- Two watches. Two incredibly similar watches. They share so much alike that they are almost one and the same, dive watches on bracelets accented with the colour blue. Yet, somehow, they couldn’t be more different. They are chalk and cheese, and each one very much has its place. Let’s find out why.

I'm 50 years old and I remember as a boy coveting the Sub 1680 with its top hat crystal. The whole design seemed so smooth, like a polished pebble, and the very shallow rehaut made the face stand out, but uniform with the lines of the case. The newer subs seem squarer, the face deep-set like the old fakes used to be, and too shiny. As soon as I could, I bought a 1680 single red of 1971 vintage. I love it. As a daily, I bought a BB58 in blue; there is so much in common with the 1680, and of course the old French Navy sub that I also loved. Great video!
Does it have the exterior spring pin holes in the case?
@@TucsonDude The 1680 does have the exterior holes in the case. It was designed as a tool watch, and the holes make it easy to change the bracelet.
@@jonathanharris2558 Agreed. I don't see why Rolex considered it an upgrade to remove the exterior holes. I like your term calling it a "tool watch". Remember the NATO strap like James Bond wore on his?
What is your opinion on the black bay 54?
@@A5_AD I haven't tried the BB54 TBH, but I guess having the choice of sizes to suit your wrist size is great. Being a child of the 70's I never really bought into the whole big watch thing, and I'm glad that the trend seems to be shifting towards subtlety nowadays. It's probably why I never really liked modern subs...too shiny and too bulky.
I'm a small business owner that works with other small businesses. Rolex has become something that sends the wrong message, and attracts violent attention to boot. Tudor, Omega, Breitling etc. all deliver enjoyment and a touch of class without being gaudy.
Same here, small EU business owner, the Rolex sends definitely the wrong message. Depending on the client, I'm wearing a Cartier Tank, a Tudor North Flag, a Sinn 556 mop S, or a Seiko Alpinist, but definitely never a Rolex, people would be starring at it and eventually question my incomes. If those watches are probably good for top business, they are counter productive at my modest level.
Same here (France) . Depending on the customer I visit I will pick one brand or another, but sure rolex would send the wrong message, which is strange when you think about it, my 14060 costed me less than my cartier santos I just got, but the Santos blends much better and doesn't attack that much attention
I see your point and it is valid. But important to note that Rolex makes better watches than almost everyone in that RRP price range. The issue is the hype and the grey market prices, which I do believe is not entirely Rolex’s fault.
But I do agree with your point. I have a rolex Pepsi, but also two BB58s. I find if I want to be more relatable, wear a nice watch, but not attract attention. Then I almost always wear my Tudor’s or Omega.
I don’t think I will buy another rolex ever again, but I will keep mine until it’s ready to be passed down.
@@avarmauk Fact 1: Rolex at RPP is a wet dream. Fact 2: within their rpp price range Omega and JLC make technically superior watches. Fact 3: Rolex is not a high-horology brand and has not contributed to horology with anything significant.
Attracts attention cuz it’s the supreme watch.
As the owner of both watches, I can honestly say I’d choose the BB58 if forced to keep only one. There’s just something unpretentious yet supremely elegant about the Tudor. Whereas I always feel somewhat apologetic when wearing the Rolex.
I agree, I would love to own one...but even $4000 is too much for me unfortunately.
@@drgeek100you can find the Tudor for just over 3k, bought mine for $3033
Do you miss not having a Date on the BB58 ?
@@tonyga5 Good question. Being honest….yes, sometimes I do miss a date complication. As much as a date window messes up the symmetry of a dial, it is useful.
You ain't got both 😂
I have a Submariner Hulk and this BB58 blue, and love them both. And for different reasons. The BB does remind you of a time long past. No one asks me if it’s real. No one says “nice watch”…only I know it a nice watch. And I’m great with that.
I work in a mountain equipment store and a customer came in wearing a Tudor. I said btw nice Tudor man. He let me try it on :) I didn’t even ask. That was awesome
@@KevAlberta awesome. I have had a few “watch people” notice it and comment. But not your normal person on the street….
The Hulk is my dream watch. I managed to get many different Rolex sports models at retail, but never the Hulk.
@@redcapote4760 a nice story- it took me 8 years to get to a bonus level at work, that allowed me to get it. I ordered it from an AD, and in 10 months they called and said it was in. The AD told me that I wasn’t the next customer in line for it, but whoever was, when they found out it was my bonus, and my first Rolex ever, that other customer told the AD that I could take that one, and they’d wait for the next. I thought that was awesome.
I love the BB58 for the same, doesn't attract too much attention but I still know it's got killer specs and superb comfort. I just don't like the way a Rolex changes people's behavior towards you - in either positive or negative direction. For me watches are not status symbols but brilliant pieces of engineering.
Such a deep and wonderful message in such a simple and plain way. I enjoyed every video you made and even more the stories behind every one of them. Thank you.
I enjoy listening to these reviews. Nit only is it a feast for the eyes, but also a symphony for the ears. My compliments to whoever writes the script, it is a well done piece of fine art.
Yeah I have a bromance with his voice too🤣
"Nit only"?
He is talking about watches like he is going to do something inappropriate with them after the video is done. :D
@@astonmartin4360 hahaha…fat fingers small phone keyboard🤣😂🤣
It's a real damn shame the sound quality is so poor though. The script is indeed excellent. I am astounded that they're letting this slide and i will keep on complaining until something changes :P.
Tudor offers the craftsmenship along with accessibility. Sure I'd love a subby, wouldn't most watch enthusiasts.. But i still smile when looking at the Black bb58 on my wrist after 2 years of daily wearing.
"subby"? 😂
@@seveninchwrist2742 you’ve obviously had a bad day my friend, so I’m glad I was able to provide you with some amusement! Have a great weekend 🤙🏼

I have lost count of the watches I’ve bought and sold through Watchfinder. Each time the experience is superb; personal, friendly and professional. That they provide that level of service, AND produce these videos, is just a remarkable achievement. Love this channel, and really enjoyed THAT Scottish Watches podcast too. 😁
I’d go with the Tudor, but not this version. The original one with the black gilt dial and red bezel triangle. Love that watch!
Its a cracking watch! Snowflake fridays!!!
yea..but the hands look way cooler on the Rolex
That’s by far my favorite version of this watch
I’m selfish and wear it (gilt version) on the wrist palm side to keep each cuff unveiling to myself.
@@rho58 greedy. I like it!!!
Both are an evolution from the original submariner, diverging to focus on different consumers. The white gold sub as a obvious modern luxury watch and the BB58 the go to watch for the enthusiasts with a taste for vintage pieces. That being said both are beautiful watches and I would own both if I could.
Still the best watch channel out there. Love this guys knowledge, presentation, footage and voice
As someone who can afford neither, I enjoyed the pretty images but I'm happy with my Citizen Tough.
You, as often do, hit the nail right on the head. I love my Speedmaster and prefer manual movments precisely because those 30 seconds i spend winding it feel like meditation and look for that feeling with many things a do and own.
Excellent video, pure class. The only thing better the design of the BB58 is a classic Tudor Submariner, blue and with snow flags. Love the blue version.
I LOVE that grinding feeling when I screw back my crown and forcing it to make new threads!
nice vid. ive seen this comparison afew times before... but i always think the regular black bay would be a closer comparison (since it has a black dial and blue bezel)
What a great video! Poetry combined with fantastic macro-shots. Could have watched and listened forever. Thank you!
PS: BB58 all the way!:)
Thanks for the great videos. Question: what Camera and lens do you use for the close up views. Thanks a lot in advance.
I'm really into watches for 2 years now. This BB58 is my accessible grail. It will be mine one day. It is so simple, so clean, thin, but with great specs. That is really what I enjoy watches. No date is a really plus for me too. Thank you for this poetic video!
Another masterfully put together work of art. Yes, your videos are works of art thanks to your perfectly worded narrations.
I just love your writing Andrew, knowledge, personality, wit, insight and so much more,
Awesome content. Thanks
You nailed it! Love both and they are different.
Very well written video. Well done
The writing style is amazing, the comparasion of mechanical watches to paper books is absolutely superb.
Of both watches the tudor is definitely the one i would wear the most.
Beautiful photography and enchanting narration as always.

I own this BB58 and couldn't be happier with it. For me it means having top performance and quality without the bling factor. It's still a marvel of engineering an I believe it's a bit of a bargain at that. It's also a really handsome watch with its subdued navy blue, matte dial, clean looks. It's so comfortable to wear as well, I've literally forgotten my other watches and been wearing this for the last 6 months every single day.
Awesome video as always, happy to see you are again doing these magnificent comparisons that makes every watch collector think more about horology.
Submariner then: kept you from dying
Submariner today: keeps you from diving
They certainly accomplished a lot more with a lot less back then.

To take a moment to reset and recollect for that 1 minute is so valuable to me it's hard to describe. Simple things at their core are what I enjoy 😉
I have the Sub 114060 and the BB58 Blue. I would not part with either. I absolutely love both for many different reasons. The Tudor quality is far beyond the price charged.
I love being in the moment :) these videos do a good job of feeling present
To the speaker, you possess a voice that lasts a soothing effect on the listener, videography is very calming as well, with every video I watch of yours, I truly feel honoured to be subscribed to your channel.
Nothing beats playing a LP, a relaxing experience. Now the Sub at $40k v the Tudor at $4k, Tudor wins hands down.
Hands at ten and two, surely.
The originale Tudor black bay with the ETA movement is the perfect dimmensions in my book. But with the release of the BB58 some of us may hope that the standard BB gets down to between 12 and 13 mm thickness.
What an absolutely WONDERFUL and true review…thank you
You pretty much nailed it. In a way I'm pretty much in the middle of this equation with my Rolex 41 LN and my Tudor Pelagos. One flashy and in your face the other large warm and well just there to tell me the time.
I can't buy a watch without the date... Excellent video quality. Very good.
It’s a bit late in the day for me but I’ve changed my lifetime hobby,ie watches, most of my adult life I have spent acquiring, flipping, swapping, coveting mainly Rolex watches, then constantly worrying about scratching them, losing them, having them stolen, getting mugged etc.I have sold my entire collection over the past couple of years (15) mainly because I really dislike what Rolex has become as a brand, the whole “investment “ bullshit thing and the never ending crap on social media about this brand.Bought a G Shock Mudmaster for £600 and that’s it,free at last, one of the best things I have ever done especially seeing what the luxury watch market has become today.
Wait a minute... @4:36 the Rolex logo inside does not line up with 12 marker???!
Could you make the same comparison between a Blancpain FF and a Squale?
Excellent video, like this style rather than the new one. Anyway, please review IWC Ingenieur IW3239 next time 🙏🏻
I have had both, my daily wear is the Tudor. The Tudor is still the best deal in luxury watches going and after several years wearing every day, never babying it, gym, beach, etc, it looks almost new. I have to admit, I do like the looks of the newest version of the Sub and the SS version without date window well under 10K, still a value for such a high quality watch that will hold good value.
Still have my Rolex submariner from the early 1980’s and running great again after recent service 😉 love the vintage ones more !
Where did you get your Submariner servjiced?
5 digit sub is my favourite, & love any Tudor.
Just love the simplicity and the efficiency of the Tudor !!
Both of these watches do have a place in my collection. Would love to have them both. They're very similar and very different at the same time. You hit the nail on the head... The Rolex wears more like a jewelry
Back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, I was really into the watch thing. I had five Rolex models during that period including a stainless Sub and a two-tone in blue. My interests changed and I had an Explorer II with a white dial. I sold it to a friend for a song and then I unfortunately looked up what they were selling for these days. I did this after the fact…. This was a very painful experience. Recently, I got back into collecting watches and decided I would put myself on the waiting list at my local AD. While in the store I looked at a BB Heritage with a burgundy bezel. That evening, I couldn’t get the BB out of my mind. The next day, I went in and purchased it. I absolutely love this watch! It wears perfectly on my wrist and keeps near perfect time. Ironically, I sold that Explorer II to help pay for some tube amplifiers. I also listen to vinyl records almost every day. And yes, I am still on the waiting list for a Rolex…..
The BB58 doesn’t come with burgundy bezel. That bezel is exclusively of the Black Bay Heritage, the original 41mm version. If that’s the one you got, let me tell you, that’s the one to have!!! 👌
@@Roberto68n - My mistake….
I've never understood watch companies' pricing of gold watches. A gold watch has about 75g or 2.5 troy ounces of gold in it. At $1800/oz that is $4.5k of gold. And the watch costs $30k-ish more than the steel equivalent? So you pay 7x the market value of gold? Where is the appeal in that?
Always an wonderful text for narration
My first Rolex was a Submariner. It is such a beautiful watch. I had the opportunity to see this one. That blue bezel looks gorgeous. I had a Tudor BBB 41mm. Very nice watch, but I would not trade a Submariner or a Seamaster 300M for one even if they were at the same price.
The lightning might be weird because the Tudor dial looks insane when it is a normal nice blue and the Rolex bezel look a nice blue when it in a horrendous purpulish electric blue
Loved the video (as always).
Just one thing, as the owner of a Black Bay 41 with a Black face and Blue dial, wouldn't this have made a more suitable watch to use for this comparison?
As for the Rolex used in this video, at the price quoted wearers would surely want a private body guard to safely wear the watch outside!
The black bay 58 is much improved, so I'm sure that's why it was chosen to put against the Rolex.
I agree I have the new in house BB 41 and I am tired of the fan boy hype of the 58, I think for a Diver it wears far too small. Good to see prices are now on a par with the BB41. I reckon the 41 will be the one in the future there will be less about and in more demand, especially as it was the supposed underdog thanks to CZcams fan boi's.
The Black Bay 41 is too thick to be the proper comparison. For most people the BB58 is a better fit on the wrist. For those with larger wrists then the 41 is a good option.
The art of watchmaking countered with the art of words, great listening!!

I've had the Black Bay blue bezel 41mm for 18 months, the accuracy is +/- 2 seconds a week consistently. I just couldn't be bothered to wait 3-5 years for a Sub.
+/- 2 seconds a week or a day
The Tudor BB58 is most perfect watch and for a great price. I bought mine when it first came out and haven't looked back. I would love a Sub but not at the crazy prices they selling for now.
I can only think of 2 reasons to buy a Rolex. 1) Because I want a Rolex. 2) Because I want people to see I have a Rolex.
There are so many other watches just as good for less, there's literally no rational reason to buy one.
There's really no rational reason to buy a watch at all. We all have smart phones that will always tell more accurate time than these archaic machines. With that being said, we still buy them anyways haha
@@FrostBlackbird See thats not good thinking and I dont mean to be rude when saying it. However how many times have you ran out of battery on your phone? Or when it simply stops working or has issues etc. The watch is sustainable, requires no previous enegery cost than the one used for its manifacturing. It runs on kinetic energy and wont fail your because the battery is low or dead.
I've had the chance to down both (normal rolex sub) and I picked the BB58. There are so many great watches like you said. Omega for example worth a fraction of the price with arguably mor inovative complications and materials used such as ceramic dials done with lazer and for less. Right now rolex is a status symbol and as such is prices are unreal.
And then when people see you wearing it a nasty chav beats your head in and steals it 🤦🏻♂️ the joy of Rolex 😬
It honestly depends, the Explorer 214270 is my daily and i also have a BB58. Both are under the radar watches and equally worn by me. Nobody cares or realizes im wearing a Rolex (neither I want to, if I did id buy a blue DJ with fluted bezel)
Min 07:20 isn’t the super luminova green on the BB58?
Why it looks blue in this video?
I knew that only the Pelagos has it blue.
The Tudor intro was so beautifully written. Bravo.
Interesting to see the BB58 lume is blue. Mine is green and sometime blue as well.
I love the bb58 series. I have some old Rolex subs from before crown guards, and love them- but they are 60 plus years old. These are great, sized and priced right, with modern tech. I love them.
Would you trust those old subs underwater?
@@TucsonDude only after new seals and pressure test.
@@rcm4u2 Nice! I'm glad to hear it's still water resistant.
I’d go with the Tudor all the way. At least it’s available when you want to buy it, but I have to admit grudgingly that the Rolex has more visual impact, if you like that sort of thing...
I own the black gold accented BB58 it’s warm tones and red pip are perfect . I do have to admit though that this featured Rolex is plainly a work of art if I had 40k laying around to burn I would get it!

Being able to buy pretty much any watch after working hard / investing early from 18 now 50 but there is something very satisfying about buying less expensive pieces and enjoying them just the same even more , just got a new Mini Tuna Seiko and it has to be one of the best watches on the market under 1000. ps love the channel !!
Am fortunate to own both the blue & OG BB58. Adore them both. 2 completely different looks. I’m also ‘on list’ for a Submariner (no date), NOT to replace the Tudors, but to sit alongside: Vintage & modern across various colour combinations covered - what more is needed for a perfect diver trio set!? In that sense, I guess I’m proof you can like them both!! :-)
Normally on the submariner cyclops, the antireflective coating has a colorless tint. And fakes are usually spotted by the color of the tint in the antireflective coating. However this model must use different antireflective coating than usual. Can you look into that?
You should have compared the blue bezel Submariner with black dial to the Tudor heritage black bay 41mm with blue bezel (also with black dial). That is the exact one-to-one comparison.

hi @watchfinder, can you review casio f91w
BB 41 in red is the favourite in my collection, would love a sub but can't justify the exorbitant price . The sweet spot for me is the $5000 dollar range of watches .
Is agree with you, they are different watches. Great video as always
Going to turn off my phone for a few hours - cheers
I have a Sub (not the £40K variety and a BB etc etc) the Sub is almost unwearable on a daily basis given it's value and issues this can cause, the BB gets some wrist time and I agree it is a well made beautiful watch.....I recently bought a Seiko SRPD71K1 suits; the blue/cream one you featured in your recent videos and have had far more 'enjoyment' and 'value' not to mention wrist time from it.
Beautifully told and encapsulates the essence of true watch ownership. I think we all secretly yearn for the simpler times of yesteryear and a watch can remind us if that on a daily basis. Great video 👍👍

@@davidb5720 hi me up on WhatsApp
As an owner of the Tudor BB 58 Blue, I can say without a doubt it looks immensely more beautiful in person than it does in this video, stacked against the Rolex. I live in San Diego and tried every AD in the county and it wasn’t until my current visit to NYC, was I able to find this gem of a watch. It’s becoming ever more rare, especially on the bracelet. Would I love to source a Rolex at retail? You bet but I’m more than happy with the BB58. It is a must for any watch collector who has the coin to purchase an amazing everyday watch. Great review! Keep the spectacular content coming
always poetic..love it
I honestly preferred the look and size of the Tudor. The Rolex looks too bling and the text on the rehaut ring looks naff. Especially when it’s not straight like this one. Old Rolex’s look cool but the new ones are just currency for people who talk about money and values. It’s not a watch enthusiasts brand anymore unfortunately.
I have to disagree slightly. I think what makes Rolex unique is that they still make tool watches that are usable as they are designed. I have an 114060 Sub, and the new Seamaster. The Seamaster is very nice, but the fit, finish, feel, and function, is definitely below my Sub. The bezel on the Seamaster has very shallow scallops which make it hard to use. The Sub has sharp edges that bite into your fingers. The bracelet on the sub is narrow and comfortable. The Seamaster is wide and bulky. I realize no one is wearing these as actual dive watches anymore but at least the Rolex can still do it. It is unfortunate that most people only care about the name, and don’t care about the small details that make a Rolex special.
@@wheel1775 Most divers I know (myself included) use dive computers. I only wear an old SKX as back up, if at all. Last time I saw a sub in the water, was in the pool whilst holidaying in Antigua 🤷♂️. A tool watch, yes. Unfortunately not used as one anymore.
Agreed, the rehaut text repetition is incredibly naff. Plus it didn’t look like it lined up correctly at 12, see 2:15.
I think someone upstairs has gotten a bit desensitized as to how much $40,000 is to commoners.
The Rolex is for investors and the Tudor is for watch enthusiasts
Both are stunning in blue!
If I could walk into a Rolex AD and buy a Sub, I would probably do it. But that seems unlikely to happen any time soon. And I refuse to pay gray market prices on one.
All of that being said, I bought the black BB58 and it has quickly become my favorite watch. It is extremely comfortable. Looks amazing. I enjoy it and that is all that really matters. I bought it for me to enjoy, not for the rest of the world. And I hope to be able to add the blue one soon.
Keep up the great work on the videos.

I just got my Black Bay Blue in 41 mm and this watch is absolutely amazing.
Saving for the 36mm Oyster Perpetual... and I will treat it as a watch.. use it in any situation and not worry about Value or scratches
Love the black Bay Blue! Hopefully my next purchase!
why is the blue face of the tudor look so faded and teal rather than a darker blue? i have this tudor bb58 and the colors not even close. (purchased from ben jewler in seattle)
Poetry and perfection. Bravo 💙
I have too many dive watches…..yet I have a hankering for the BB 58 blue
I love my 116619LB but the value of these WG subs has now got so out of control that I no longer wear mine. Its just not worth the risk even with it insured. It is a special watch but social media and speculation has dented its ability to be worn as a daily. The other factor most people will never have to contend with is WG is very soft so it scratches quite easily.
Give me the Tudor any day!
That Rolex sure is nice, but I will still choose the Tudor. #OneMinuteGang
Couldn't of said it better myself. The Tudor BB is so simple but beautiful. And the LB reminds me of back in the day being on the Rolex forums and seeing blue bezels being put in 16610LN & LV we called it the shark. Still love the look and it looks good on the new 41mm LB. Keep the Awesome content up as always
The BB58 in blue is the only non Omega I own and I absolutely love it. £2760 on bracelet two years ago. Great size too. No interest in owning a Rolex although Rolex owners and enthusiasts will no doubt disagree. Great video of a great watch and a not-so-great status symbol.
I was looking at a Rolex. I decided on a blue bb58 and a Grand Seiko sbge257 gmt, and I don’t regret it a bit!
Agreed. It’s the old silk purse from a sow’s ear thing for me. It’s still a big, clunky Submariner. I’d buy a BB or, better still, a Seamaster for swimming/diving and a white- /Canopus-gold Speedmaster for the chronograph/chronometer, elegance, style and the sheer, glowing beauty.
Sure guys…. Sure you would swap the bb for a sub if prices weren’t what they are.
