RUDELY WOKEN BY LOCALS In A STORMY Peak District (UK Van Life)

- We're nervously experiencing some more of Van Life in the UK this week, as we head to the Peak District to a place described as a Van Life Mecca!
But it doesn't all go to plan when we we are rudely woken by locals in the middle of the night, and the stormy weather starts to leak through the roof and INTO our cupboards!!!
Plus Ric gets a bit of road rage and asks a VERY controversial question. Who's ready for the comments on this one? 😂

without being harsh the speed of how quick the dog learns to heel is down to how much effort YOU put in. theres no such thing as a bad dog, just bad dog owners. its up to you folks
As soon as Rosie pulls, you turn around and walk the other way and if you can, stop to give her a treat when she's at your heel. Walk off, she pulls again, you turn around and walk the other way again... etc etc. she gets a wee treat each time she's at your heel. works really well and doesn't actually take that long to get her in the swing of walking beside you. She's so gorgeous!!! I'd love a wee rosie too. 🥰
Top advice.. I have two rottweilers and this is what I did with them. You are leader, so you lead. If they pull to go somewhere, you turn the other way round and keep doing it until they become discombobulated, and then they will start to follow lead. ❤❤❤
A tip from someone who's handled Alsatians and Great Pyrenees I would recommend throwing the collar (as it chokes the dog) in the bin and get a harness with a dog that pulls use both hand with the lead running across you that way you can use both hands to stop the pull, don't yank the dog give firm voice commands and reward with a treat when it does something right.
We have a 40kg golden retriever, terrible for pulling on the lead. We got a harness where you clip the lead at his chest so if he pulls on the lead it just turns him around. The difference is incredible, so easy to walk him now x
Temporary fix for a leaky roof is a disposable nappy taped up there, if the burners going it dries it out for next time/until you do a proper job.
If you want to look around a cotton mill properly, try Styal Mill/ Quarry Bank Mill which is owned by the National Trust and is definitely worth a visit.
Hi guys there’s many dog trainers on CZcams,Hampshire spaniel training,Mordor gundogs,The dog therapist ,I use all of these they all have videos on puppy heeling I have a 7 month old springer that walks perfectly to heeling, and does exactly what it’s told, put the work in and you will be rewarded, you have the time.
We have a lurcher so can only use a harness, it has attachments for the back and the front (chest) of the dog. I used to just attach on the back ring and have a long lead so he could have a bit of freedom. My wife uses a lead with a attachment at both ends so clips on the back and the front (chest) of the harness and he walks sooo much better with her I’ve changed to my wifes way. The dog will learn pretty quickly if he trys to pull with a lead on the front of the harness it just turns him around so stops pulling real quick.
Thankyou, a few people saying a harness will be better
Re your ceiling leaks I've got a thin fibre glass roof and I've found butl tape to be fantastic no leaks in five years. It's got plenty of give so you put a thick 8mm bead in the gap between roof and cable gland screw it down and squeeze it up to 4 or 5mm then seal over the top with sicaflex 521. The 521 just stops the butl getting washed away. It basically the same as window putty and lasts for a very long time and copes with heat/ cold expansion/ contraction. Its what people use on fibreglass RV roofs and well worth doing.
As the US van life, people say on the litter front "Leave no trace". Great video.
Take only memories, leave only footprints.
My puppy used to pull on her lead until I bought her a harness. Worth a try
Hope valley is such a beautiful place, as soon as I saw where you were I knew instantly, winnats pass is an amazing road so steep. I have a video of me riding my motorbike up there about 5 years ago on my CZcams 😊
So lovely, just a shame we didn't get lucky with the weather this time
Cannot believe you were only 5 minutes away from my house you would have been more than welcome to of come round for a coffee. It was the carnival in Wirksworth today lots of things for the children to have done they would of loved it there was a farmers market on all day too it was only up the road from where you were in Cromford. All
The quaint shops were open too. Xx
Ah that sounds brilliant! Xx
For our springer spaniel, we used a halti head harness, chest harness, elasticated leads and neither worked. A friend told me about the "figure 8 rope" leads that go over the nose, bought one and I could walk him on my little finger, honestly I couldn't believe the transformation. Best £8 I'd spent.
Keep up the great work, love the channel!
Nick
I find when my dog pulls, i just stop walking, i say wait a lot & make sure shes not on a ling lead, when she is on a long lead, try get her to to stop & come back, spaniels are mesnt to be easier to train, good luck 🤞🏻 but shes just excited to be out 😀 shes a gorgeous girl 😍 awesome vlog guys 🌹🔥🥂
Thanks for the advice ⭐️ it's definitely easier when one of us walks her at the moment to focus on the training. She gets very excited when we're all out together, but good to get her used to both scenarios I guess x x
@@TouringwiththekidsI don't think you'll have a problem, she's a baby & seeing lots of open space 😂 I'd be happy 😁 you're one big happy family & you know what you're doing ❤🌹she's got her perfect happy place with you guys ❤
Yaaaay always can’t wait for your videos on a Sunday xxx
The rain likes you !
Teddy is so cute it’s nice you and teddy brought back piper , and Jack some treats not forgetting Cara , one thing I would like u to get Rosie is a collar to go over his chest and clips at top of his shoulders that he’s not pulling around his neck love your videos ❤️
Great video, as for Rosie she’s still learning, ours did the same not long ago.
You should try Redcar for a park up just past the old steel works it’s on a pan insular it’s full of van life we go there our selfs one side you have the shipping port and you can see all the ships and boats coming in and the other side is the beach and when the tide is out you can walk across and go to the little town it’s amazing 😊
Thanks for the suggestion x
Winnats Pass is stunning, full of history (including a pair of lovers who ran away to get married, and were murdered by the miners), and the whole Castleton area is amazing. All the caves have something different to offer, and I feel so lucky to live in Sheffield, and can visit the place whenever.
Oh wow, what a story. No wonder Ric felt a bit creeped out 🤣
No camping behaviour off grid to me includes the levelling blocks but yes to litter picking, usually not other campers either but we get the blame! Hope you get leak sorted - I carry one of those collapsible ladders that concertina in on themselves, never know when you might need to get up on the roof. Yes to treats for Kira 💕
Love these videos as I would love to travel but can’t due to my health so you help me explore thank you keep the good videos going please. With my sprocker (springer cross cocker spaniel) two point harness with two clip lead one clip on back of harness and one on collar and front of harness 4:13
I have a harness like that, mekuti brand, the lead attached to the normal location is the main one, with the one that goes around the lower neck used to provide a 'pulse' to bring the dogs attention back to you
Only downside is that you really need to use 2 hands to signal clearly ... I use it as one of my dogs feels threatened by cars / vans / motorbikes (anything that growls) and tries to attack them, so getting her attention so she knows a treat is available is usually enough ...
I used to live in dove holes just outside Buxton the weather was brutal for 9 yrs in the end was made redundant and moved back to Sussex much better . Castle ton is beautiful and at Christmas is amazing .pity you didn't vgo down the caverns , Rosie is finding her feet now pickle. Cromford mill used to have shops in there.
The Cromford canal and Matlock Bath are beautiful and like the inland seaside to us locals.
You need to carry a tube of CT1, can applied to a wet surface and even underwater and starts work immediately and will cure off completely in about 12hrs
Love your channel.....what a fantastic place to visit, as for your kids going out doing a litter pick...
Woow that took me back alot of years, always after a scout camp....we all packed up and then did a litter pick, it's something I still do today.
Least ya got better with 7.5t from a van.
My sister lives in buckston......and her family are totally outdoor lots.
Thay could of took you all caving.....even your kids (my sis is vetted and fully trained to do kid activities).
Get to bottom of the ingress of water,
Happy trucking.
One question, do you have to run on hgv rules, taco, op licence and 6/8 week safty checks???
I use to go to Buxton especially the swimming baths and to the gardens in the summer I didnt live far away
We have a sprocker she used to have a harness but pulled to much and most spaniel owners I spoke to said either a halti or a figure of 8 lead, we got the halti and she walks a lot better now
Your kids are living the dream
Glad you enjoyed Cromford. I feel your pain with the sheep, I grew up staying on that field with my parents in the caravan, I used to sleep in a tent as the side of the van and would often get woken by the sheep trying to get in or eat the tent. 😂
Haha brilliant 🤣 you poor thing xxx
You need to buy a tarp with weights that you can hang the tarp over the top of the lorry with it weighted down in a pinch like that.
Get Rosy a harness we’ve got a proper dimwit husky and we have attached a doggy shock absorber to the lead. Just a thought.
And the cave you went to the entrance is really nice inside aswell it is safe and the second cave u went into is just a tunnel leads to no were ha
I have that dog water bottle. You don't need to take the silicone bit off you just flip it over and squeeze the water into it and then flip it back over 👍
I know, we had one of our young fans (6 years old] send us a video of how it works. Absolute genius. We never knew 🤣🙈
Hi Rick and family. I met you on your Needham market site last week and was wondering if you could help me out. We are wanting to replace our existing door and frame on our ex sainsbury home delivery van to camper conversion, and seeing yours wondered who you purchased it from. Would really appreciate your reply. Safe journey, best wishes to you all. David and Beverley Norfolk
Sounds like you need some ct1 sealant which works even when wet, I'm sure you're already aware 😀 get your raincoat on rick 😅
Fantastic to see you all again
Your right about the drivers in uk
The things that they do on the roads
😫😫😫😠
So the dog that is a little bit of work you have to put in there to make him hiel, just praktice with traits , put him in front of you let him sit, lay down, then hiel and treat then follow and sit and treat, repeat again and again. So she learns the comand quickly. you can bring the pulling down with a harnas for the dog were de lash is in the middel of it so not around here neck. Better to correct when you walk and better for the dog. Wishing u s6 and have a great week
I've not had much success training dogs not to pull. The standard method is to change direction every time they pull (usually with a command like heal or come) - but with a spaniel you may get bored before she does!
I've tried using a harness that pulled down when the dog pulled, but that made their armpits red. I've tried a halti that looks like a muzzle and pulls their head round ... though that only had the right effect a few times before they twisted their neck to stop it working. The dog also kept trying to walk on 3 legs so they could try to pull it off with the other leg!
There's 8 years between my daughter and son, they got on really well for a few years and do again, but not so much for a couple of years in the middle. There was also a lot that changes in terms of parenting advice in 8 years! I guess having Jack & Teddy would counteract these issues ... though I'm not sure if you have space for a 4th seat in the back of the cab ...
I would recommend getting a harness for your lovely dog (whose name temporarily escapes me, sorry!) so if you have to stop suddenly, her weight held by a larger area and not just her neck. I think you have her lead round one of the seat bases already, but if not, having a lead secured (you can leave it attached to the truck ready for use) is a good idea, especially if one of us bad British drivers gets in Ric's way!
Thanks for a great vlog, lovely to see you all have fun in spite of the weather!
Harness seems to be the way forward I think 👍 thanks for watching ☺️
What a great place tebay is great food and shop. £26 a night is about average now
Good night everyone I love watching your videos of you and your adventures in your motor home how's everyone going I hope you are all well and enjoying your adventures in your motor home please keep your videos going on your you tube channel please keep safe and warm love you all
Thankyou x
If you went further down the road there is a cave at the end of it at bottom of mam tor it's amazing done mam tor about 5 times now sunset is amazing up there
Ahhh I bet! Shame we had such rubbish weather or we would have given it a go 🌧😥
Rick keep doing van life, you won't make it singing lol. Come to Australia for lovely sunshine. Queensland is called the Sunshine State. Dang water leaks, be a pain in the b#t. Rosie looks content travelling. Need a seat for her. The top of that pass in the mountain looked great. Rosie is your baby. No more chewing bean bags girl. Catch up next week and stay safe. Love from Australia .❤❤❤❤❤
Haha yeah the singing ain't getting us nowhere 🤣 thanks for tuning in ☺️❤️
Ex trucker here yes couldnt agree more ,how some of these people have passed a driving test is beyond me ,they are absolutly clueless
A harness works a treat X
Stones in a bottle shake when they pull and stop used it it works
With all those leaks and clothes getting wet outside makes me wish you guys had a dehumidifier. They use a lot of electricity though (400 watts!) so not sure how you'd fit one to a van
To be honest, I would have stuck to the main road through Buxton as it is easier although there are a few roundabouts than going down the road you went down in 12:19 which is properly narrow.
Local knowledge is a great thing.
Have you tried a harness with your dog . Helps with the pulling. Our cockapoo is much better on a harness .
Just got one, so much better! x
Harness and a springy lead (not a flexi one)
Definitely try a harness on Rosie our dog pulled on a collar not on the harness
Worst drivers? Belgium!!! Driven around Europe a lot and no doubt whatsoever.
After all your sunny videos in Spain and Morocco I found the weather on this trip depressing.I bet it won’t be long before you go abroad again 😭
Not long.... ☺️🥰
As a matter of interest. How many RVs come with auto-level jacks. I know your home is custom, but would it be possible to retrofit or would that be hyper-expensive.
Treats work almost every time
No wedges, we spent a couple of nights there. 55 vans there one night.😂😂
Oh wow! We have seen some pics of it mega packed out! think the weather kept alot of people away whilst we visited
Worst Drivers are in Perth Australia, When in Castleton you should of gone down one of the mines Speedwell BlueJohn etc . Also In Buxton gone ad had a look in the Devonshire Dome
Yes, about Moroccon traffic! Less rules, more people participating in the less rules policy (mostly, it's what they're used to). But even though everyone starts driving at the same time, in the end they give space and it all turns out wonderfully well!!! But Italians, feel they are the bosses of the roads and feel other drivers shouldn't be there (sorry Italians.... I love you but in general, driving in your country is a challenge)........
Yes put the ramps on. Get the chairs out, do a bbq no one will bother you. Just a shame about the terrible weather.
When it starts pulling turn the other way and keep doing it. Maybe practice by the lorry not whilst your walking. Or you can get the figure of eight lead x
Good idea, it's very hard to practice that whilst on a family walk x
From my experience you must keep your dog slightly behind you and only pull him back if he goes in front of you shout comands not to pull.
Thanks for the advice ⭐️
Malta 😮
22:52 no, that's just Mercedes, the rest are no better than you would expect
Winnats Pass is quite steep so it isn’t a great idea to do it in a 7.5 tonne lorry because you would most likely be in first gear all the way up.
Modern 7.5t lorries like this one can keep up with cars in most places.
I know, but I still wouldn’t do it because Winnats Pass is quite steep at the top.
Clean Up The World events will be held on the 3rd weekend in September. If there is not an organised event where you are on that weekend you can register as a family to take part
Activities can be family only or open to others to help with the litter clean up .
The theme for 2024 is plastic pollution.
The event was started by round the world yachtsman Ian Kiernan in 1989 when he returned to Australia.
You might like to pick up some litter analyse what you find then have a BBQ with other van lifers
To finish you could plant a tree or trees as trees are the lungs of the earth
Great ideaA
The worst driving I have EVER encountered is in Thailand. I have lived there on and off for many years and driven all over that beautiful, large country. But the driving is appalling. I have noticed the standard of driving dropping in England since around 2000. I have no idea why that would be.
We drove a tuk tuk round Sri Lanka...... They seem to have no rules. Seriously scary lol
Ahhh that sounds FUN!
I got to tell you, the drivers here in the USA are very aggressive!..tailgaters, speeding..😢your little puppy is adorable 😊
Mirrors in the hedgerows, you need mirror protectors .
May : It may rain, it may be cold, it may hail, it may be sunny, it may be windy, it may be sunny and warm.
My mother, a Scot, often used this quote "Ne'er cast a clout, till May is out"
@@motivate-todayI've heard this as far south as Essex & Oxfordshire although it's "cast ne'er a clout..." down here.
Don't drink and drive.... Even if it water... You can be charged with driving without due care/dangerous driving... 😊😊😊
🎉🎉🤗💕🇿🇦
Rick is it we are the worst drivers or your choice of vehicles lol know on to a serious note I was surprised you didn’t add another layer of fibre glass or covered the whole roof with a sheet of ally I hate to say I would have but life gos on
It's definitely not the "choice of vehicle", the family has selected a vehicle about a foot narrower & 25 feet shorter than an artic.
The roof seals were fine till the 'professionals' got at it!
Rich take up enough room on the road as you feel safe because the cars will soon move over, they don’t want to go head to head with a lorry 👍👍
That's not 100% reliable.
I was in Shepton Mallet a couple of years ago following a row of cars passing a single parked car. Coming the other way was a dustcart whose driver had obviously seen this before, he slowed to about 5mph & covered his face (presumably in case of flying glass). I stopped as you suggest but the entire queue in front of me chose the challenge, the last 2 cars nearly flipped over as they dodged round the lorry. Wheels left the ground.
Motorway junctions at peak times are the worst in the UK, nothing wrong with the roads its the drivers, people don't get into lane early enough and don't give way for the incoming traffic on the other side so it all becomes start stop carnage.
Edit: I live near to Buxton so I know the town quite well
I use to live nr Buxton as well ---- Newtown, New Mills
You guys in carlisle right now? Wife sure she just seen you parked on port road
try dublin
Totally agree, Italy is bad for driving and the further south you go, the worse it gets. Although it is more a case of ignorance , arrogance and lack of respect. But the rest of Europe is catching up as well.
Is there a financial penalty if you leave at 2am?
Agree, England, absolute nightmare to driving in, especially with these new big cars and trucks, people and their parking is even worse, taking up more space than they need and its just selfish.
Shame the weather was crap for you. .Dave completely agrees with Rik on uk drivers, and gets road rage ALLthe time! 🙈🤣
Haha 🤣 its quite entertaining for us passengers isn't it 🙈 x
Need. Harness …..
Easy Walk harness for Rosie and whoever is training her needs to pay attention to her behavior rather than just letting her pull.
Don’t think it’s the UK drivers they were probably saying look at this idiot a small road with a bloody big wagon, and, we take our caravan to France and have no problem because the roads are so much better than ours
Oh dear.
If there was a restriction on the road it would be clearly signed at every junction.
If there is no restriction there is no restriction, all vehicles are allowed & should be expected.
🤣🤣🤣
Is your truck 7.5 tonnes?
Yes ☺️
Wacky racers 🤣👊
When you train your pup use dog treats I swear by it good look
Wow not meany kids would do that do a litter pick fair play great kids
They think it's great, bit of a treasure hunt seeing what and how much they can find
@Touringwiththekids more kids should take a leaf from their book instead of what most kids end up doing these days
Belgians!
Before you call other drivers you should look at your self, the road in Buxton where you had a rant has a 7.5 wieght limit with access only this dos"nt mean it"s a short cut for you, also the winnets pass is 7.5 restriction, just saying
A limit is a limit, it's not a ban on anything that fits the limit. Do you *_ever_* drive at 30mph where 30mph is the limit?
Google Streetview shows Winnats Pass has a maximum for *_goods_* vehicles of 7.5t except for access.
The sign bears a glyph of a goods vehicle so it only relates to *__goods__* vehicles, as is clear from the Highway Code. Any *_goods_* vehicle less than 7.5000001 tonnes mgw is allowed up there & if the driver can cite "access" (eg _accessing_ the viewpoint) there is no limit for *_goods_* vehicles.
No weight limit is signed for other vehicles.
Could you supply the name of "the road in Buxton" so we can check for ourselves?
If you mean the road they turn into at 11:59 there is no limit shown.
The road in question is the Dukes drive, it dose"nt show the sign on the video but is clear on google street view. except for access only allows you if you are visiting a place within the restriction for deliveries etc. As for Winnets pass ive seen many failed attempts in smaller campers and cars,i think the city of london has different exemptions for 7.5t
@@user-pn1pg5re7sthanks for providing the road name but again the sign bears a *_goods_* vehicles glyph so _only_ applies to _goods_ vehicles not to motorhomes. If the restriction applied to all vehicles there would be no glyph, as is abundantly clear reading through the signs in the Highway Code.
Regardless of the vehicle classification this vehicle is below the indicated weight limit so would not be impacted by the restriction anyway.
The Americans when driving in their towns
What's all that clucking I can hear must be some chicken somewhere oh they are in the cave
🤣🤣🤣
Guys a working dog needs more training than a average pet I hate to state the ovious perhaps a cocker spaniel wasn’t the right choice I’m sorry you might take this in a negative way it’s not ment to be I’ve owned many breeds and working breeds turned out not to be best pets rescue dogs need homes
Agree there, iv always had working breeds even within a breed eg Labrador iv had from working stock not show, iv found them less problematic with health and as you say they take more training and effort but once trained it’s worth it. However if I lived in a waggon I’d not have a working breed they need time and exercise.
As a quick roof fix paint it with something like Acrypol fibre reinforced stuff, that works well for a number of years.
I think its early days to say we've made the wrong choice, she's just a pup 🙈
UK drivers are awful because they are distracted. On there's phones, having a conversation, looking at the scenery. I used to love driving now I hate it. Sit on the motorway with cruise control on at 70mph and you can tell it everyone else 😂😂
IM NEVER COMING BACK HERE AGAIN 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why do you always ask for comments and then don’t respond to them?
I previously asked about if Richard had a uk rod license and it was ignored.
We respond to most of our comments 👍
@@Touringwiththekids have you got a uk rod license?
Sad to hear you using bad language in the company of your children. Good and bad drivers everywhere.
Without doubt AmericA
