  • North Melbourne and Port Adelaide premiership player Byron Pickett was a physical beast and a penetrating user of the Sherrin. His bone-rattling bumps send shockwaves through opponents.

"It looks like Biglands was not aware of Byron Pickett, and that's to his disadvantage." Wonderfully understated.

...except in the previous wide screen scene you see Biglands accelerate to charge Pickett, and Byron didn't come off 2nd best in this case...

Very good player mate, I’m a bulldogs supporter & I went to a game at the G between the bulldogs & north in the nineties & he absolutely killed us playing at half back & im pretty sure he kicked 3 or 5 goals that night. He was a complete player, he could mark, kick goals, run hard straight lines, & his aggression & bravery were unchallenged.

The 65+m torpedo is a dying art, see how fast the ball was flying forward? I think modern day players think they float the ball in the air and it flies itself to the destination...
The left hand, right hand bouncing the ball.
The cruising past, bouncing the ball, loooooong kicks at high speed.
...and the context in that #5 preliminary final:
It was Port's 3rd consecutive home final in Week 1 of the finals after finishing the home and away season ranked #1 after 22 games.
In 2002 they hosted the final in week 1 but lost and then lost the away Preliminary Final,
In 2003 they hosted the final in week 1 again but lost again, and then lost the away Preliminary Final again.
In 2004 they finished 1st AGAIN, and we all held our breath... They were chokers! Remember Mark WIlliams crying as he strangled himself high with his own tie - a Grand FInal coach moment for the ages! Well, in week 1 of the finals, Choppy Pickett was having none of that: 4 of Port's first 7 goals in 1.5 quarters, they were off to a flying start to host the Preliminary Final. And he iced the grand final, too - see the last highlight in the video.

So good leaving him Pyke way behind like a one wheeled supermarket trolley.

He destroyed Brisbane in that grand final. Brisbane were going for four premierships in a row.

I just love how he's so balanced he's bouncing the ball early and easily left hand and right hand, and thus able to dodge around and accelerate as the situation unfolds.
And yeah, that 80+m run from deep in the backline to the paint on the wing and the perfect 50m kick at full sprint to the leading forward 30m from goal is probably the greatest goal assist ever.
Game time situation was to break Brisbane's hearts... you need 5 goals in 9 minutes, forget about that now.
(But maybe Stuie Dew to Mark Williams in the 2008 Hawthorn Grand Final, though...?)

A man who changed the rules of footy, his legal hard hit where so damaging the AFL had to protect the players that had been stupid enough not to evoke the first rule of basic footy PROTECT YOURSELF.

True hey. He was the best hitter not the biggest player but could do a lot of damage like Michael long from Essendon lol.
