With the brand new 2.5 update for MODX and 3.5 for Montage, Yamaha has introduced new functionality called "Smart Morph", an interactive, machine learning performance and composition tool that involves an engaging new graphic display.
This video gives a quick intro to the Smart Morph function, how it works, where to find all the presets, and how to add Smart Morph to any Performance within your sound banks.
There's definitely way more to explore with this new tool, including creating original Smart Morph user presets, but we'll be saving that for future videos.

I appreciate this video! I used korg product because of that "Kaossilator" function they started implementing into the flagship (M3 at the time)Now, its almost like I have an M3 again! I love this board and its taken me from VSTs almost completely (aside from tracking the beat)!
Also, I love the evolution of this instrument and how you explain things. Please keep it coming!

I find your videos among the most useful and informative on CZcams. Upon downloading this upgrade, as an active church musician, my initial assessment was, "Cool, but of what use will it be for my music?" As usual, you've opened some doors and have started me thinking. An A+ you your video, an A+ to Yamaha for improving their products instead of abandoning them after nominal "glitch repair" updates, and now a higher assessment of the morpher (we'll see how useful it is in real life). At your leisure, another video based on bread and butter sound vs science fiction functionality would prove a very useful discourse.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and kind comment, your feedback is incredibly encouraging.
I'll definitely put together more vids on the Smart Morph function and will keep in mind the "bread and butter" as you call it, which is very good point--not all of us are obsessed with the science fiction (like I am lol).
But to address this quickly here, I touched on it very briefly: use Smart Morph to design sounds without having to go in and adjust individual operators/algorithms/parameters/etc. with just a touch of a finger on the multi-color display!
Say you wanted to mellow out your electric piano sound, you now have an infinite palette with which to work with. Find the sound you like on the Smart Morph display and then save it as a User Performance, calling it up whenever you want. Set and forget!
      More to come!
Thanks again for your super kind words.

Would be interesting to play around with the Smart Morph's random trippy sounds for people to hear at clubs or concerts during intermissions between band performances. That would certainly get their attention.

Thanks for your videos man. Really helpful and well put together. Regarding the smart morph though, i know this might sound like an old guy’s comment but I can’t really see a practical use for it in a real live situation, I’m pretty sure my band mates will yell at me if I started playing with that on a rehearsal. But that’s just me! Lol

Haha! Thanks for this comment, it made me chuckle. Live usage of Smart Morph would have to be very specific to the audience, it won't go over very well in all settings and yes your band mates may kick you out of the band!

Thanks very much for this! I especially appreciated your explanation of using attributes to find the SmartMorph performances, as I was having trouble locating them before.
You should try the new "Snow Flurries" performance. This uses a combination of SmartMorph and Motion Control to produce a really thick, gorgeous, moving pad, which would literally be impossible to produce on any other synth than a MODX or Montage.

Thanks for the intro. Wouldn't this be even cooler if the smart morph position could be controlled by a joystick (think Korg WaveState) - however, I don't think it's missing much :-)

That’s what the “Superknob” does: you don’t have to use the touch screen, just turn the knob.

    • @TheEdwin73
      @TheEdwin73 Před 4 lety

it could have more points to be set in the screen, for the knob, or sequence to play back, like the 4 positions on the good old wavestation, in this case, they can implement a few geometric shapes, (or draw one yourself on screen), with several points in them, like a triangle or a circle, place those anywhere in the morph screen, and voila you have instant wavestation vector synhesis, and beyond at your fingertips...maybe the tech guys at yamaha can do that with future updates...but this update alone is fantastic, because they have made fm synthesis 'workable' and way more quick, to come up with new out-of-this-world-sounds.

Great thanks for UL on this feature - looks to be prime for use of the iPad as a controller surface. How could that be easily set-up?? Thanks and be safe! 😎🎹👍🍻

Thanks for your comment! To answer your Q: At this time there are only hacks to making external touch screens work. I would be very hesitant trying any of these work-arounds. I can see someone ZAPPING their machine! MODX go bye-bye....
But having said that, Yamaha clearly has the tech and know-how to make something like this happen. I mean, my old Yamaha P-115 connects to an iPad lol!
Anyway, thanks again for your support, stay safe!!!

@@SynthsandGuitars Hey thanks for your quick reply! Okay. Thinking about this after posting, it's probably simplest to link the iPad (Camera i/face connection) in to my PC-DAW>MIDI route out to MODX, and use if it works Spectrasonics Orb (or similar MIDI vectoring app that transmits MIDI CC) ... will have a play now I've updated last night! 😎🤘🎹🎶🍻

@@SynthsandGuitars :/ Dom (as in Sigalas, Yamaha) answered my same qu. from the other day as he has a couple of Smart Morph demo as expected now, and he replied only possible from MODX touchscreen (assume this means no way of controlling via MIDI CC in to MODX ....)😥 - never say never!!
