      Byron was the reason why the AFL softened the rules on bumping.

    I love it how one of his best moments was the bump on Biglands that these days would get him suspended for 6 weeks. AFL has gotten soft, Bryon was a tough nut, I loved watching him play

      I was watching the ball and then all of a sudden a crows player just disappears from view. Rewind, oh wait he just got laid flat and ethered by Bryon

      @Julie Clemens He was definitely expecting it, Biglands lined Pickett up, and Pickett lined Biglands up. They were both going for the bump, Pickett came off better.
      In the first shot of the bump (1:05) you can see when Biglands changes his mind from going for the ball (his teammate was closer) to shepherding Pickett.

    is it just me or does the "live" footage of Biglands getting KO'd look like Biglands made the b-line for pickett, not the other way round? he runs for the ball, sees his team mate about to get it, then changes direction and charges straight at him...

    • @ajwebsdane
      @ajwebsdane Před 4 lety +5

      thats how footy was played man - if you can't get to the ball you do what you can to assist your team mates and attempt to sheppard. So yep, Biglands went at Pickett but unfortunately for him he became another victim of Pickett's perfect timing.

    • @cantworkitout
      @cantworkitout Před 4 lety +2

      @@ajwebsdane i know, i love it and wished the game was still like it, but everyone seems to be saying, and still says, Pickett sniped him when he clearly didn't

    • @ajwebsdane
      @ajwebsdane Před 4 lety +2

      @@cantworkitout absolutely agree with you Baz. Personally I'm sick to death of the term "sniper" in this context. So many people can't seem to get their heads around that there is no such thing as a "sniper" within 5m of the contest/ball. If its 50m from the ball then that would be a "sniper". the term sniper has nothing to do with if someone can see it coming!

    Pretty handy at picking off a bloke who has eyes for the footy first and is vulnerable. Not super keen on putting his head over the pill to actually win the ball if has to be vulnerable to the hit.

    • @perfectlyinsane1376
      @perfectlyinsane1376 Před 3 lety +2

      True he wasn't a fan off putting himself in a vulnerable position... he was intelligent like that.
      Did you see the free kick he won against Voss? the one where he was going for the ball and Voss got him high.
      Also watch the Biglands bump again. Biglands saw his teammate was going to get the ball first and went for the shepherd, Pickett saw him coming and they both went the bump. Pickett had better timing.
      Pickett went hard for the ball, but he didn't dive in headfirst, when doing so would just get him knocked out.

    I played a lot of my junior footy with Bryon and know how much he loved kicking that footy. However, he also liked the drink and visiting the men's sauna which was his downfall. As combining the two didn't work out too well for the little Gromit!
