  • Raph Koster has finally brought us a first look at his new MMORPG, Stars Reach. While these are just my initial thoughts, I have even more I'd like to express about Playable Worlds new game, but that's for another video. :)

    For those that don't know ReBoot is a Canadian animated television series created by Gavin Blair, Ian Pearson, Phil Mitchell, and John Grace, with the visuals designed by Brendan McCarthy after an initial attempt by Ian Gibson. It was produced by Vancouver-based Mainframe Entertainment, Alliance Distribution and BLT Productions; and originally aired on YTV from 1994 until 2001. It is notable for being one of the first made-for-television CGI series.

    > Something looks off about them.
    They got plastic looking skin, which is quite uncanny valley - but the biggest problem is probably that when they turn their heads, the eyes just smoothly turn with the head... and that's something a human can't really do... the eyes always stick to something and "jump". The animals running around have very choppy animations, and the dude walking just hast the weirdest gait ever...
    But the thing is... if you do judge a game by it's WIP, pre-alpha graphics - then this game probably is not for you anyway. Because this is never going to be a high-end graphics showcase that wows people with it's rendering tech. All their focus is on game systems, simulation, player-driven economies and player-driven ingame communities/societies... all things which are kinda hard to show in a short trailer.

      I'm just conditioned to many ambitious games launching in a state like that. I've seen Raph's statements of him saying the animations/models will be improved upon, which gives me hope. I would actually still play it if it launched looking like that. I mean, I'm still playing SWG after 21 years, so the systems involved have me very excited.
      My criticism is is how I feel about it, but it's also my worry that other people will be turned off by it and potentially miss out on a great game. I want Stars Reach to succeed A LOT.

    tbh all the footage is pre-alpha and usually the graphics is something that's mostly finished in late stages of the game development cycle, I'm safe to say that this game is 2-3 years away at least. so we'll see later on what it looks like.

      Just to name 1 game. Sure the graphical style may be the same but i doubt this is the final models already in at pre alpha. Most pre alpha games use placeholders to show of mechanics.

      That's it. Pre- alpha, and , i have been around the gaming industry long enough to know. Along with betas over the decades. Is, this is how it's gonna look pretty much for the final build. Just, gonna refine and enhance colors and textures, etc. Same, usually with game and PvE/Pvp stuff as well. With only minimal adjustments with /bugs. He, said he want to look forward from SWG, and games that were hits and successes. With, exception to how the Devs or Community Managers, really destroyed, such a great game like SWG. I am not worried about the Graphics because this is Pre-Alpha, most of the graphics and animations are prefab placeholders. And also the code is not optimized either. But the depth of the functionality is there and it sounds amazing.
    Graphics (Looks) will evolve tremendously as the game development progresses. Same with the Lag and stutter we see, as the code gets optimized the timing the synching and bandwidth in the cloud. :)

    The moment I saw this teaser video I could not believe it. They must have such a limited budget to work on this thing. I love how Raph is still a good dude and is always open to engage with community and former fans of SWG and UO because he knows that this is what brought him joy and success in life, so I cannot hate on the guy. But even when the graphics are supposedly placeholders... oh my does this look ragged. And I believe they are going way too far into this "everything is in a flux state" theme instead of trying to simulate something realistic. This is what made UO and SWG so great. They went and tried to recreate something logical in terms of socio economics, but this new thing looks like an attempt to play god more than anything. And the damn toon graphics... it just cannot be taken seriously. Looking at the number of views their teasers got, I doubt it will have a chance to even get to a release...

  • @Schimpanso-g
    @Schimpanso-g Před měsícem

    I like the idea of shaping environment, however there is a risk it will look much worse than predesigned worlds.There is/was a mmo called dual universe in developement that promised a lot of freedom as well, reshaping environment and building whatever you want including spaceships and futuristic cities but it failed as what could be built didn't have much purpose than being looked at. You could build the Millennium Falcon just to see it getting shot by borg cubes (simple cubes with thrusters and weapons) that were pvp meta. The lesson I'd draw from this is that the real difficulty isn't the building/creativity part but how to make it become functionaly meaningful to the game. As a dev you might dream of the endless possibilities you give to the player but from the player side you might ask: why would I do all this?
    I'd also have concerns about the peacefulness i.e. opt in pvp. In a sandbox environment pvp is good/natural way creating emergent gameplay, leading to dangerous situations that might cross your plans. A peaceful environment where you can avoid risks easily might become boring if you don't come up with something that can fill this gap that isn't pvp related.

  • @jeremyrichard2722
    @jeremyrichard2722 Před měsícem

    I will say while I get where the criticisms and the video is coming from, it did motivate me to sign up as a tester simply to see how seriously they are taking things or if this will go like every other attempt at MMORPG development.
    To give my take on the subject, it actually reminds me of a cross between "Star Wars Galaxies" and "Wildstar" the latter of which you can be forgiven for not having heard of now, though it was heavily hyped back in the day. I assume they went with this kind of style for two reasons.
    The first is simply that as WoW and Runescape proved, a stylized, cartoony style of artwork simply ages better than trying to go for a more realistic look. There is nothing wrong with planning for the long term, even if most games of this sort do die. I would have preferred something closer to say SWTOR than this, but perhaps they didn't want to do that because they were afraid it would be too similar.
    The second is these types of games are a massive magnet for those seeking adult entertainment and to have things operate as an adult virtual chat mode. Whether or not they actually insert sex animations, full nudity, and other things into the game, it's almost guaranteed that a lot of people are going to be "hot chatting" probably within the first 24 hours of operation. That kind of thing doesn't bother me, but the cartoony art style does tend to make this stuff when outed seem less scary and offensive to normies who aren't into that kind of thing. The cartoony style vs. the realistic style can be the difference between being seen as "scary" and "silly", and you can survive with the latter perception. Not to mention I notice furries all over this thing as opposed to the more Trek or Star Wars "Rubber Forehead" aliens, and I assume it's designed to draw in that micro community as they can be very dedicated to people who cater to this even if there are not many of them overall. Furries will whale massively, even for things that aren't that good overall, and many will even admit it. The cartoony style makes doing the animal features, fur, etc... easier. Not to mention as that whole subculture and fetish community (which can be different) started with cartoons and a lot of furries do tend to be creeped out if they portray things realistically. They more or less droll over anime cat girls, not having sex with Chewbacca.... and that description of it comes from a friend of mine who is a hard core furry, so I assume most won't be offended as it's simply extremely candid in terms of what most (but not all) are like. This is why many furry fetish games oftentimes have realistic human models and cartoony anthromorphs living side by side, as a sort of pornographic "Roger Rabbit" or the old movie "Cool World" for those who have even heard of that.
    I doubt many people have read this, but I don't think new MMOs need to reinvent the wheel, and "SWG" was always a fine game, and something people wished would come back at a serious level. It was killed by licensing and a new MMORPG with the same license... beyond a lot of mismanagement by Sony and them not getting their core player base. Something like this could tap into a lot of MMORPG players who dislike the way current games of the sort have gone, and want something more stable than say private servers in open world crafting games.
    I will also say that depending on how it's monetized, something like this is clever, as it has just the right elements due to drawing in the younger players who like the crafting stuff and thee fetish material it could open the doors to (and not just furry stuff), while also appealing to the older RPG play style favored by older gamers with deep pockets, many of whom will be pervs as well. While what I'm saying here, probably does sound like nightmare fuel to some people, realize it is a formula that could result in a long term money maker if juggled correctly. It's one of those games where they could do something like use a subscription service to keep the kids away from it (due to needing direct access to a credit card), which also means a smaller, but dedicated player base that will invest in expansions. I'm not saying I expect this to be an adult game, I expect it to be more like well... other games with that sort of community as a sideline, but planning ahead for that to happen. That is a guess as to why there are so many anthromorphs in the artwork as opposed to more traditional portrayals of aliens given the visual references to Star Wars and Star Trek.
    Either way, I am interested in seeing how it turns out. I just hope the devs realize it's very unlikely this could ever be "the next big thing". As a long term low to mid-range consistent money maker that could keep some people employed to keep developing for the same thing it could work however. It's sort of like how I told Funcom TWICE that their game plans were really good, but then I found out that both "Age Of Conan" (the MMO not the crafting game) and "Secret World" were intended to be these massive MMORPG blockbusters that were supposed to print money like the heavy hitters... and that was never going to happen, especially in the latter one. "Conan" had more potential for it initially when I was in Beta, but TSW could never be mainstream as most people just aren't smart enough to find some of it's missions (namely investigation ones) fun, and a lot of the plot stuff is behind them.... beyond other issues. The trick is to know your lane so to speak, and I am hoping the people doing this both realize this, and also understand exactly the types of people they are going to attract, and if they don't want to cater to that and turn on those sorts of people when the pressure starts they will wind up basically lighting piles of money on fire.

SWG is dead, Sandbox MMOs are dead. This is an attempt at cashing in on memberberries for a fast cash grab. i would not be surprised if the game was released on premium AAA prices to pay for the "cloud" computing (protip .. all mmos use some kind of cloud), and goes free 2 play 3 months later.
    if kosher proved anything in swg is that he will see another game do better and demand devs change the game to match that game screw the player base. as for the end of their "trailer video" lol stealing charcters from wildstar also.
