  • Apples and oranges no more! Up until now, we've had to compare micro arcade machines from Basic Fun's Arcade Classics & My Arcade's Micro Arcade line from afar, but now that Arcade Classics has released both Galaga and Dig Dug (both previously available from My Arcade) we can finally do a head-to-head comparison on a level playing field. In this video, Jon compares Dig Dug as it is on both platforms and tells you which one he thinks is the better of the two.

    The Basic Fun version of Dig Doug is FUN and EASY too play! The original title screen animations are complete and the cabinet looks very close to the actual arcade cabinet. I LOVE THIS GAME VERSION! The only complaint and yes it is a stupid one on my part ok, BUT I would have liked for the game to have a coin sound effect drop like on Ms. Pacman, yes I'm an 80's kid whose father worked at a mall arcade so I played this game a lot so the coin drop is more of a sentimental thing. Other than that, the game is a perfect replication! Another awesome review. I bought this along with Ms. Pacman last night at Walmart. People be safe if you go out!!!

    I find it fascinating that these games made in the 21st Century are accurate replicas of the original arcade game. They came out with handheld versions of the games when arcades were still a thing, but those games were very half-assed because you couldn't fit the electronics of an arcade game in a handheld replica like you can now. You couldn't have hi-res graphics on a tiny flat screen back then. You needed a box-shaped TV monitor and much bigger circuit board. In this day and age, everything can be done in something as tiny as an iPhone or a replica arcade cabinet.

    Thanks for reviewing this. I have the my arcade version. I got it for like $6 on clearance from gamestop and that made me want to get more. I make arcade cabinets and use shelves so that I can put a mini arcade in there. I was thinking about buying the basic fun one that I found on ebay for $20 but wanted to see how the gameplay was. I know it's only $20 but when you have to justify to a wife $20 is $20. If Basic Fun would have used the Vertical screen it would be a must buy. The screens are tiny as they are and then getting black bars on the side. It doesn't look good as a display piece but you are right the colors do look so much better than My Arcade. Thanks again.

    I wonder if one day Basic Fun or My Arcade will do a My Arcade of Donkey Kong or Mario Bros? Especially My Arcade since they NES roms meaning they have permission from Nintendo so it would make sense for them to include Donkey Kong and Mario Bros

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  Před 2 lety +1

      Not likely. It's not that they have license for all NES ROMs, but NES titles from other publishers like Namco & Taito. Nintendo has all but eliminated third-party licenses for their own in-house IPs. That's why you don't see anything from My Arcade, Basic Fun, Arcade1Up, etc. If any of those come out, they'll almost certainly come from Nintendo themselves.

    Basic Fun used the exact same game as they used in the Tiny Arcade. The mother board in the Tiny Arcade key chain game has alternate slots to change the sound for this exact use. I know, I’ve soldered them and changed out the button speaker from my Tiny Arcade to play this exact version. Nothing new here, but that being said it needed nothing new. It’s great as is.

    My Arcade wins hands down because you can open it up and unlock 5 other games. Also the screen might be more horizontal but at least it uses the whole LCD screen. If Basic Fun was going for authentic vertical then they should have mounted the screen vertically and proper 3:4 , that drives me nuts.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  Před 4 lety

      The waste of aspect is weird. I can only guess they made a good deal on tons of those 4:3 screens and just using them for 3:4 games is cheaper than having to units to source.

      Hadn't thought of that, TheStackingNerd. So I went looking, and the Japan-exclusive GBA Classic edition of Dig Dug also had that horizontal layout with the score along the left side. Plus, the Basic Fun edition clearly has a 2018 Namco Bandai copyright on the title screen, so all evidence suggests this is a new creation, not a repack of an old ROM.

    Basic Fun seems to have better screens and richer sounds. But loses points in my book because to play them you have to hold them like a handheld game, which is kinda awkward given their form factor. Thanks to their screen angle you really can't sit them on a table or desk in front of you to play unless you hunch over. MyArcade units are very much suited for tabletop play given their screen angle (and slightly larger size) and I like that they have a headphone jack (because not everyone wants to hear that). I agree MyArcade units just look better on a shelf to boot. Overall I think I'd rather go with MyArcade for easier play/use and some additional features (AC input and not having to unscrew the gosh darned battery cover). I have the Basic Fun Rampage, but if MyArcade ever put out their own I'd probably get theirs too for reasons described here.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  Před 5 lety

      I can hardly disagree with any of your observations, elzibiel. Although I hadn't considered the handheld/tabletop aspect of the Basic Fun before, but even there you're not far off. The MA units just look more arcade-y, and that's a plus. Thanks for watching!

    • @philipdefibaugh5683
      @philipdefibaugh5683 Před 3 lety +1

      The Basic fun is definately NOT a Namco ROM, take a close look at the title screen the Atari and Namco ROMS have the Pooka and Frygar carrying a banner with either Namco or Atari logo on top of the screen (depending on which country you are in playing it at an Arcade). This homebrew "clone" does NOT have this banner on top of the screen immediately proving this not to be the genuine article, but a replica ROM.
