    Tami and Gabor talk about the immune system and how it is connected to healthy, emotional expression, and why it matters so much that we own our healthy anger and express it. They also talk about how our body can function as a teacher, and how Gabor views such diagnoses as ADHD and depression, and how his views differ from the way the medical community views those conditions.
    Sounds True was founded in 1985 by Tami Simon with a clear mission: to disseminate spiritual wisdom. Since starting out as a project with one woman and her tape recorder, we have grown into a multimedia publishing company with more than 80 employees, a library of more than 1500 titles featuring some of the leading teachers and visionaries of our time, and an ever-expanding family of customers from across the world. In more than three decades of growth, change, and evolution, Sounds True has maintained its focus on its overriding purpose, as summed up in our Mission Statement.

    Thank you for all the work that you do. You saved my life ❤️ after being poked by over 80 doctors over a 3 year period and going from Lyme to fibromyalgia to lupus, with no available help, I finally understood now, after 7 years later of suffering over 100;symptoms that there was a deeper explanation. Was raised by a narcissistic mother who created a narcissist environment since the beginning 41 yrs ago. I left home at 16 because I ‘knew’ something was off and would only visit her once every 3 yrs because I would become physically ill just in anticipation. She got cancer and passed 5 months ago and although I have a very VERY long journey of reprogramming EVERYTHING I know the KNOWLEDGE that you share has literally made me feel like a newborn at 41. I will be forever thankful to you for helping me see. 🙏🏼

    Dr. Mateo is so right on, my friend is in his 40's has ADHD I had dinner with his family. I observed his mom correcting him by screaming at him in this eerie, screechy voice at that moment I saw my friend face turn beet red and he start shaking. Later, I told my friend that his mom screaming had him shaking and red faced, He goes. " I didn't know that happened?" I realized he was totally disconnected from the body, to survive the abuse from his childhood. His ADHD was a coping mechanism created by him to shield the self, from the trauma of mental, verbal and physical abuse from the mom. His siblings one had a nervous breakdown, one is an alcoholic, one rocks back and fourth, to self soothe while conversing. It's so sad. How different their lives would be if she just loved, comforted , cared and accepted them

      Panic attacks are terrifying. The first one I had was a complete shock. Now when I sense one coming on I get up and move around, try to get my muscles moving and find people so I can distract myself. I get them if I’ve been up too late partying. Not always, but that’s the reason and I can control how often I do that. If there were other causes I’d try to do something to reduce them as they take a lot of effort to overcome once they start and leave me tired. I hope you are coping ok with yours.

      This is one of the strangest illnesses. It is excruciating, dramatic -- but not dangerous. It's one of the most severely symptomatic but least "serious" psychological problems a person can have. EVERYONE who has ever had this becomes convinced they will be "the one" who never recovers. But recovery is basically 100%.
      Emma Stone had one of the worst cases I've ever heard of. Kim Basinger struggled with agoraphobia after her attacks subsided. Agoraphobia is sometimes a complication. :/
      Looking back, I can hardly believe I ever had it. Doesn't seem possible. At the time, I was sure it would never stop. It's not a "deep" disorder. It won't muck up your personality or anything. Reading the story of a decorated veteran who had it helped me; he wrote: if I had not been brave in combat, I'd wonder if I was a coward. He recovered fast, actually. Knowing the panic was not "him," but just a termporary condition, helped him to turn the corner.

My anger erupted as a teenager and young adult. I left home at 16 never to return. Avi mae, look into family constellation work. When people name their sons/daughters with the same name as another person in the family tree, the son/daughter takes on unconsciously the destiny of the individual with the name.
      Also look into transgenerational trauma and scripts. The works of Anne Ancelin Schutzenberger and Bert Hellinger should give you more clarity on your situation and those unhealthy dynamics in your family tree.

It's opened up a whole new world of knowledge. And yesterday while watching a normal programme where the daughter had a bad childhood, something in me triggered somehow physically and I had to go to the bathroom and kept (TMI) dry wretching and breathing like an asthma attack (but my lungs were open) and had a tiny bit of sick come up but it felt totally emotional. And after I was relaxed. It was so weird like I'm hoping the honest work I'm doing about my younger self is working and yesterday it literally felt like I threw up a piece of guilt lodged inside me for my negative feelings towards my mum when I was young. @Jenni Yvonne "...yesterday It literally felt like I threw up a piece of guilt..." Great imagery! The first time I heard the word 'gaslighting' was when, after hanging up the phone from a particularly contentious call with my mother, my then 13 yr old son said to me, "She's gaslighting you again..." I asked him what he meant and he said, "Let me show you something." He took me to his computer and pulled up a website - Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers. What a revelation. By way of my 13 yr old son! As he grew older he did not like what he kept seeing me go through & so had decided to do something about it. He's now 30. Over the years I discovered the demons that both my mother & her mother had had to deal with & as a result she & I were actually able to come to a hard won understanding before she died at the age of 95. The first time I heard Gabor Maté speak I knew he KNEW. (I dealt with autoimmune & other issues for 18+ years) His counsel is always solid, compassionate and correct. If you are breathing, you are not destroyed forever. You have a chance to raise your consciousness, to 'recover' (uncover) a part of you that had to get buried, perhaps, to survive the upbringing you had. I believe you! Your healing is a very worthwhile thing....and is possible NOW. May you find the inspiration, help or experience you need for healing and living with more joy, health, sanity internally and otherwise. xo.

    Just listening to that one quote about the child feeling the parent's pain goes in parallel with what some recognize now with the mother child physiology during pregnancy. If the mother's kidneys aren't filtering properly, the embryo isn't getting filtered either. With humans consuming food which is not the default diet, resulting in most people having compromised kidney and lymphatic systems, it is why we see younger and younger people getting chronic illnesses.

      Yes - all too often we come to believe that "our story" defines us. When, if we can get enough help in order to gain the necessary insight, we would see that "our story" was the manifestation of a life sorely lacking in not only information, but also in any proper and effective tools in the toolbox. Just as you cannot grow a healthy physical body without proper food, nor can you grow a healthy mind and psyche rich in confidence and efficacy without having the necessary "nutrition for the mind", such as being believed in, being taught useful, fundamental and transferable skills, as well as wisdom, and just how to be both a decent human being and to have the knowledge of how to make your way in the world with dignity and with integrity.

    Integral Dukkha - The first ennobling truth of Buddhism is that “dukkha, (suffering, incapable of satisfying, painful) is an innate characteristic of existence in the realm of samsara”. To spend a lifetime learning this truth to some degree could mean a life well spent. Gabor seems to have learned this to a beautiful degree. He tells us that mental “illness” such as anxiety, depression, and drug addiction are not illnesses. They are not even the problem. They are ways of coping we learned in our early childhood. Dukkha is the problem. The solution, for lack of a better word, may be to directly face our dukkha as emotionally mature adults. It is nice seeing Tami still well, strong, and relevant. I fondly recall many years ago, when the old boys of the integral corporate establishment were spending a huge amount of time and effort trying to cover up for a strongly endorsed wanna be “integral” “leader” who was particularly fond of inflicting great harm upon innocent young girls, it was Tami who was one of the first ones to stand up and show with her decisions and actions that she was not going to go along with this kind of thing. May you be well Gabor and Tami.

      You're right, one can become addicted to emotions, specially the ones we experience most. Also if you feel like you've been angry all your life it has kind of become part of your identity so changing it will feel like your kind of losing that identity, but this is your ego self ruling and allowing you to stay the same, because the ego self never wants to change. But the good news is that within you there is a supreme / higher self, full of love, joy, peace, acceptance. Discover it. Stay conscious. Good luck my friend.

    these are my sentiments, observations and experiences also, nice to hear the reflection. It is pertinent to mention the latest coaching pseudo spiritual messages proliferating from the US right now that are also really idiosyncratic / detrimental - - 'its a choice' - your choice, mental health / depression etc. On one very initial and shallow level perhaps, but that response comes from those who have never been there in the murky depths where the multi-layered programme is running without your consent from ancestors through present living relatives - the hive/group, underlayers of traumatic experience. it is only a decision when a certain amount of healing and conscious awareness has taken effect and is a discipline to choose differently and quickly and then before it occurs and or not at all (takes a specific type of healing to remove the programme altogether albeit very possible). Thank you for a great interview.

Discussion goes both ways - how childhood trauma changes actual brain physiology and how adaptations are often lifelong, creating long-standing relational challenges vs how the brain has properties of elasticity and love cures all. My view is one cannot undo the past and this we manage these issues life long. But I would love Gabor to expound on this in a presentation. He is an amazing thinker and speaker.

    • @michaeljensen4650
      @michaeljensen4650 Před 5 lety +6

      Gabor Mate is a profound authority on this subject, which may be one of the most important and urgent issues of our time. You cannot love someone into good health after they have developed a life long pattern of pathological behavior. Both physiological and psychological health are determined by the early environment. The physical and mental health of the mother and father as well as the early environment are determining factors which are crucial for developmental well being. It is very difficult to treat people with congenital diseases because of inherited gene damage from environmental toxins, toxins and mutated genes which have been passed down to them from their parents. It is also nearly impossible to change people with certain psychological pathologies such as Borderline Personality Disorder, Malignant Narcissism or Anti-Social Personality Disorder.
