Jeffrey C thanks
Thanks dude
Way too much talking
Thanks so much!
Yes : want the pics, not the words
Thanks!
When you get a 3d printer and all your friends want you to print stuff for them...
yeah that’s me
For money!
Same. My lk1 comes next week and my friend keeps asking for apex stuff
same😂
My policy is if you create the model and pay for at least 75% of the filament then go all out, or if you 3D printed ME then everything is free lol
y'all remember when 3d printers came out and is was incredible that they could print chess pieces
Yep. I remember seeing my first 3D printer commercially available locally. It cost 5500 dollars and was huge.
@@PunakiviAddikti had it a small print bed?
And one piece would take years to make
I would but I wasn't I live then lol
MrRedstone Now they cost $90 and do better jobs then their ancestors.
I think the nautilus gears could be used for an axe mechanism on a combat robot. The variable gear ratio could be used to overcome the initial inertia to get the axe moving, then accelerate it faster and faster before impact.
That's actually pretty brilliant. Hmm!
great, until the robots rise up and axe us!
Umm. They scale to a 1 to 1 ratio. yes the force is higher ifyou drive it starting from the gear meshing from the small end but there isn't any sort of "gearability" (if that makes sense) to increase its lift capacity. Plus it would have to be metal if its going to be a sturdy, long lasting robot.
Yes
Genius
I want to make sure emmett gets (another) shout-out for the original Iris Box design. My design is a little smaller, and a little easier to print, but the insane mechanism design was all his. He even gave me some advise on my re-mix.
nice
👌
Fantastic showcase Angus. The Nautilus Gears were one of my very early prints and I was so happy when it turned out perfectly. Since then I've printed most of the models here, yeah gears fascinate me too. Those I haven't printed yet are definitely on my 'to print' list.
Spike I
Spike, doesn't Gears fascinate us all. I do think they are part of human nature.
You could very well be right, either that, or it's my inner automaton :-)
congrats i gave you like number 100
Angus, rewatching this video after a couple of years makes me think of when I first learned about 3d printing. I just want to say that your channel has been a big inspiration to me becoming a mechanical engineering student, and even in high school I looked to your videos to troubleshoot my school's printers, find cool prints, and help build our local makerspace. I really look forward to see what you come out with next.
I’M FINALLY GETTING A PRINTER!!!
I’m SOOO exited. My first idea was to make a clip on my phone case for custom attachments.
Printed the Nautilus Gears and the Gear bearing right now both turned out great without any rafts or support on any of them. Thanks for sharing! :D
Okay, that last cube from Emmett had me like "whoa :o" Love this piece
One of the first things I ever printed was Emmett's gear cube. A couple of things to note, this comes with different files with differing ratios of teeth. Also, after several attempts with different lubricants, I found that good ole Vaseline works wonders. It keeps the cube from making a squeaking noise when rotated. Simply apply to the pins and you are good to go!
Thanks Angus. I'm always looking for machines like this and you can print out.
That gear cube is relatively popular in the cubing community. It’s called a gear shift and usually comes black with stickers of different colors on each side.
You have just reminded me that I need a gear shift for my collection
Polyalchemy sure make some stunning filaments! That's one of the coolest purple PLAs I've ever seen.
I printed the Iris box back in 2016 and took it to every maker faire ever since...people are always stunend by it!
"You can even store things in it"
Fantastic
You should have put in the "Straight Rod through a Curved hole" 3D print
what did you just say?!
*confused unga bunga*
That iris box is the coolest thing ever! I've always wanted something cool like that, and it almost reminds me of "the eye" from steampunk tower. And the gear cube is even cooler!
This video alone makes me want to get a 3D printer...
I printed Emmett's gear heart. Very impressed! It was hard to turn for a while but the more I turned it and wore the gears in now it spins pretty effortlessly
Great video! When I was working at as technician at Texas Instruments and I guess before steppers were cheap, there was a tool that would inspect the four sides of an PLCC IC and it used the geneva mechanism to orient each of the four side towards the inspection camera.
Hey Angus, "Darles Chickens" here, great video! I designed the triangle bearing gears with you in mind, so thanks for the inspiration. Hopefully you can get the print to work! Slooooow that printer down, cowboy! I shot you an email.
Fast printing is the only way to go! That's why I got an SLA printer... wait
I can print the iris box on a JGAurora but speed is everything. I'm trying your gear next!
Gaaa! So much pressure for a newb hillbilly with a cr-10! I was telling Angus I'm going to split the model on thigiverse so parts can be assembled post-print.
czcams.com/video/DNiuVaoqaE4/video.html
Feeling quite inspired after watching this Angus, thanks! Just started printing the Gear Bearing on my MK3!
The gear cube is tripped out. I want one
I think the last model was based off of oskar van daventer's gear shift puzzle
The golden ratio is nothing compared to the ultimate beauty of *root 2.*
Torin very very true
or pi..
Nah. Golden ratio is less rational. Shame about the name but its got the best repeated fraction. Root 2 has the history but its repeated expansion kinda sucks.
Mathematicians: *Upgrades, people, upgrades!*
Thanks for producing and posting this video. It as my introduction to 3D printing. Very cool!
I just 3dprinted the gear cube. It is sooo awesome! Well worth the waiting. I had 3 failprints, bad bed ethetion... even my rafts failed. But it moves so awesome!! If you want to make the gear cube: download the updated version! Sand the pins and use some oil in the holes. It will be fine.
Fun Fact: Emmet's Gear Cube was actually featured in the last scene of the Wily Castle in Mega Man 11, but at an angle.
I was looking for that comment! A man of culture indeed .
The Cube gear is an actual puzzle. I can't remember the name, but it is not WCA legal.
Jared Kaiser what's WCA?
Michael Bithell World Cube Association. Its a speedcubing community/organization
Michael Bithell yes watz WCA????
Jared Kaiser it’s a mefferts gear shift.
bryan De Zeeuw the gear shift has a slightly different mechanism allowing you to pull two halves apart removing that set from the meshed gears.
Very cool. I used a couple of these when I did a 3D printing workshop at a local craft store a while back. Great examples!
Another great video. Thanks Angus. You are always giving me ideas for what to use in my videos. Some of these will make great prints for beginner printing video's to help convince people to buy a 3D printer.
Have to admit I use three of those to show off my printer a LOT (Nautilus gears, gear bearing and the classic cube gear).
As a steampunk magician I forsee the iris box being used to present a few tricks so thank you for bring it to the forefront.
NOW how many of us also send people to Makers Muse as an example of a creative person who is generous and wise and an awesome CZcams channel?
Him: The Gear cube
Me: *Oh? You mean the Dwemer Lexicon?*
I finally have a reason to live. Thank you.
@@tanzkoyolforever7743 *hooray*
I printed the cube gear last night. I pit a little grease on the pins to make it spin smoother. Definitely one of the coolest things I've printed
I've been printed the HELLRAISER gear cube I don't know how many times. People just love it, and considering the HELLRAISER cube does transform in the movie, that adds an extra layer of coolness to it. Thanks to the two people who made this model a reality. :)
Can you make a video about machines that are impossible to make without 3D printing? Like that gear bearing
I'm literally printing a gear cube right next to me as I watch this
Is it done yet
@@mateuszodrzywoek8658 maybe they printed in ABS and didn't have air circulation.
Wow!! The cube was by far the best!!
definitely gonna try out that iris box as a gift box, and the gear cube looks awesome as well!
Best designs are my own, in my opinion
Definitely love designing my own things!
Hey Angus, what is that purple filament, totally awesome
Polyalchemy! I think it's nightshade purple
I was going to ask the same question. Wow, that's fantastic filament!!
A very deep and rich color, i will need to get a couple spools myself.
Bruce Jackson pretty sure it’s nightshade elixir
Love the Geneva mechanisms... I printed a card box for my daughter's Magic the Gathering cards, and in the lid I made a 0 to 39 counter using a Maltese Cross design. Of course, now she needs one that can do larger numbers, so back to the drawing board.
I was actually planning on printing the Geneva mechanism on stream tonight, great video sir makes me want to print more fun stuff
That purple filament is pretty cool. Brand?
Polyalchemy elixir , I'll add a link in the description !
I like how he says “you can 3D print at home” like literally everyone owns a 3D printer.
well there are some pretty good ones for 200 bucks or less
As soon as you rotated that gear cube, my mouth dropped open. I totally have to get one of these.
This can be a good for self stimulation!!! These all look sooo good
Awesome shirt!! 😁😁
A cool person gave it to me :P
Technically the gear cube is a gear skewb
wtf
𝕎𝕋𝔽
awesome do another! I've been looking for more of this sort of thing.
These are just amazing, gotta try some for myself!
0:23 WOW O_O that is different. yeah that is really is like me when entering college. even though I did not learn 3D print at that time, so well said.
Emmett???
*hears the lego song in the back of my heard*
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Hmm.
EVERYTHING IS AWESOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME
Everything is awesooooooooooommmmmmme
Everything is cool when you’re part of a team
Everything is awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Everything is cool when you need a big poo
Dag!!!!! My first 3d printer should be on my doorstep sometime tomorrow-I had a clear plan of what I want to print as soon as I get it set up---After watching this I might be forced to rethink the plan. Thanks.
Amazing video, these are the kind of projects that i go searching for
What would you recommend for a first 3d printer? Im in Australia for shipping and im thinking the cocoon create touch.
Angus Cos hey I am from Sydney Australia. I was like you and didn’t know what printer to get. I went with the JGaurira A5 from LightInTheBox. Must say it’s such a great printer and LightInTheBox sent it out with in a week and got it within 3 weeks of purchase. Anyway good luck with your decision
I'll definitely look into it, thank you!
I have a Cocoon Create Touch. If you can get your paws on one they are a decent printer for the price and you learn so much about printing with it.
Dont buy the Tevo Tornado. I bought it and its needs to much tuning to suceed a decent print.
If you dont mind spending money a Ultimaker would really blow your mind.
If thats too expensive you should buy a Prusa i3 mk3 (or another version)
If thats too expensive too I would recommend a Chinese printer and buy the Cr-10(s) or JGAurora A5
Prisewise the JGAurora is the best
Best results you will get from the Ultimaker(5).
Dont buy a SLA printer for the first one
Just to confuse the issue - my Tornado worked out the box and and as my first 3D printer I couldn't be happier.
Really decent community of people to help you tinker with it as well (I'm drawing a line between tuning and tinkering) as well.
However, I'll agree some people have had a bit less luck. CR10(s) was what I'd settled on - but Tornado is significantly cheaper if you can grab a sale and has better mains-powered bed (so trade those points off against maybe needing to adjust on arrival).
Maybe other advantage is new Tornados come with Makerbase Gen-L board - I didn't get one, but bought one for about $15 and then maybe $25 for a set of TMC stepper drivers which I'm going to have a play with over the weekend...
...maybe the problem is defining what's meant by a "starter printer". Do you want to just print something - or have a hankering to learn to compile some Arduino firmware and build your own DuPont connectors?
Personally I think the important thing is just to pull the trigger and get yourself a nice cheap Chinese model.
You'll learn a lot and whatever you buy you'll:
1) Decide whether or not printing is for you
2) If 1=Love, then decide you need a better printer. Then you can embark upon the eternal question of whether to buy yet more bits to swear at as they initially don't work - or just bite the bullet and get a Prusa (which as far as I can see is universally accepted as the best value printer in existence).

Beta fidget spinner
First video that blows my mind 5 times in a row.
I’ve printed all these accept for the Geneva mechanism. They are all so amazing especially the Iris box
It looks like you use rafts for most of these. Is that your recommendation?
I printed many of them on the Cetus Mk2, which has a rough print surface and really needs a raft. You don't need it for any of them except maybe the Gear Bearing if you have trouble.
I’ve got an Anet A8 with a glass bed. I guess it’s time for trial and error.
Eric Ka I also have an Anet A8 with a glass bed, and I have spent a good deal of time getting it tuned perfectly. It has a few of the standard mods such as frame stiffeners and belt tensioners. I have successfully printed all of these models without rafts. It took me 4 attempts at the iris to finally get one that worked, probably because I was using a cheap PLA. But hey, it worked! And who says you can't get great prints with an A8? Rubbish!
What's the cheapest possible way to start 3d printing, like diy sketchy China stuff.
I recommend the tronxy x1 , I discuss it in my budget makerspace project videos
I would recommend the MOD-t, but New Matter went out of business. I picked up how to use it in a day or two and now I'm the most knowledgable 3D printer guy at my school.
Dang, and I just ordered a Creality Ender 3
MOD-t has no weird issues that other printers have. The head is extremely stable and fixed in place, the bed just moves to print. It doesn't have a huge print area but it's reliable.
Super awesome. Love this stuff.
I printed the iris when I bought my new Aldi printer (the most recent batch). Works like a charm, first attempt.
I still think that the gear cube is a little bit too much of a ripoff of Oskar Puzzles' gear shift to only care about Emmet's design without crediting Oskar.
IAmPattycakes ya, when I first saw it, it reminded me of the Gear Shift
5:48 i can already hear the edgy 10 year-olds saying "omg its kevin the cube from fortnite"
Ikr? Every damn time I hear that damn string of words I die a little inside.
Game changer for many future inventions
Thanks for the video! I'm in the process if printing the screwless cube gears.
Wait, we have the same name. :-D
Angus' unite!
so does Angus beef
Yeah sure because everyone can afford a good quality 3d printer
*killing myself right now*
uriel galindo orozco get the monoprice mini printer. Amazing quality and it’s only $200
Thank you for letting me know about Emmett. My favorite designer and I never knew the name!
Brilliant! Im just warming up the printer! Thanx dude!
Says don’t need hardware
*uses 3D printer*
you look so much cuter with short hair xD
I really really need a haircut ;.;
dont worry you are still cute even if it is long :P
Fantastic video. You just keep convincing me I think I'm going to have to get a 3D printer.
that cube gear thing.. ...blew my mind!
look at all those rafts. EW! haha
Haha, have to use them on the cetus ;) worth it for print quality and ease of use tbh
I don’t understand, why do people think rafts are gross or bad? Do they make the designs at the end look bad?
I'm just kidding you know, they are a great tool. I just like to save on some filament if possible.
Soulsbreaker oh ok, that makes sense. Sorry -it was a legit question, I wasn’t trying to poke fun.
I'd rather spend a little bit extra filament on a successful print than spend a lot on a failed one 😉
Some really cool parts, I can't wait to show off the Polyjet printed item I've built, (although with the world hitting pause, I only have my working prototype to fondle for the foreseeable future.)
Omg.. the gear cube looks pretty cool :3
Very cool! I shall attempt these myself so I can show off what 3D printers can do.
Coool, thx i was looking for cool, simple projects to do, and this are perfect
This looks so cool ive always loved 3d printing but never really got the chance use one til recently.
I love that nightshade filament too!
Great video. I just got my first 3D Printer last week (Cr 10 mini). I’ll definitely try out some of them
Great selection of mechanical prints Angus. The gear cube has been a favourite with visiors, its eye catching on the shelf and they grab it and soon after exclaim "no way!" or "holy sh*t!" when it moves. Add a small amount of Super Lube or dry PTFE lube when you assemble, spining parts to ensure lube spreads and print imperfections get smoothed.
Apart from being just cool these designs showcase how possible it is to take constant rotation and apply it in a different direction or different way. Good for sparking ideas and for designing practical builds like tracking mounts for photography, astronomy, solar projects for starters.
these are amazing, had to re-watch, new sub for you, great video!
Thanks bro its so satisfying😮
I printed the iris box a long time ago when I worked in IT for a school district. Now that I own a 3D printer, I can print one and take it apart to see how it is made.
The Gear Cube is amazing, I will ask my brother if he can make one ^^
There are so many variations to that gear cube. My favourite of course being Oscar van deventers.
I'm glad all of these are on thingiverse as I use a Flash Forge creator pro 3D printer and it was the only place I knew to get file from
I'm so excited to get in to this stuff
It's amazing to see people amazed by the Geneva mechanism. Other mechanisms are interesting as 3D printable toys, but the Geneva mechanism could very well be built with a wood panel and common power-tools. It has been used in the industrial worlds for more than a century, now.
Printed the Iris box on my DIY Prusa clone and it took a bit of fettling and sore fingers but I got it to work OK, nice video, next the gear bearing.
Geometric vases are my favorite quick, unfailable, demo prints as you can get a fairly large print in half an hour. Specially around xmas where the can server as decorative bulbs that can slip over standard mini lights, just print in something at least semi-translucent.
Some of my favs for this
Geaornament, thing:38948
Geoflower, thing:982849
Round geoflower remix, thing:1199549
SPIRAL vase, thing:481259
This is awesome! Thanks!
I guess the iris box (already printed it btw, worked perfectly after snapping out) and the bearing are the most useful in this list.
I have the iris box on my tool box at work. I'm a tool and die maker. My coworkers constantly play with it. Cool thing to show people.
Hi i am new to 3d printing. Amazing what it is capable of thanks for showing there awesome prints. Gone have a lot of fun (and some frustration) experimenting
these are bloody awesome.. hoping to design and print something like that in future soon... need a 3D printer first..
