Fwiw, it looks like a badly done ADR thing (Auto Dialog Replacement). It's been around for a long time and it can be seen in the credits.
During post production, the actor goes into a darkened sound room and tries to repeat a perfectly synced word or words that didn't record well. Other times, a new line clarifying the story is added to an actor originally not speaking but facing away from the camera.
Prior probably thought it would be worth adding the line after seeing the final cut. Maybe they felt back in the analog years and without easily repeating views, it wouldn't be noticed.

Sure, the punch was fake (with no bloody nose!), but the way Pryor and Wilder played off each other in a way that brought the tension in the room to a breaking point (or diffused it?) was just hilarious. an interesting aspect is that Wilder said that he didn't actually like working with Pryor that much. I think it had to do w/Pryor being late to set a lot, doing a lot of drugs. They had great chemistry on film--but they weren't really tight off camera.

I loved it at the drive-in and no less now. Incredible comedy...Prior tries being cool and attempts to strike the Bluetip Match on His own teeth, then He even tries striking it in His own hair. Every attempt fails, until He finally gets a spark off the big, dark cowboy's chest. Folks, that's an epic sequence from a legendary film. 🎥
