    Taylor also said in the long pond studio session that this song also reflects how the best you can do can seem like a failure to others. Especially for addicts or people who suffer from mental illnesses. So while it takes them everything they have to get to where they are - others still see it as miserable because they don't see how much it takes the person to even be at that point.
    By the way, I really love your reactions! I feel like you give attention to both the music and the lyrics. Other reaction channels focus too much on just one of the aspect in my opinion. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Germany

    It's so weird to me how these lyrics sites will still insist this is entirely about Taylor even after the Long Pond Sessions where she legit explains that it's just about someone struggling with addiction and people not understanding how hard it is to, 'get to a place that's still shitty' in the words of jack Antonoff.

    • @jerickson725
      @jerickson725 Pƙed 2 lety +4

      Correct. Taylor never struggled with addiction. I think it's a song for anyone struggling with anything (including addiction), or feeling like they are not living up to other's expectations of them.

    This song resonates so much with me in a multitude of ways.
    “My words shoot to kill when I’m mad. I have a lot of regrets about that”. I grew up with an incredibly verbally/mentally abusive family. They are very combative and defensive. In my growth as an adult I’ve really had to unlearn that behavior especially when having small tiffs with my boyfriend. (Afterglow also hits home with me).
    This song also takes me back to a time when I was with my abusive ex. I was at an all time struggle with my mental health trying to navigate the relationship I was having to endure and all that comes with new birth control. He was constantly telling me that I wasn’t getting better, I wasn’t doing the things I promised to or the things I said I wouldn’t. All he could see was me sleeping all day “being lazy” when I was trying so hard to function. Even getting out of bed to get a drink was draining some days. I was trying so hard and it was never enough. But at least I was trying.

    this song meant nothing to me first time i heard it, it was one of my least favorite, but then i listened to her talking about this song in the long pond studio and it absolutely hit me. When she says:
    "Pouring out my heart to a stranger
    But I didn't pour the whiskey"
    i imagine an alcoholic telling how he really messed up in his romantic life, maybe he trusted way too fast in someone he barely know and gave them his heart so anyone would look down on him, like he is being a mess, but he is telling that at least he didn't gave into alcohol, which is a HUGE thing for him. Like in anyone else it might be a simple and basic task but he has been REALLY trying and putting a lot of effort.
    She also talks about depression. The guy showing up at the door? showing up is not a big deal, showng up is the minimun. But for someone who really considered jumping off that cliff and ending everything right then and there, the fact that he resisted that urge and kept going on and being in that persons life (and being alive) is huge

      tbh thank you for that last one ❀ I always beated myself up that I didn't do enough, that I destroyed my life etc. But you are right that it's so hard to just get up from bed (if you can even manage that) and then think and listen other people how you are screwing everything and you have to do more and even just surviving is bigger task than you can do and you just want to kill yourself every damn day. It's really hard to get through and even harder to start over.

    Her line "Words shoot to kill when I'm mad" are Taylor at her finest. In song she lacerates the likes of Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Jake G, Scooter Braun, Kanye West, and Scott Borchetta, and they deserve it. But in Better Than Revenge she went too far, and imo that's the song she regrets penning. I would not be surprised if BTR is not on Speak Now (Taylor's Version).

    • @jankova0013
      @jankova0013 Pƙed 2 lety

      @@kosmikpixie why do we think that tho? because I don't see how it's worse than some other lines in the songs. When you're young there are girls that are know (especially among boys) "for the things that they do on the mattress" and they don't even have to do anything. They just think she sleeps with everyone or is great in bed or whatever and it is a rumor. So like I want to agree with you but at the same time from this pov it is not like a horrible thing (I mean it would be horrible to be known for that and that that is happening but like the line itself can just point to the rumor).

    • @kosmikpixie
      @kosmikpixie Pƙed 2 lety

      @@jankova0013 Whereas Taylor's other songs have devastatingly cutting lines and those lyrics are based on her own experience vis a vis those men, this awful line is based on rumour and innuendo. Gossip. That's the difference. In BTR Taylor fell into the trap of slut shaming, and we know how much she's come to hate slut shaming. She became the tabloids' slut shaming target and regrets doing in BTR would the media would come to do to her. To her, this was Karma and she was the recipient of Karma's justice.
