    Leaving with 20 min delay and arriving on time on a 160 km stretch is actually quite remarkable. However, in spite of being a low cost carrier, Flix should consider installing AC (every budget car has it these days) and on the other hand limiting the opening of the windows at 200 km/h also makes sense (and this should be one more reason for installing AC). Some sort of catering would also allow making some extra money (before they come upon the idea to charge extra for luggage).

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 8 měsíci +6

      I think the delay was eliminated thanks to a larger reserve in the schedule, similar to what e.g. Ryanair does. I think they will have to install at least some ventilation in the future. The absence of catering is quite surprising, because, for example, it is a fairly significant part of the income of budget airlines.

      @@PeteBrandy With a speed of 200 kph you can get from Leipzig to Berlin in 1:15h, like the ICE on this route.

    • @larsw.3240
      @larsw.3240 Před 8 měsíci +1

      AC is of course standard for new coaches, but this is modernized old rolling stock. It probably would have been pretty expensive to install it here.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 8 měsíci +3

      I think that the installation of air conditioning would mainly increase the weight of the carriage and then the braking percentages would no longer have to be met.

    • @larsw.3240
      @larsw.3240 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @PeteBrandy This is probably right. In addition to that you need to clear space for the installation of the AC-components in rolling stock that was never designed to accommodate this kind of system. Let alone all of the parts that are necessary to properly distribute the cool air throughout the whole car.

    Hello Pete, nice your Trip Report in 🇩🇪 with the Flixtrain. The price being cheap, I understand that there is no such thing as too much comfort. On the other hand, there aren't many people there. Thank you for your always excellent railway sharing for your advice. Greetings from Dives Cabourg in Prague 🇸🇽👋👍📽️🤩

      I go to the Railway museum on track 24 regularly every time I travel via Leipzig. I always give myself some time to get there (it's actually one of the platforms in the main departure hall).

    A great video Pete. I travelled from Berlin to Aachen with Flixtrain earlier this year and found them quite OK. They seem to attract much negativity, but if you consider them a train version of Flixbus, you can't go wrong. It's amazing rolling stock half a century old is still being used. Could you imagine Flixbus trying to use 50 year old coaches?? It just wouldn't work (unless you were seriously into retro tourism).

    • @PeteBrandy

      Hi Scott, thanks so much for watching! In my opinion, these trains are a good choice for travelers looking for transportation from point A to point B at a good price (and others can take the ICE train). I like these older types of coaches, similar ones are also operated by Alex (Bm coaches), but they still have compartments :-)

    Ufff, "poor ones", 60+ years in operation and still.
    This is the first time I see those coaches in 2+2 low-cost airliner configuration, last time that was some combi weirdo comparments of 3+2 and quasi-bays of 3+2 and 0+1...
    I have been to Leipzig once for a week, business trip. The Main station used to be our afternoon target, chicken for my coworkers, platforms for me.
    Have You been near to Hamburger Flyer ???
    I can still smell that fuel and grease... In my opinion it is the real ancestor of high speed railways in Germany - it was the fastest scheduled service at the time.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 8 měsíci +2

      This journey was a return to history, first Gleis 24 and then my ride on former InterRegio coaches. I always go to see the Flying Hamburger when I'm in Leipzig :-)

    Well, Flixtrain certainly makes the most of these ancient carriages.
    AC and catering would be nice.
    Maybe they can get their hands on some hand me down IC1 cars from DB once they're being retired there. They're not much younger though I guess...

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I think these coaches will probably remain in service for some time, they were renovated quite recently in the Talbot workshops. But on-board catering would certainly also be profitable for the operator.

      Railcars were in service until 1959. From what I could find, 2 pieces remained, one is in Leipzig and one in the museum in Nürnberg. But I think that even one is no longer mobile

    Unfortunalety there are very few flixtrains (On most routes 1-3 per day, some of them not every day). They are more delayed than DB trains, often several hours and very seldom on time. I never used it, because it´s operated so rarely. But after this video i want to try it. Normally Flixtrains are not so empty like in this video, so thats a good idea to reserve the neighbour seat. In DB trains that´s impossible although you have to pay even for your own seat. The main reason for the sucess of Flixtrain is, that they are very cheap compared to DB trains.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yes, I also found out that some routes are not operated regularly every day, so it was quite difficult to find a train that would fit into my travel plan. Otherwise, I was looking for the less busy section, that's why I chose the section Leipzig - Berlin and I chose the coach where there were the least reservations.. I recently met FlixTrain in Hamburg and it was really crowded. But the price was really favorable compared to DB.

    Dobrý, ty okna jsou asi kvůli bezpečnosti při jízdě 200 km/h

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Určitě je to ten důvod, akorát těch omezeně otvíratelných oken mohlo být vice, nebo na ta zbylá okna dát alespoň vyklápěčky.

    Pěkné bylo, jak stáhl 20 min. zpoždění a do Berlína přijel včas. Jinak na kratší cesty asi OK, na delší cestu bych s ním asi nejel, hlavně v létě by mi vadila absence klimatizace. Také je škoda, že tam nenabízí malé občerstvení, jako například u ČD Minibar.

    • @PeteBrandy
      @PeteBrandy  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Ono se to celkem dalo pokud jsou na 160 km trase jen 2 zastávky.. myslím že ten jízdní řád mají záměrně dělaný s rezervou, jako to dělají např. nízkonákladové aerolinky.. Stejnou trasu jsem jel i s ICE a tam je jízdní doba v průměru 1h10m se stejným počtem zastávek. Ta chybějící klima byla v den mé cesty celkem znát, původně jsem si říkal že dám delší trasu, ale nakonec jsem byl rád že jsem jel jen do Berlína. Jinak minibar si myslím že by se tam určitě uživil.

  • @borispankovcin9359

    Well, doing long speedy routes, basically competing with ICE, with low price like this looks good, but still... The quality of right is just not good. Even though I generally try to save cost when travelling anywhere, I always try to stay away from Flixtrain/bus as much as possible. They are sacrificing too much for low price, at least for my taste. But clearly they have their customers and competition is always good, so, yeah, it's good that they are running. But I will personally pass on this experience :D
