- A visit to my good friend Tom to buy (for the 2nd time!) a classic PPG synth from him. We spent a few hours in his studio and went through his equipment, that features many classic pieces of gear. Fired up the newly acquired Zhiyun Smooth Q and iPhone X, and this is a condensed "best of" version of the visit. A huge thank you to Tom for sharing his knowledge and demonstrating the gear for us!

Thanks for the tour, Tom! It's so great to see a collection of such unique gear. Truly amazing! And it's nice to see a modern studio where a computer is not the center of it all.
This man needs a youtube channel! Amazing studio btw.
More studio tour videos please! Can't get enough of them..
Nobody ever talks about the monthly electrical bill and cable millage :-) Nice video 10/10
It’s really not that bad.....My studio is bigger and you only turn on what you are using when your using it.
The rest sits in the gear room when you need it...
The big studio bills are running SSL desks 24/7 in a comecial studio which make income and are tax deductible.
The big bills at this home use level are the maintenance cost of the equipment.
Absolute Media....Im not sure what you mean.....Its a studio tour from memory...
Absolute Media ....There where valve synths machines made in the 1920 & 1930’s but they where experimental.
All modern synth are not valve based to the best of my knowledge.
@@drorlando2416 yes there is some modern valve synth from rusia apparatus.su
Excellent - New Order hated the Marshall Time Modulator because Hannett tinkered around endlessly with them. They called them "Marshall Time Wasters". I love them.
Good way to run up the studio bill
Man, that Oberheim 2 Voice, holly cow it sounds good! Tom's studio is jam-packed with vintage goodness!
10.52 - A Sycologic M16 midi switcher! I really wish someone would replicate these. Rick Wakeman buys them up secondhand whenever he sees them and swears by them. I know midi din is old tech essentially, but it would be so nice just to route devices without using a plethora of merge boxes etc... Excellent stuff!
Thanks for the fascinating and inspiring video! Content can't get much better than this! It's clear that each piece of gear here was selected with great experience and care. It was captivating to watch and hear all the insights to what makes some of the instruments (like the K250) so special.
Tom seems like someone who's very skilled at maintaining and servicing his gear. What might be an interesting video topic to some Synthmania viewers would be some basic advice and wisdom on assessing, maintaining and servicing vintage gear and/or stories and wisdom about purchasing and selling gear on-line.
Loved this tour! Thanks Paolo
Radikal Technologies Spectralis 2 ... what a machine !
OMG I love it! so much flavor (really mind blowing)
I really appreciate that you took the time to play and mess around with some of the more odd-ball gear, it made for a very great studio tour. Tom seems like a real nice guy.
Is there anywhere that we can find Toms music, or does he mostly mess around and have fun on his synths (like me!)?
Morning Tom! For the rest of the people who commented on the studio - it is too bad he wasn't interviewed back in the early 2000's - at that time, the count of pre-midi, unique analog synths - was what - around 74? (Plus the demolished B3 organ) Nice interview and it looks great - very tidy!
Cool to see the Deluge amongst all that amazing gear.
Guy has good taste,
I would love to go play in his studio! Dang! How nice! The hardest part would be figuring out which piece of equipment to start playing first!!!!!
so, after tom said he didnt need drums much, does he make ambient music? cause if he does with that arsenal, i would love to hear it!
Me too!
Loved the tour. 2.3 into a 480L. Out of this world
I don't feel so guilty about my own GAS after watching videos like this :-)
offworld network Yep. I need: Roland JD-XA, Korg Prologue, Behringer Deepmind 12 ..
I really enjoyed this
Thank you
Time modulator is KILLER!!!!!!!!
Hey Paulo, have you ever done a studio tour of your gear? Id love to see what other gear you got in store! :)
Impressive studio, but where's the music made with this stuff?
@@holygeneration7 what a shame; that's so much money to spend to not be a musician!
@@foreverseethe synths are also tools for sound design right ? Keyboards in this context are simply interfaces to trigger sounds, but it's not an obligation to use it. It's more of a tradition than anyhting else. We've seen keyboards everywhere, yeah, but a sequencer (a DAW too) can produce great results, if you're chasing sound, and not so much looking to perform.
Your next studio tour should be your own; just you talking about every single piece of gear like you did in this and briefly demoing your favorite sounds.
- This boy's got all the toys :-D
- It's always good to have a friend that is more a nerd then yourself :-D
- Using a PPG Keybed as a Masterkeyboard ist pretty advanced :D
- You could send a casio through the H8000 at it will sound heavenly :D
- 2x 480 L damn, why? :-D
- 2x PPG 2.3 damn, why?
ola, fx paradise ;) fine roland sound, spectralis and other monster, friendly guys ;) cheers
12'05 another IM-90 lurking down there! :-)
What was that 5402 used for in the 80s?
Just wanted to comment on your excellent and steady camera hand. :)
Thank you, but all the credit goes to the Zhiyun Smooth Q ;-)
I would love to know where he got replacement displays for his Roland RSP-550 boxes...they're obviously replaced. This would help a lot of folks keep theirs alive!
300 likes! This is excellent! :)
Thank you, Sam!
Thats the ultimate HS!..expensive machine i love;..Bricastis ..Publison...Eventide H8000!! and at each time 2 units!!
Hi Tom! 😁
You forgot the Synthstrom Deluge !!! How could ya ?
5:05 is this the sound of the Duran Duran "Planet Earth" intro? :))
and i thought i had seen it all, but the Kniforium? Damn it looks good and sounds amazing (listen to soundcloud etc) But 9K euro is a bit steep :)
great video btw
jaw dropping)) does he make any music? I 'd love to hear it
Probably not.
If he makes his chan, please notify your squad!
When Moby is jacked and has a huge vintage synth collection ;o
I would only be able to operate one thing; the wall plug that reads on/ off.
Impressive. I found a lot of sounds that I liked in this video. The problem is, now I need to buy some expensive pieces...
Just figured out who Tom is nearly a week after seeing this vid lol, I knew that studio looked familiar :)
Who is Tom? Where could one find his music? Sounds like he may be someone whose music we are already familiar with?
Give me the Spectralis pleeeaaaaseee!Awesome synths and very nice people!
Please one question ....what is the best way for connect and disconnect your own home studio without damage the equipment? ......i have 4 keyboards , mixe table , pc , and sound system .
If I understand your question correctly, the best way would be a patchbay?
Nice tour! I'd love to have some of those older synths.... but next time, consider bringing an external audio recorder. Would definitely improve the audio, even though it sounds just fine as it is.
Thank you, actually, here I am using an external audio recorder already. You can see it taped with velcro above the MacBeth Elements.
Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but it doesn't look like that's connected to the mixing console? The talking sounds good, it's just if the console had been directly connected to it I think it would have a bit better.
I see. You meant to say, get the audio feed from the console. We didn't have the proper adapter. I interpreted it that you thought the audio was coming from the iPhone's built in mic. I should have specified that I was using a PCM recorder. As a plus, most of the studio tours out there are just people talking about the gear, never demonstrating it. I think this one has the audio as a bonus, at least compared to most of the others
What A/D does Tom use to get audio from his Toft board into the computer? Thanks!!
Update from Tom: he uses a Forssell MADA-2a
🤗👍🏻🤗👍🏻
@ 5:32 he says, "their version of Black Hole" WHo is he talking about? Band name plz?
mrmongo673 eventide blackhole. It's an algorithm on the reverb unit
Was hoping to hear both your takes on the Streichfett ... seems to be a well-respected option for strings ... ??
Ah, we totally forgot to check that one out... I plan to get one at some point for review
SynthMania - Seems it's not for realistic strings, but rather, emulations of classic string emulators (how meta! ;). Thanks Paolo - Be well! K
Don’t put the price of RSP550s up - I’m looking for another one !!! Great sounding machines - fairly brings my K5m to life :)
I agree. Fabulous FX unit.
Is he a hobbyist just goofing around?
hi paolo, what effects units are used ,cheers!
Hi, Freddie, the units are listed in the description - thank you
Great studio Tom! Wanna sell that Oberheim TVS?
I can´t believe the publison infernal machine was not demoed! Heresy!!!!
It was demoed
I´ve missed the little bit with the PPG, must have been the beer...Mi scusi signore!
He should sell sounds to movie makers since he can make literally any sound they need...
You guys should make a song
Great equipment, but tell me the truth: After a short time his back is hurting or am I wrong ? I am sure it‘s not good for his health....
Update from Tom: "yes, had pulled a muscle in my back earlier in the week; better now."
Sad that the single most unobtainable thing for me there is the evenet controller...
What about #2? :-)
Coming soon!
Its scary that he does not make music. Tens of thousands of people around the world are into synths but cant create anything. So weird. Its like someone collecting paint and brushes but never paints.
Jan-Martin Ulvåg hopefully, he has studio cats coming in to play. But, maybe it’s just a hobby and he’s just a collector. Who knows?
Nice MacBeth Elements...
y'all just SKIPPED right over the Deluge.
hmmmm-- mama gonna be mad
I fell asleep before I was 5 minutes into it.
Synths are not for you.
Spazzoid Studio Hardly, I have 15 of them.
Love watching studio tours on youtube, but PLEASE use a better camera/mic setup.
This guy has some expensive toys
