Al Boum Photo wins his first Cheltenham Gold Cup for Paul Townend and Willie Mullins

- What a classy performance this is.
The relatively unheralded Al Boum Photo (12/1) posted a top-class performance against some star staying chasers across Britain and Ireland to run out an excellent winner of the 2019 Magners Cheltenham Cup - and after many years of waiting, finally handing victory in the Cheltenham Festival highlight to perennial champion trainer Willie Mullins.
Mullins is the most successful trainer in the history of the Cheltenham Festival and has remarkably trained the Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up on six occasions, but he finally got his win in the most prestigious National Hunt race in the land here - with the final horse of his original four still in contention.
"I've got used to the disappointment of finishing second and I sort of resigned myself to never winning a Gold Cup," said Mullins, whose late father Paddy trained Dawn Run to victory in the 1986 race.
"To have three of my four runners out of the race before they came to the second last first time round - I was depending on one.
"Every time I looked at Paul, his body language told me he was very happy."
This was a first Cheltenham Gold Cup victory for the rider, too.
"I can't believe it," said an emotional Townend. "It means everything. It's the pinnacle and I can't believe I've won it.
"I got in a beautiful rhythm. When you're going well, it just seems so simple."

@Tommy Dunne the entire idustry is corrupt, bookies, trainers, some jockeys, after watching and following racing for many years that fact is the only cert! Hard enough pickibg a winner when only one or two in a race with any sort of chance , Cheltenham on paper they all have a chance, its a great spectical or it used to be or is that just me, who knows, good luck!

So the Gold Cup goes to Ireland and Willie Mullins can now seal himself in greatness with his Al Boum Photo. I was saddened by the news of Sir Erec in an earlier race, I think it was the Triumph Hurdle and another big priced winner in one of the later races after the Gold Cup.
Had Waiting Patiently and Bristol De Mai antepost before the king george hoping either would become one of the leading principals for the gold cup but after the fall i wasn't holding my breath for anything. At 20/1 a win would have been amazing, but i'm content with the place and that he proved he's not just a haydock specialist. Hopefully Topofthegame can bring me my first victory in the race next year
I think Delta Work would have caught Topofthegame if not for a bit of bad luck. Lostintranslation can also be a player. Next year's gold cup is already looking very tasty

That was some run from anibale fly too. Came from nearly 2nd last and encountered serious traffic to get up for second place.
Having recently. discovered BRitish Racing in ALL. it's glory on. Urine am indulging a live affair began sitting. eith my Father. in the words. When we emigrated he sent me lists of horses to watch in the coming season Wee rmember his Brigadier Gerard predictions . Watching the Jockeys congratulate each other & their appreciation of those fleet hooves. under those. Brave hearted. horses on deep green grass is almost mire nostalgia than is bearable. Involved here from breeding to flat Pt to.point & Steeplechase. where yes have had many moments BUT nothing compares to Home It is in the souls of so many different groups like my East End Father ...

@Simon Wren yeah because it wouldn't be distressing and disrespectful to show a horse passing you twat. Not entertainment, these horses love what they do and are very well treated, if they weren't doing this they'd be rotting in a field somewhere in the countryside. Be realistic here

I told my mates for months that al boum photo would win the gold cup after his only run this season prior to the gold cup at tranmore. I knew he would get further and he would win it if he got his act together

They say no horse has won the Gold Cup after not having a prep race since the 1930's. Why Percy didn't have one is a mystery

As I said in another post it would be no good if they ran Presenting Percy like they did in the RSA, by the time he was ready to go forward those at the head of the field would be gone beyond recall. The same thing happened to Don Poli a few years ago, but at least he managed to get placed.

When is nico de bonville and Nicky Henderson going to realise Might bite has to be in a clear lead from the start and given a breather before the home straight.
The horse was ridden this way for all of his novice races and then they change his style of racing.
The horse doesn't want to be racing amongst other horses.
I just don't think he's good enough, he always looks like he's going easy and then just goes like that. 2m7 horse, not 3m2 the extra few furlongs are just too much. Be interesting when he drops back in trip

I don't follow NH racing much any more.I remember when they first started being brought over, the consensus was that they matured very quickly but didn't develop.
I take it that this opinion has been revised?
@@Spectrescup Since then, statistics have shown that the racing career of these French horses is simply longer. The French AQPS breed has a heavier bone skeleton and is supposed to endure pain and effort more easily than English thoroughbreds. This French breeding exclusively devoted to National Hunt changed the game ....
al boum photo deserved to win the gold cup; he most certainly had the best current form of the irish horses; he would have had 2 more wins & a place if he hadn't fallen in those races.
native river bravely fought to retain his crown but everything was against him; he missed a prep race, the going wasn't heavy enough, tizzard's yard was out of form & he was forced back to midfield at the start of the race.
native river was the 2nd best horse in a race that suited horses with stamina; percy, obeaux, bells all proved to be non stayers.

Next years possible line up is looks much stronger if the likes of Delta Work, Topofthegame and Lostintranslation all race

Paul Townend. He has ridden for various trainers especially for Willie Mullins, often in the shadows of Ruby Walsh.
Paul Townsend rides for Willie Mullins, he is no.2 jockey behind Ruby Walsh. He is and has been a top class jockey for a number of years now, without getting the proper recognition bc he is no.2 jockey of Mullins. Ppl that watch racing know Paul is top class

Who knows now if Al Boum Photo might have beaten Presenting Percy in last year's RSA Chase if he hadn,t fallen when challenging. If he had done he would have started favourite for the Gold Cup instead of PP.

Yes it was rubbish, percy was injured, native river and might bite ran well below there best, elegant escape is the slowest horse in training and clan des obeaux doesnt stay. Be much harder for al boum photo this year.

I think Ruby Walsh was in that same area when Kauto Star pulled up in the 2012 renewal, won by the ill fated Synchronised.

The bizarre prep from the ‘genius’ Pat Kelly didn’t work out. Horse seemed fazed by the most competitive race over fences he’s ever faced - ears flat back from early and putting in an extra step at every fence. Wouldn’t be convinced he really wants 3m 2f either given how he faded up the hill.

Warren Leonard we’d all rather not see any horse lose its life on a racecourse but it’s the reality. To not show it is to gloss over the event. Not suggesting it should be replayed in slow motion but at least the race in its entirety should be shown. Just delusional to do otherwise.
