason it never crossed my mind that it could be food. I thought it could be a stationery shop, convenience store, book shop…baked goods never crossed my mind. I checked their website and I wouldn’t mind trying a few things there if I ever visit the UK again.

Their pies, pasties and sausage rolls were much better than Greggs and, despite being smaller companies, they had a wider range of cakes, pastries and bread. Greggs was slightly cheaper, but not dramatically, so I guess it was the Greggs brand-name that drew the customers, especially the younger generation, and the smaller shops couldn't compete in the end. I enjoyed a sausage roll or two from a branch of Thurstons in Sheffield in the mid 70s, which I think was owned by Greggs by then, but wasn't branded as Greggs. I don't recall them as particularly memorable. I think the company has grown massively since last I was in the UK, 20 yrs ago. It wasn't the household name back then that it seems to be today. Greggs is not so bad and there’s always one handy no matter where you are in the UK, but this is the commercial side of bakery foods. This brand came from the little shops that every town and city had in the uk, we still have a lot of the wee private bakers in Scotland and I would visit them before Greggs if one’s handy. My goto is defo sausage rolls although they are not as good as they once were, great video thanks

Greggs are obviously doing something right, as their ever-expanding empire shows, but they don't offer anything that wouldn't be tastier from your local bakery. It's really a triumph of marketing profile and careful choice of location.

Having been out of the UK for years, and with the wonderful bakery that once existed in a particular town, I took my daughters to a Greg’s - we all wanted a pasty. We each had a different pasty. We all took one bite and threw the rest in the bin. It was bloody awful.

Just in case you didn’t know. Iceland sell Greggs products. 8 Greggs Sausage rolls for a fiver. They were £3.75 about a year ago but Iceland decided to take advantage of the cost of living crisis and increase the price by over 30% admittedly, they did it in increments but even so. Anyway, if you do fancy a sausage roll every now and then. It saves having to go to Greggs every time. By the way. They take 25 minutes at gas mark 5/6. Do not follow the cooking instructions on the box unless you want them burned.

i have been going to Greggs since i was about 16 or 17 and finishing my education and now i'm in my 30's and i still think they're excellent...i don't care what anyone else thinks. they don't charge too much...they have good variety...they aren't overly indulgent or greasy like some fatty American places i have seen or too boring like some other English places. their sausage rolls and baguettes are good in particular iMO but i also like their basic but satisfying donuts...you don;t need over 100 flavours of donut to be happy...unless you're an american.
IMO Greggs are perfect for the drop in and get what you need for lunch fix...or if u need to grab something quick and leave fix. they have so much versatility on pastries, food and drink...

I have never been into a Greggs until recently because I hate flaky pastry. Although it is very nice for sweet pastries with cream in them, it's just dire for a savoury item. My brother drove me to a hospital appointment 60 miles away and pulled into a Greggs for a snack on the way. I went in just for a pee. I recently learned that the toilets are always to the right in Greggs and that was true. To get there I had to fight my way through a very long queue inside. Tim Martin may be controversial, but he is the typical English eccentric, which is a unique feature of this country. He is not afraid to say what he thinks even if it loses him trade. I too am a Brexiteer, but even I thought his contribution to the debate was over the top, and yes, eccentric.
