I stopped buying these at MK's release but this one brought me back so I have something for the 40th. Looking forward to your take on it!
There have been a few gems in the mix of these tiny arcades since MK came out. Interested to hear your thoughts once you have a chance to watch.
@@GenXGrownUp Funny Walmart sent me the other model but did get it right my 2nd try! I think your take is spot on. It's going to sit on my shelf and I don't have the prior model so it was a good buy. I skipped the 1st one but do have the color old school lcd version too.

Yeah, that has great potential. Their new model of "custom" versions of these games have been pretty good lately from this manufacturer.

That's right. This video was from last year in 2020.
I'm collecting all of these mini arcades, did you know they actually made 5 different versions of Pac Man alone just from Basic Fun? They are killing me! There is a LCD thin cabinet version, a VFD type thick cabinet, the original thick cabinet, the 40th anniversary thick cabinet and a 40th anniversary VFD type thin cabinet.

I saw this on the Walmart website for 2 prices. One price was around 50 bucks if ordered for delivery, and the second for only 5 bucks if you pick it up at store; weird but true.
Wow. Be careful. I tried twice to order this one (once for pickup and once for delivery) and both times got the wrong one.
Thank you for your review Jon. I definately want this for my mini arcade display, but only to display as this version is too hard to play. Sadly I STILL can't find this version. They still have plenty of the earlier version (#14) of Pacman with the lousy Pacman cab art. The My Arcade version is worthless compared to this version. The more authentic player control panel and more importantly there are no leather rubbing together headache inducing sound effects. The effects are legit. Basic Fun though misled us in that early promo pics show the screen to be horizontal screen but sadly they went back to the vertical screen and NO GHOST ROLLCALL! it isn't Pacman without the rollcall! This is the 40th anniversary and to leave it out is pure lazyness.
As for the My Arcade version they should have either used the Namco Museum version or the NES version, but the ROM used in that one is the same one used in the yellow "pocket" My Arcade game that included 2 additional Pacman games that were included on the Namco Museum release. Why they didn't use the Arcade ROM for the pocket player is a mystery to me.
Very brave to peel that sticker off, I was wondering the same as you. Kind of frustrating how hard these are to find, and like you also ordered a few off Walmart and all were the standard version. The blister pack version at Target had the same issue.

These mini arcade machines are very cool. We wouldn't have believed back in the day you could buy a mini machine running the arcade ROM with a real video screen vs a preprinted LCD or VFD display.
That said, some are better than others. I tried and returned several, due to bad implementation, screen layout or not fun to play on the small joystick/screen.
Only 2 I have are a Defender, which actually runs Stargate/Defender II though the cabinet shows Defender??? One example of poor quality control, no attention to detail. But the artwork and cabinet design are very good for the money, open box Amazon. Made by Basic Fun #09602
Other unit is a MY Arcade Space Invaders Micro Player Mini. Outstanding piece. Perfect build quality and downscaled replica. Even uses a deep cabinet with mirror internally to reflect the video screen just like the original arcade!?
These units should state what ROM version they use- arcade or console with rev/date/etc
The 11-year-old in me is still a little giddy at how far we've come.
Another great review. The only Basic Fun unit I currently own is Dig Dug so I’ll definitely be getting this just so I can have a cheap yet decent and fun way to commemorate Pac Man’s 40th not to mention a good way to get a quick Pac Man fix in between working. I’ll take a nice looking and sounding arcade rom rewrite over the abysmal job Arcade Classics did on their 40th unit any day.

P.S. You mention the "abysmal job Arcade Classics" did on their 40th, but I think you mean My Arcade. I mix those up during shooting WAY more than I'd like to admit! 😜

No, they don't slow down passing through the side doors. You can see here when Blinky passes through it he doesn't appear to slow at all. 6:16

I don't have that version of Pac-Man or the number 14 one I had the number 71 which is the one where he moves a lot slower like the number one version did

Hi great vids just started collecting the my arcade micro cabinets here in the UK, I wanted to ask do you know what is happening with the my arcade streetfighter 2 cab that was supposed to have come out last year where 2 could be linked together for 2 player I have been looking online everywhere and can only find a handful of videos on YT from a conference last year but nothing to say if / when they got released.

u think adding clear Con-tact brand adhesive on the stickers would be good way to protect the sides? I haven't used the stuff in ages and wonder if it would be flush enough as to minimize or prevent air bubbles during and after applying
I think contact paper would definitely serve to protect the decals, though it might also dampen the "gold" reflective quality, too.

How can u say it’s fine when pac man is moving so fucking slow . That’s the problem wit all these basic fun systems . Major slow down
Agree to disagree. This custom version speeds up gradually as you play and though it feels a bit slower (which I mention in my #14 review), it's actually pretty close to the original (pre-speedup hack) and it accelerates gradually as you play.
In 2023, is there a way or link where I can get this item? or the #14 one? Can you recommend a place? @GenXGrownUp
eBay is your best bet. It's certainly no longer being manufactured, so new old stock (or used) is your best avenue.
