20. Sailing Hvar and the Pakleni Islands | Sail Croatia | sailing around the world

- This week we leave Scedro and sail towards the Pakleni Islands in Croatia, where we enjoy a peaceful and beautiful anchorage before heading to the buzzing Hvar town on the island of Hvar.
We are able to anchor just outside the town centre and re-stock Kawai with water, diesel and food before we get to enjoy our time in Hvar town. We visit the Spanish Castle, soak up the buzzing atmosphere and eat some pizza.
After spending a night in the Hvar anchorage we shelter from some strong winds in a calm anchorage just outside the main town. The winds improve and it's time to leave and we sail to the island of Brac to pick up Jase's parents.
About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean.

Yes I really liked the Pakleni Islands, saying that most of the Islands were beautiful, so much to see in Croatia, need another season there to see Northern Croatia. Glad you enjoyed the video!

By the way, I was going to suggest including life on Kawaii in addition to the amazing scenery. Pulling anchor, cooking and what you normally eat, maintenance etc. interested in seeing what it takes to run the yacht when I decide to do the same

5 months of water conservation..? Time to invest in that water-maker guys..! ;-).
Firstly, I hope you're safe and healthy; I believe you're currently back in Oz while Kawai is on the hard in Turkey. That's got to be tough to take after getting settled into the live-abroad life. I've only recently found your channel, the algorithm served me your review of the Torqeedo, and since then I've been binge-watching your back catalog. It was great to come across people that are obviously and naturally happy with life and are making to most of it. Looks like you're living the dream; certainly, it's our dream, and we're gradually working our way towards transitioning from being land-locked to permanently sailing the Med. We relocated from Oz to the UK twenty years ago, primarily for the ease of travel through the northern hemisphere, but also with the end-game being to retire to the Med. Brexit and the loss of EU residency rights have put something of a spanner in the works, but we'll figure something out. Right now we're having to make do with annual bareboat charters - next month it's Sardinia - and we've sailed some of the places you've featured so far, plus Malta, Sicily/the Aeolians, the Balearics, and the Canaries. We are already planning the Cyclades for next summer and so your videos from there were particularly interesting.
I loved your "special" on beach cleaning. It's also a passion of ours, and we aim leave places cleaner than we found them; we even ship a kids fishing net to collect any plastic that we see floating about while cruising. You've obviously learned a lot along the way and it's good to see your progression as content creators; especially with regards to the audio..! ;-). Actually, it would be interesting to know more of your backstory, what you did for day jobs before this, how you got into travel and sailing, and what your ultimate plans are... Given that you re-flagged Kawai as an Australian vessel, is your plan to sail her back to Oz..? That would be some trip (including two pretty significant ocean passages), although, to be honest, even though we're Aussies through-and-through, we cannot see ourselves giving up the Med. The place is just so beautiful and benign at the same time; there's just too many bitty things in the waters back home..! I remember, as a kid swimming in the open seas off North Queensland and the Reef, thinking nothing of it, but now I would see a Great White in every shadow..!
Anyway, hope all works out for your guys and you're back on the water sooner rather than later. After all, your fans need more content..! Fair winds and a following sea.
Hey Robert, great to hear from you! Yes you are correct, we are back in Oz working for the year. We returned home in December to see family for Christmas and then Covid happened :(. The Australian borders are still closed so we are taking the opportunity to work while we are back to earn as much as possible and this will help us with a few upgrades, including a water maker hahaha.
We have been asked many times what we do for work. Jase is a teacher and before we bought the boat I had a business that I sold. We definitely love the sailing lifestyle and can't wait to get back after all the craziness calms down. We first got into travel when we worked in London. Jase taught and I did HR work for a couple years which allowed us to travel on weekends and see a lot of Europe, which we love. How are you finding covid in the UK? It's great you are still able to travel, jealous :).
Yes as you know there is always so much rubbish which is such a shame. We like spending a couple hours cleaning a beautiful area, definitely makes you feel good returning it to a clean state.
We definitely plan to slowly return Kawai to Australia, we want to explore so many places and have plenty of time :). We don't have specific plans but are excited about the adventure. Must run, will respond with more tomorrow :). Chat soon

@@SailingKawai Well, the good news has to be that you're safe and healthy. Obviously, the flip-side is that you're not sailing and, even worse, back at work..!
So, I suppose you'd have to classify the Coronavirus situation in the UK is pretty grim. The government did pretty much everything wrong that they could, despite having the examples of early-movers Italy and Spain to go by; generally, they did too little, too late, and then occasionally went over-the-top and over-reacted. The per-capita mortality rate is one of the highest in Europe and the world, and the inevitable lockdown had the expected economic impacts. All in all, not great.
Travel opportunities this year have been something of a moving target. We'd initially planned a US road trip for May but quickly realized that it would be unlikely and so re-scheduled that to 2021. We gambled on July being safe for European travel, and we booked a sailing charter out of Corfu - Paxos, Antipaxos, and the North Ionian in general - but our flights were canned with only a week or so to go. The Greek government being concerned about opening up too early to UK travellers (at that time, the UK was at the height of its rate of transmission and deaths). We quickly reset for Menorca - no sailing, unfortunately, just lots of beach - and it worked out to be good timing because not long after our trip the UK introduced a quarantine on returnees from Spain; and this also included the Balaerics and the Canaries, which at that time had very low transmission rates.
We're now on a countdown to a couple of weeks in Sardinia, which we'd actually booked last year, and praying that nothing comes up to stop that. We'll be cruising the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena Archipelago. Next year we are planning to swap our deferred Corfu cruise for the Cyclades; we've been to some of the islands before but never sailed there, and it looks very special (as per your videos..!). We're thinking of September and maybe even into October, to avoid the crowds as much as possible; the winds and weather should be benign, and the water still warm.
But, in the meantime, I'm always available to take Kawai out for a spin and prevent her drying out too much while you guys are doing 9-to-5 back in Oz; it would be a hardship task, but I guess I'd be willing to sacrifice myself...! Stay safe.
@@SailingKawai Hi Guys. Just back from a holiday to Sardinia, including a week cruising the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena Archipelago; it's a really beautiful area and I can heartily recommend it, with the usual caveat of avoiding the high season. For what is a relatively small and confined area - the islands themselves are very tightly grouped - there was an enormous number of boats. And boats of all shapes and sizes, from the most modest RIB through to the biggest superyachts. But in September, there seemed to be enough space to accommodate everyone. This area was lots and lots of options, plenty of marinas but also lots of free and protected anchorages too; the main coast and the islands feature numerous beautiful places. I can recommend Cannegione as a great base of supply/port of refuge. The anchorage provides protection from the worst of any wild weather but also has a large buoy field (and a full-service marina if worst comes to worst). The buoys a reasonably priced and feature daily trash and recycling collection, plus free water. The town is just at hand and has good shopping and eating options. You may want to add this part of Italy to the bucket list..! Hope you're keeping healthy and happy.

@@SailingKawai Yeah its coming along slowly. Had the survey done on Friday and it went well. We are hoping to get the full repot back by this Friday and then start getting the paper work organised over the week end for Monday. So getting close. I think it was easier buying my house than this boat lol.....We seem to get two or three different answers on some of the questions we've asked lol. Cheers safe travels guys.

Wow, so few boats in Hvar Town compared to high season. Yet more boats than I would've expected in April. You can often briefly tie up to the quay there midday and take water for free.

What is the depth of your keel? Ours is 2.75 m. You guys are going to a lot of trouble to get fuel, but pretty sure we have stopped lots of places in Croatia and never had an issue. We hope all is well. Those sleepless nights are a whipping!
Hi Claudia, thanks for watching! Our keel is only 2.3m but everywhere (not that many places) we have looked on navionics it is showing 1-2 metres near the fuel station, we haven't risked checking to see if this is reality though. Jase doesn't mind doing the work to be safe. Wishing you guys the best :)

@@SailingKawai Yes we defo plan on getting a water maker. We plan on living mostly at anchor during the summer as marinas are way too busy and expensive. We are heading back to the UK for a few weeks on the 16th, then maybe off to Grease. Did you guys ever consider a 41ft boat, the Oceanis 40.1 and Hanse 418 look tempting but just worried if they would be too small. We are going to try and get some viewings for them.
Hey Nick, we have been mostly on anchor too and it's worked out well but yes a watermaker would be very handy! Yeah we did consider a 41 foot boat and we looked at some but they didn't really have enough space for Jase as he is quite tall 6 foot 1, and also crossing oceans we thought the 45 foot would be the safer option. Checking out more boats in Greece or just a holiday?
@@SailingKawai exactly what we thought, 45 really is the sweet spot for a couple sailing. We don't have a place to live in the UK so it's full time travel now untill we find a boat :) we have always wanted to explore mainland Grease so this is a good opportunity. When I see you tied to the rocks with a line as high as this one, I wonder whether you thought about marking it somehow, so other boaters don’t overlook it and get tangled.
Hi Thomas, yes we normally do attach fenders to the ropes :). We had only seen 1 boat in 2 days so thought it would be ok haha

Hey Klemen, we only have limited time with Jase's parents and have an agenda which is - Brac, Hvar, Pakleni, Korcula and Dubrovnik (all places we have already been but wanted to take them). @@SailingKawai, if u'll be on pakleni, Vis really isn't that far. Komiža bay is beautifull, ther's a cave where Tito resided during part of the WW2, also there is blue cave on a near by island really worth seeing and they filmed mama mia2 there 😂

Yes we did drop in to Milna before you got there however the weather changed and we had to move on to Hvar. I think Jase wrote to you on facebook so will reply more there. Would have been great to catch up, maybe in the future, we are coming back in July :)
