  • Another one-day build. This time we are trying to tackle our paint storage situation. How to store a bunch of cans in a space efficient manner, but still make them easily retrievable?

    Also just a mention. The Steeplechase ride has an operating cousin at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the UK. It's an Arrow Dynamics version from the 1980s. And now the only one remaining in the world.

    Jeez Pete your grandkids will grow up remembering how you built them their own private carnival and also how you would let them sleep in the drawer of your workbench. In other words: BEST GRANDPA EVER!
    P.S. I find Lowe's to be slightly pricier than Home Depot...but there have been a handful of times where Lowe's carried something that Home Depot didn't, whilst I can't say the inverse.

      They are probably going to grow up really confused. 20 years from now they’ll be chatting and Ro will be like “what was that whole deal where the crazy old man tried to convince me I was going to sleep on a drawer?”

    Great idea. Thanks for the video. I've been wondering how to manage my accumulated cans.

    We moved the HW heater from the corner of the garage (to make room for a utility sink) over to next to the HVAC (Florida). But, that put it right next to the door from the house. Rather than see the utilities every time we go through the door, I built a 6' "bookcase" just for spray cans - with a little wraparound the tank. That's on hinges bolted to the wall, so it can swing away (or be removed) should the heater need service. So, its a wall of paint cans but still looks better.
    Nice drawer you made. Reminds me of the time, traveling, we had Peter sleep the whole night in a drawer - you know, pulled out and on the floor. HE doesn't remember.

    Lowes vs Home Depot....I typically hate whichever store I happen to be standing in at the time as they're usually out of what I'm looking for or it's just annoyingly disorganized. My closest Home Depot does usually have a decent selection of cull wood though, so that's always a bonus.

    Between Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Menards. Home Depot is the favorite. They have more stores and their online pickup is faster.

    We have both HD and Lowe's. Which one I go to depends entirely on what I need... I.E. - Home Depot has better electrical hardware for roughing in electrical, but Lowe's has a better selection of caulking/sealants. We also have a plethora of independently owned Ace Hardware stores, but selection is always mediocre and price always 20-50% more. PS-Polyshades works better in a spray gun. I've had luck with a couple projects (saltwater aquarium tank stand and canopy) by thinning it out and using a HVLP. It does take multiple coats. I'm tickled that 30 year old can was still good.

    Normally, the smaller slide can be removed from the two other ones for easy attaching to the tray (we use the same slides for computers).

    I'm more of a Home Depot guy because I got into the Ryobi ecosystem after getting stuff second hand like batteries. But since we have both I usually just go to whichever is closest to work, or home, or whoever has items in stock. Still wish Hechninger was around. Ace Hardware feels a lot better, but the selections aren't always the biggest, but they sometimes have the oddball stuff the big boxes don't carry like a 2 pole 15a breaker for my Sense energy monitor.

    • @PeteRondeau
      @PeteRondeau  Před měsícem +2

      Funny you should mention that, My family started me on ryobi tools years ago for christmas or father's day.. Can't remember which. you can see I still use the blue tools from the starter set. That is the only reason I ever go to HomeDepot. In our town though, Lowes has been around forever. They started in a fairly small store, then they moved to a bigger store, and now an even bigger store. Those years of customer loyalty in one town are hard to compete with when Home Depot moved in relatively recently. Yes! Hechinger's, The world's most unusual lumber yard.

    • @philsowers
      @philsowers Před měsícem

      @@PeteRondeau I've made peace with the HD Ryobi tools because they haven't changed battery types unlike Craftsman did with their handtools. My buddy has also begrudgingly agreed being a Lowes guy with Kobalt at home, Dewalt, Milwaukee, etc at work, there just isn't enough of a variety of tools and ends up with a half way to Snap-On tool price due tot he name. Regarding Hechinger, it's mostly nostalgia because i was too young to understand the intricacies, but I also got to go to a bunch of warehouses like Grainger, Ferguson, Dominion Electric Supply, etc back in the day since my dad was a licenced electrician that was a huge DYIer that even built our home from the ground up. I picked up a couple colors of the retro Hechinger shirts from Local Vyntage. It starts a lot of conversations with those that know that are my age and older all around the mid-atlantic & DC metro area.

  • @432b86ed

    I never thought about it before, but couldn't you mount the glides on the bottom? But then you would lose some height from the glide thickness. Might bend with all the weight. Hmm.

    • @PeteRondeau
      @PeteRondeau  Před 17 dny +1

      You can, but you need to buy drawer slides that are intended for that. They need to be engineered for the ball bearings to work and take the load in that orientation and for the rails to not bend.
