I wrote "Come Home" with many things on my mind. Here are just a few of my thoughts behind writing this song:
Though no perfect family exists, and we all have challenges, indivually we can do our part to make our families stronger. We can return to virtues which strengthen bonds and connection. We can repent. We can forgive. We can choose to abandon harmful habits that disconnect and choose to cultivate connection instead. We can choose to break cycles of abuse. We can work to ensure that our influence is creating love and kindness. We can be humble. We can change. Love is our motivator.
As we come home to truths embodied in the gospel of Jesus Christ, we will find true healing in our families. The Savior will help us. As we act in His name, doing as He would do, and praying for strength, we will find peace in our families now and in the eternity to come. There is much work to do to create peace in this world, and it starts with ourselves and what we can do to strengthen the family. This is our privilege and responsibility.
When we are aware of situations that are less than ideal, we can reach out to help and encourage. We can include others and extend nurturing and love to all we cross paths with. We all belong to the great family of God as brothers and sisters, and everyone deserves a place of belonging. As we do this using the gospel of Jesus Christ as our guide, we gather together and help all to come Home.
"The greatest joys and the greatest sorrows we experience are in family relationships. The joys come from putting the welfare of others above our own. That is what love is. And the sorrow comes primarily from selfishness, which is the absence of love. The ideal God holds for us is to form families in the way most likely to lead to happiness and away from sorrow. A man and a woman are to make sacred covenants that they will put the welfare and happiness of the other at the center of their lives. Children are to be born into a family where the parents hold the needs of children equal to their own in importance. And children are to love parents and each other."
