We have NEVER had a Chip Butty before! Can Americans who've never had one, make a British authentic Chip Butty? We've tried quite a few british snacks but never the famous CHIP BUTTY! Today we are going to try not one, but 4 DIFFERENT KINDS! And we're going to make them from scratch (except the bread) ourselves! Join us as we stop at our local grocery store here to grab a couple things and then home to prepare & fry our chips and assemble our Chip Butty's! We're so excited! They ALL have salt & Vinegar and 1 will have HP Sauce, another with Ketchup, another with only Salt & Vinegar and lastly Natasha's Mayonnaise version. Let us know if we made these as authentic as possible. We hope you enjoy this and if you do please let us know and possible more cooking & food tasting videos will happen. This was so much FUN! Ladies This was a Masterclass! Please show this to all Americans react to British things! Most of us butter bread for our sandwiches but the whole point in a chip butty is to slather it on. The heat of the chips melts the butter and its just too yummy for coherent thought.😂

An excellent 1st attempt! A couple of points for you to try next time: Blanch the chips in oil at 130 deg Celsius (approx 260 deg Fahrenheit) to blanch them, just cooked through but no colour. Let them cool completely. Then fry at 180 deg Celsius (approx 360 deg Fahrenheit). When golden brown, lift and leave to drain over the pan, chuck them in a bowl and toss salt over to mix. The salt will soak up the excess oil. If your butter is un-spreadable, put it in a microwave on de-frost to soften, for only a few seconds at a time!

Having worked in a Fish & Chip shop as a teenager, I can say that it is better to get the oil nice and hot prior to adding the chips, as the hot oil actually helps ‘seal’ the chips. It does create more spitting from the oil however. Another thing to try next time, is to pre-cook the chips to the point where they’re barley cooked, then allow them to cool down completely before finishing them off in hot oil just before serving. This can help with getting more of a crispy coating on the chips, but it’s a personal preference, as some people actually prefer a slightly softer chip 🙂😋👍🏻

Ladies, you have made the perfect-sized chips for a UK butty! So many Americans use French fries to make a chip butty but fries are not thick-cut for the perfect chip butty. You must also slather the bread with lots of butter so it melts into the soft bread. You've done a grand job and should be proud of yourselves! They look delish! Pickled onion vinegar is also a favourite to use.

Great video, one point is that most reasonable sized UK supermarket chains all just sell alcohol on standard store shelves, Wines, Beers and most spirits. The rules are that you have to be over the legal age to purchase. Funnily enough cigarettes are normally sold at a special kiosk in the store which normally doubles as the stores’ customer service desk. So not sure why you were reticent about entering into the Kroger spirits section. 🤷‍♂️

When there's only 3 major ingredients it's amazing that most reactors think they can change one of them and not compromise the finished sarnie. Those chips were A+ so you were off to a good start there, not using cake for the bread helped a lot too! Temperature and texture are the two major things and those looked good too, crispy but not too cripsy, hot enough to make the vinegar work it's magic.

Oh dear! Firstly, to keep the potatoes from browning you should also put a drip or two of milk to your water and stir. Once all spuds are prepped rinse them and boil them until just tender. Drain then shake to get the outside of each chip roughed up. Let the chips dry a little. ONLY once these steps have been taken should the chip be fried in either hot lard or sunflower oil. This two stage prep can only be beaten by thrice cooked chips - they need to be refrigerated for 24 hrs after boiling but before frying.

I found that if you wait till the oil gets hot and then put them in (a few at a time) they absorb less oil which makes them extra crispy 🙂

Good one ladies. You smashed it.
The best chip butties I’ve ever seen an American ever make.
HP or BBQ is my favourite.
    Love from Yorkshire 😊❤

Here is a recipe for you to try with your tin of Spam. Make batter with flour, milk & eggs. Slice the spam roughly 1/3rd of an inch thick. Slice potatoes about 1/4 inch thick. Put the Spam between two potatoes, then dip in batter and deep fry! The oil should be hot before adding Spam fritters,

Mayo seems to have taken over...especially when we buy sarnies from supermarkets

Chips turned out good, but make sure you blanche them first in cold water, then put them into boiling hot fat. A nice variant is when the chips have been coated in beef dripping. Lovely :)

A difference is that we tend to get the oil hot before adding the chips... gives that sizzle as they go in.

I think that it was more setting it to 200°F which isn't even boiling point for water. It was mentioned in the video, the instructions they were using were British and used Celsus. 200°C is like 400°F

We also eat ‘chip butties’ in Australia. Some people do them plain with just chips and butter, some add tomato sauce, some bbq sauce, some sweet chilli sauce, HP sauce is a personal favourite though. I love that you bought potatoes to make your own chips. Best American butties I’ve seen on the internet so far. Well done. ❤
