Romantic feelings, affairs, and unrequited love ultimately tore the band apart. And no amount of musical talent and success could keep them together very long. In this video, we dive into the stories of what happened between the members of The Mamas and The Papas that made it so hard for them to stay together beyond a few short years of recording and performing together. We talk about the affairs that Michelle and John Phillips engaged in, as well as the unrequited love that “Mama” Cass Elliot had for her bandmate, Denny Doherty.
These romantic liaisons and passions ignited feelings of jealousy and anger amongst the band, causing them to be unable to stay together past 1969. They had one more attempt at reuniting in the early ‘70s, but that was a total bust). The group was a beacon of musical talent who churned out hit after hit, making it all the sadder that they couldn’t get along well enough to keep doing so for years and years. We also get into the details of their third and fourth record recording sessions, and how, by that point, all of the potential romance in the group had fully turned into animosity. These are stories that are a must-know for any fans of this incredible rock group.

Love song mama papa song
They all sounded great together, but Cass actually had the best voice of them all ♥️
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. Which song is the most memorable for you?
@@FactsVerse I like all their songs, but I think Dream a Little Dream of Me is my favorite Cass song and Creeque Alley is my favorite group song ♥️
The very old saying stays true to this day , don't dip your pen in the company ink , business and pleasure combined is a recipe for disaster, they had many top 10 hits , they started out as folk music but saw the success of the Beatles and got on board with that sound, rip to the ones that passed especially talented Cass Eliot, if you've never heard their music give them a listen, it's amazing
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
The company ink 😂 that's a good ol fashioned one never heard it before..
@@countrymousejewelry yes I’m familiar with that saying . Grew up hearing it - I’m a Young Senior now 🐴
my dad, God rest his soul, he got me into The Mamas and the Papas. he had all their albums, and listened to them quite frequently. I was always wanting to borrow his The Mamas and The Papas records so I could listen to them on my record player. he let me, as I was very careful with them. fell in love with them... it was love at first listen. my favorite song is "Go Where You Wanna Go", but really, I love all of their songs! Mama Cass was my favorite... she truly had such a powerful, yet very melodic and very beautiful voice. I remember also having one of her solo records, had come across it at a Salvation Army. just as good as any The Mamas and the Papas records, but honestly even better! the record was Don't Call Me Mama Anymore, and her version of "My Love"....... just WOW!!! exceptionally mesmerizing!!!!! I absolutely love this woman, and her voice!!💕💕💕💕💕 pure, absolute beauty, through and through.
Thank you for sharing your life story. We're happy to know that you and your dad loved the group! May your dad find peace 🙏
I agree I still listen to them all the time - it Just Takes me back to a state of tranquility
Growing up in the 60's, The Mamas & The Papas were up there as one of my favourite bands. Still love their music today🎶💕 I was blissfully unaware of all their dramas back then so much of this information came as a surprise to me. I thank them and bless them all for their music...loved them and the whole Hippy Era. Thankyou for the memories💕🎶🌱🙏🕊🙏🌱
I wish it was still the 70s and 80s myself
Beautiful words, thank you for your message for the Mamas and the Papas! If we may ask, which of their songs appealed to you the most?
@@gofishingwhenyoucan me too !
Mamas and the papas were icons in the music industry! It's sad to think all that talent was wasted by drama in their personal relationships! I think if it wasn't for that they would have gone on forever ! California Dream'n was my all time favorite song ! It was my son's favorite too! We actually played it at his funeral last year so it will always hold a special place in my heart ! ❤️ Barb
Couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing your views on this. Which of their songs appealed to you the most?
Aww so sorry for your loss.. ❤️
So sorry for your loss
Mamma Cass has a great voice!
mesmerizingly beautiful! her solo albums were pure epic!
Her daughter seemed to have inherited the vocal talents as well!

Yes AWSOME
Michelle Phillips' replacement was Jill Gibson, a model who was the longtime partner of Jan Berry, from Jan & Dean. Eventually, after Berry's near-fatal car accident, they split up.
6:19 right on Mama Cass rocking at James Brown fancy footwork that's pretty fucking cool
The Mamas and the Papas was magnificent. Their albums and songs are timeless. Dream A Little Dream and Monday, Monday are favorites. They was a great group.

Just bought mama Cass debut vinyl original press. She was a true talent through and through.
They are a great band and great harmony wish I got to see them in concert before they passed away
Hello how are you doing?
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. Which of their songs appealed to you the most?
I can't believe Michelle's the only one left. I'm only 33 and didn't even grow up when they were popular and sad for their passing
All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey! A simple but sublime lyric that automatically contours up a bleak autumnal day. Or fall as the Americans call it. Mamas and Papas were most definitely up their with the greats of that era. The Abba of their day.
Denny's voice on those lyrics was sublime.
We call it fall or autumn.
Love all their songs. It's said that there was so much contention between them although I was not aware of it at that time.
Glad to know that you love the group! Which of their songs is the most memorable for you?
@@FactsVerse loved them since I was a child, 67 now!
Michelle turns up sometimes on daughter Chynna’s CZcams channel. And Chynna’s daughter looks exactly like Michelle did when she was young.
She must be absolutely gorgeous!
My favorite Mamas and Papas song was Creque Alley.
One of our favorites too! Which song comes in at second place?
Describing their music as "Pop" is very strange. At the time, it was "Folk-Rock". Would anyone really call it Pop now? The "West Coast Sound" was the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean, not the Mamas and the Papas.
Thank you for getting me caught up on all the stories and rumours.
It was interesting to try to figure out all the 60s musicians in your film clips that were not the Mamas and the Papas. Some very good clips there.
Favorite song was definitely, "Dream a Little Dream." I think their time as a band "ran it's course" and ended when it should have ended. Business and pleasure never mix well together. They were good for their era.
One of our favorites too! Thank you for sharing this. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
I agree- it always RUINE’s a business & Friendships - - 🙃🙃🙃
@jimmysapien9961 Yes, and that's exactly why I decided against forming a band with family members. So glad I stuck to my guns.
You've done it again!! First Marion Lorne, now my #1 all-time favourite 60's rock group! You've read my mind again....totally mindblown! Thanks handsome Tim and the rest of your crew! 😊❤

Ahhh..... California Dreaming. I sing Monday Monday to myself every Monday. 😂 Love them!!
I really like Michelle on Knots Landing. She has aged well. Cannot even imagine how huge of an artist Class Elliott would have become.

Suzy Phillips-January (John's ex wife and Mackenzie's mother) sure had a lot of bitterness in her in some interviews over the years! She even once said she had him "served with papers backstage at the Monterey Music Festival! Sheesh!
California dreaming is my favorite. A great hit

I wonder what would have happened without the affairs, drinking and drugs. Thank you for sharing this. It was interesting. I find it sad because I really liked their music & instrumentation.
We're thinking the same way, the might have been. Thanks for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed this video. What other types of video would you like to see?
Most of their music wouldn’t have been made. That was the Catch 22 of the group - the affairs killed the group, BUT without the affairs/dramas, most of their songs would never have been written.

Greetings form Naples, Florida. We have heard these stories before. They were a talented group with some great songs.
I love there songs from like Monday Monday and California dreaming
Consider that John Philips had three daughters---Bijou, Chyna and McKenzie---by three different wives and you see how seriously this man took marriage and fatherhood. McKenzie claims that not only did her father force her into an incestuous relationship but she aborted his child. I give him credit for writing "If You're Going to San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" then giving it to Scott McKenzie, whom he renamed after his daughter, to sing.
I'm not into their music and would throw out any music I had from them after I heard what he did to McKenzie. Got no use for him. Sicko. Glad he is no longer on this earth and I hope God gave McKenzie the justice she deserves. Hope he is burning.
@@sal1665 Bill Cosby did some pretty nasty things in his later years, but back in the 1960s and '70s he was the funniest standup comic in the business. If we only patronized art and music made by nice people, there wouldn't be much art or music at all.
@@scotpens Agree. It's pretty hard to find anyone who stays innocent when money and celebrity come into their life.
Pop groups have their time and that's pretty much it.

Creeque Alley is one of the best songs to come out of that era and it wouldn't be the same if sung by any other group.
I totally agree with you there, great song
I remember them loved them so there were affairs
Knew John before died! He was a patient at the Home Health agency I worked for! He called one day, didn’t know he was a patient, he says “ this is John Phillips, Do you know who I am??? I said yes and started singing in my so untuned voice Monday, Monday! He laughed! After that when he would call we always chatted. As I always sound young! He died not too long after that! But he was always so sweet and call me by my name!
Excellent 👍👍

I do think they would have gone longer if they had not mixed the couples, you know what I mean. They all had talent.
Cool shot of Terri Garr! (Hullabaloo or Shindig?)
Monday, Monday is a great song. I read Mackenzie's book. Very tragic story all around.
Yeah I read Mackenzie memoir a few years ago

It was called "Free Love" then !!
Sorry for all the trouble the group members got into. But boy did they bring some great music to our collective ears. Can't pick a favorite song by them, because as soon as i decide on one another equally favored song pops up in my mind.

Great bands find their own level in History, The Mamas and Papas will always be at the top.
I always liked the momma's and the papas music
Glad to know that you're a fan! Which of their songs appealed to you the most?
Drugs would have took them away. My fave band when I was a pre teen. Love their music.
If youve never heard gene clark sing " tried so hard", its about the affair. I cant help but think that alot of his sad songs were at that time about michelle, i guess they were supposed to go away together, and she backed out at the last moment. Idk if he ever really got over it, judging by his music.
I really loved their music! All of their songs! It's too bad about their morals, because that and their drug use, 😔 is definitely what broke them up! I di like watching Chynna's Phillips-Baldwin on her blog California Preaching.
We're happy to know that you love The Mamas and the Papas. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which of their songs appealed to you the most?
Always enjoy their music. Too bad drugs alcohol and illicit carrying one ruined it for them and everyone else. It takes off the shine.

John Phillips disliked Cass Elliott due to her size. So sad for Cass. She deserved better.
Yeah cass didn't deserve to be treated like that

"Monday, Monday", "Creeque Alley" and "I Saw Her, Again".

one of the affairs being with their daughter

California dreamin'! About staying together? I don't know!
sounds similar to fleetwood macs story

What role did dieting play in Cass Elliot's death?
She apparently tried to lose weight too quickly and had a heart attack.
How old is Michele today?
She's 78 years old
Read Johns book Papa John, he was also having 3 ways with J. Fonda.
Success ruins people. They were too young to appreciate the significance of their achievements.

I’m shocked that Dorety did not want Cass but wanted married Michelle. This was not a band but a group.
Mama Cass was so OBESE! You know good and well Denny Doherty didn't fancy her.
Are you kidding? I can't see ANYBODY choosing Cass over Michelle. Don't mess with married women, never have, never will. They have to be single women for me to be with them. But still......Cass? Please!
Also torn apart by terrible drug use . The romance and affairs is bull. The time of age was all free love ,drug use , and abusing themselves . This was hippyville ,very different time .
Yeah, pretty much every excess was indulged. I wonder if they ever learned that bad choices have consequences.
They got tired of each other sex and company
double standards.! 🤔
I am I the first one?
Who cares if you are first!
🤔 First really?. As Darth Vader from Star 🌟Wars would say. The force is weak with this one......
Actually, I think we watched it first ;)

🤔 7th? So you can count then. You must have been the top of your class at school.....

Love the Mamas and Papas. Favorite song Creque Alley/Dancing in the Street. Too bad they allowed all that BS to ruin their music. As far as Mackenzie goes, a my dad was wonderful book would not have sold so she may have lied to increase sales. I think she did.

Michelle was a real loose lady. And being so attractive, that was bound to cause trouble. She had no trouble shacking up with whoever she wanted. Her interviews later in life revealed that she still has no second thoughts about being so loose. Never was much of a lady, only looks.
She wanted to share her goods! 🙂
The late 60s was the time of "free love", at least that was the hippie ideal.

They were the Fleetwood Mac of their time. Overrated, and milked their internal drama so hard the birthed Taylor Swift by proxy.
