EXCELLENCE EL CARMEN 2021 | CATAMARAN TO SAONA ISLAND | VLOG

We spent a couple of weeks at Excellence El Carmen in the Dominican Republic in December 2021 and were so lucky to be able to do an excursion to the beautiful Isla Saona. Our Sunwing rep told us that we'd be taking a speed boat to the island and a catamaran back which was great as we wanted to spend as much time on the island as we could. But no, that wasn't the case and we ended up on a 2 hour catamaran ride from Bayahibe Beach to Saona Island. Then had quite the experience on the speed boat trip back! I chose the WRONG spot to sit on the boat and got absolutely soaked from the overspray. lol, I had salty sea water slapping me in the face for most of the trip back. Yes, Woodie was a gent and offered me his seat, but no use the both of us being soaking wet. lol, it was fine though. I'm glad I had my towel!!
The excursion was nice, but we wouldn't do it again unless we had a private tour with more time on the island. We had a couple hours after eating lunch to explore. That sounds like plenty of time but not for me who wants to take lots of different video, etc. We wanted to try snorkeling but ran out of time and we also found that you'd have to go out a way from shore to get clearer water. I'm sure there are nice snorkeling spots there somewhere!

Hi there, heading to EEC in June and wanted to book a tour similar. Do you remember which company did this?

Hi Kati, we booked our whole vacation through Sunwing, so we also booked our trip through our Sunwing Rep Kelvin. The only complaint is that when he told us about the excursion to Saona Island, he said we could choose either a catamaran or speed boat to the island, so we chose the speed boat so that we would have more time on the island, but during the actual trip, there was no speed boat for us and we got stuck with the catamaran tour which took 2 hours!
There are different tour companies that come in to assist their vacationers (like Sunwing) so if you book through one, you can approach them. There is also the resident tour operators who have a permanent booth to book tours. They stand at the bottom of the stairs every day by the martini bar to try to sell people tours. You can try them, but do some homework on them because I hear it's hit and miss with them.

Hi, I have two questions! Was the water a whole lot better there than at the resort? We are headed to EEL next month! Also, how/why did you go from the catamaran to a speed boat at some point?

Hi, the water was a bit better yes. It wasn’t as clear as I thought it would be but the waves really stirred the sand up underneath close to shore. It was fun playing in the waves and the undertow wasn’t too bad at Saona. We like the water at EEC better than Exc Punta Cana because the undertow can be really strong at EPC although the beach frontage is way better at EPC. We were originally supposed to get to Saona Island by speed boat but that didn’t happen and we had to take the catamaran. The catamarans couldn’t get close to shore so they were moored out a bit and we had to get ferried by another boat to the catamaran and then the same when we got to the island - The catamaran was out a bit and we had to transfer to a transport boat to the island shore. Then on the way back at the end of the trip, the speed boat was able to get onto shore to pick us up directly. Enjoy EEC, it’s awesome!
