Saw Dexter perform this song live when I was an undergrad at the University of Pittsburgh. Amazing

The performance, the look, the feel - a model of coolness.

A Dexter Gordon classic with George Cables on the piano, Rufus Reid on the bass and Eddie Gladden on the drums. This is just amazing, as Dex had a very direct way of improvising!

One of the best hard bop rhythm sections ever assembled. The great Eddie Gladden and Rufus holding it down.

why we love dexter? I guess its a mixture of charms, intelligence and sound of the horn and the use of only the right notes - nothing misty -meant to impress. and all exactly to the point his timing on milliseconds is the nucleus of his talent - all together that gives a good salvation to many a confused brain! olav bøe norway

Dexter Gordon had this fullness to his sound that made it seem like every single note meant something

All these young punks on MTV who think they're cool need to see this and listen to it with an open mind, then they'd know what cool and having talent is all about. This is my favorite Dexter recording, but I'm not sure this was taken from the same broadcaste I saw on TV in 1973. When it comes to any kind of sax, Charlie Parker and Dexter Gorden RULE!

@RFranklinCarter Thanks, found "Tanya" on on a 2004 Blue Note release on CD with possibly the same name ( the liner notes arn't very clear on that )as the original LP "One Flight Up" from tunes recorded June 2, 62, in Paris. Tracks 1-3, including "Tanya" were originally issued as BST 84176. That version is 18min/15secs (same on CD) & takes up one whole side of the original LP, & it's pure creativity all the way. I remember reading somewhere that Gordon recorded it at some point in S.F.

@DickWhittington1000 I am fairly certain that this performance appears on a DVD called Dexter Gordon: Live in San Francisco. The release date is 1979, but I don't know if 1979 is also the date that the show was recorded. You can find the DVD on Amazon.

I guess that it's just a matter of opinion, but I can think of at least 4 tenor players from the same era whose phrasing is much smoother than Dexter's. Still he is quite a good player.
