The Number 10 position - a number and position associated with the greatest of footballing greats. But this position has been marginalised in the modern era. Teams have moved from one pivotal playmaker to a collective creative effort.
Until recently. The Number 10 is returning, the Number 10 is reinventing. Alex Stewart explains.

Props to the coach/teacher, repeatedly dislocating his shoulder and capping it off with a backflip.
I know right? My teacher won't even sever his arm and point it at the blackboard. I think he lacks dedication.
hahhaha yes
@@thebombspayloadisexposed What? What kinda school do you go to? All of the teachers I know at least can dislocate their hips, both women and elders including the principal who does it quite often and is the best at it. There's one teacher who's strict af who is unwilling to do it because he is a tryhard when it comes to maintaining a straight back and posture, but even he turns his head nigh-180 degrees like an owl whilst simultaneously doing a 360 upside down breakdance to make it up for it

"Classic 10 - Be creative
Modern 10 - Be everything"
It's such a shame Ăzil couldn't adapt. At least we got to see him before the "be creative 10" completely disappeared
True..I think the the modern No.10 needs to have the stamina of a horse
Ideal 10 - Be Messi
Tell that to Ăzil
Shinigami actually the ideal 10 is Maradona
Someone needs to count up the number of times that the coach/teacher horrifically decimated his shoulder.
I like your choice of the word "decimate" here since the video's topic is the number 10 in football and the word's origin's are rooted in the latin word decem which means ten. Not sure if it was intentional but it was genius nontheless.
I counted and funny enough, it was 10.

It's 11:20 Pacific Time my end right now. Tifo is definitely worth putting off sleep for. I really liked watching the game as a kid, but now that I'm older, I'm really interested in learning about the tactical part of the game, role of each player, and the purpose of specific formations, like a classic 442, 442 diamond, 433, 352, etc.
Amazing!!! That is true dedication, thank you! đ
@@uncreative5766 Thank you! It's amazing to hear that - especially when we put off sleep for Tifo! đŽđ„đ±đš
Juan RomĂĄn Riquelme, Ronaldinho, Jorge Valdivia. More magic in any of these three names than in the entire Harry Potter saga combined.
Valdivia was a amazing player when he was fit. Something which became increasily rare once he move out of Palmeiras in 2008.
It's great to see no. 10s making a comeback. They really looked like a dying breed at one point. Gives me hope we can use Havertz to his full potential with time
You got Havertz, Mount, Ziyech, Pulisic all competing for that position đ plus Werner who just excelled at that position after clearly failing to convert into number 9 as Lampard planned.
Kelvin sudirman you are partiall Wright but for me as Chelsea Fan the only No.10 is ziyech . But with the Formation we use nowadays , it needs to no10s Like a pair of ziyech and Werner who are very Attack minded or haverts and pulisic .
@@isakmustafa9704 I'm not a Chelsea fan but my favorite of the bunch is Mason Mount. He brings stability and can do many things on that position. I'm still skeptic whether Ziyech and Havertz can really turn out to be good signing tbh. Just an opinion.
@@kelvinsudirman4072 Mount is an 8 , Pulisic and Ziyech are winger. Kai is the only real no.10 and chelsea don't play a system with a no.10 anyway
@Owl normaly he Plays as a winger but for me His berfect Position is a 10 i think he can even play Cm better than jorginho.
The number 10 is one of my favourite positions and that's why I love the 4-2-3-1 formation
the number 10 will always be my favorite position. I personally donât play there, i couldnât regardless, but usually whoever plays there is either magical or insanely smart. Good work Tifo.
I am enjoying the videos at the moment. Keep it up!
Bruno Fernandez has definitely been one of the prime examples of re inventing the number 10 role, but TIFO's pick for the example is : Ibrahim Sangare!
When you describe a modern no. 10, you're basically describing Maradona who was a genius but also a true fighter on the pitch, playing hard defense and tracking back always.
Great vid âŠ.covered it all ! Iâm 40 years old , I play for a vets team as a number 10 âŠloving it âŠkeep up the good work
Love it. Thanks for the quality work.
I feel like Mourinho has always used a #10 this way (Deco, Lampard, Sneijder, & Oscar) and pundits used to criticize his overly defensive tactics, but today it is now considered an innovative and integral role in the âmodern gameâ. At inter for example, One full back joins the midfield or stays back (Zanetti) while the other overlaps as a creative winger (Maicon), and a #10 helps out defensively (Sneijder).
Great examples :) I loved the video.
Very informative. Love these
I cannot state enough how much I love this channel.
defensive midfielders are the most important for managers nowadays ex: liverpool
Bayern
Liverpool plays with box to box midfielders. 3 of them.
@@johnd.hernandezrey8577 i think fabinho is both
Modern day No:10s need workrate and stamina to roam from the central positions. This is what happened to Ozil. He never adapted. Modern No:10s either drop deep (like KDB), make runs across the CB (like Bruno Fernandes) or roams to wider positions (like Grealish)
Or Cut inside, a La Messi, Neymar Coutinho, or start as 9 and fall deep opening up spaces a la Firmino or Messi.
Your videos are superb!!!
I think an important part in reinventing the 10 in a more free and creative way is what Thomas MĂŒller achieved as a "Raumdeuter", exploring space in different parts of the pitch and maintaining a defensive presence. This style of play is now adapted by many Number 10 players in different variations. MĂŒller really was the first completely "free" 10.
We looked at this here: m.czcams.com/video/sZsJo7ZKdjQ/video.html
@@Tifo I loved that video, it really shined a light on this ingenious playstyle development! Thank you for your great content!
As always - excellent clarity
Im surprised you didnt mentioned Thomas MĂŒller, who became a number ten. He is a hard working and fluid midfielder. And his ability to find space between the lines makes him so hard to defend
Great video
THE LEGENDS ARE BACK
Tifo, can you do a video about liquidated clubs and which clubs you predict to dissolve (mainly those currently participating in the EFL) in the next few years. Would make an interesting video.

great one Tifo!
Now the man not only rotates his arms in a 360 motion, but his arms are detachable and even he himself can rotate! Absolutely perfect Tifo!
Glad the animator had their fun moving the coach's arm, the flip at the end was a nice touch. The rest of the video was good too.
Beautiful and concise explanation with a dab of history as usual
Kind of semantics really. In plenty of those 4-3-3s, one of the wingers often played more inside like a 10. This is still the case. Some years, depending on the coach and the players around him, Messi is probably more of a 10 than anything else. They never went away. Like a lot of things in football and modern life in general, the definitions simply became blurred.

Such as David Silva when he was in city. Plus Bernardo Silva As well, but as a more all rounded midfielder, who roams freely. Hakan from Milan still plays as a classical number 10, and I enjoy it a lot.
Basically .. Bruno Magnifico đ GGMU
Itâs like being on the calm app listening to football analysis
Great analysis
I think one of the biggest believer in the number 10 which is supposed to be the most creative role is the most criticized coach in this channel. Jose Mourinho has always believed in this role. Deco (Porto), Lampard (Chelsea), Sneijder (Inter), Ozil (Madrid) and even now with Nbombele at Spurs who have been superb.
tifo contents never miss. top lads!
great stuff tfo
This was amazing -Argentinian-American joga bonito lover at ESPN. I think De Bruyne is a perfect example of a contemporary number 10.
De Bruyne is more a 8/10 hybrid imo
I feel Stuart Armstrong of Southampton fc is also an eg. of modern day no. 10, as he stays on the right wing often when out of possession and tucks in the centre when team gains back position. Nice video!
I'm a celtic fan and he was great for us, seen him more as a box to box 8 though with a goal threat, he's a great athlete and works well for the team out of possession, and can bomb forward, shoot from range and end up on the end of things as a 3rd man runner from midfield.
@@jordantaylor8180 right!
I said this when 10s were out if fashion for a few years. The old 10s sat in zone 14 and distributed and cteate. Modern football (starting 15 years ago). Space and creativity was found by switching zones and positions. Overlaps, underlaps, deep 8s, false 9s. It was the lady static attacking position
I'm loving players like smith Rowe and mount, they get back and do their defensive duties and are hella technical, get further forward quicker than ever
Ok, this is the 3rd or 4th video I see from this channel. I only need to see 2 more in order to be 100% convinced itâs the best football channel on youtube.
This is one of the best soccer knowledge channels online
The way #10 was described in the start is exactly how I play... ive become obsolete
I played sweeper in my day....need I say more? If you are under 30 you have probably never heard of the position. It was a free roam defender that played as the "1" in a 3-1-3-3 formation, used heavily in the early 90's.
Thought Grealish was at least getting a mention here
Grealish doesn't play as a number 10 in the villa system. Can't include him in this.
@@animeshkhare1769 neither does KDB or Bruno that's the point of this list. He starts in the left winf but he is the de facto number 10
@@miguelbraz2629 Bruno does play as the number 10 in the utd system. Your point is right though, Grealish shouldâve got a mention considering Rodriguez did, as they play somewhat similar roles drifting infield
Omg i was talking about today with my brother . The #10 has changed.
I do prefer the old school number 10s. They were the players that made me love football where as today itâs all about being athletic and stat padding. Back in the day they were pure footballers but thatâs why I like Jack Grealish he is a throwback. Imo heâs the best player in the league considering the level of players he has around him and what he does. Iâm a Man Utd fan btw.

@night thrasher Seedorf who won CL 4 times with 3 different teams?! âș
@night thrasher Theres a shout for many. Kaka was next level too. Just seems that Seedorf goes under the radar.
I'd like to see liverpool do this more later in the season. With fabinho and Henderson back in midfield you can play firmino as the ten behind mane, salah and jota
As someone suffering with a shoulder injury the coach made me hurt a bit đđ
I think it is possible to have traditional 10s and at the same time roles they do now days covered by inverting full backs to the center and half space
Great stuff although it isn't really new for a not to have high mobility. not all 10's were stationary like a Riquelme type. there were many that drifted wide or dropped deep as occasions arose.
I'm loving the character development of the teacher with a stick.
Grew up with football in mid 90s and through the 2000s some numbers are very iconic at least for me.
10 : MF/OH
9 : CF (duh!)
7, 11, 17 : SH/WG
2, 3 : LB/RB
4,5,6 : CB

But is the number #10 role (and many others) in modern football become more of a function rather than a position?
No mentioning of Thomas MĂŒller? :/
these folks only know about premier league. Nothing about football that happens elsewhere
He's more of a raumdeuter, explained in a separate video.
Youâll never see a number 10 like Totti again. Most complete player of his generation
messi bro
Bruno Fernandes now plays as a sort of second striker when he is not the one crossing he is in the box at the end of it just like when he scored vs West Brom or Southampton. He's defo not the typical num 10 like Ozil he has a role akin to Dele Alli with Poch
Please do a video on Ä°lkay GĂŒndoÄan đđ
Never thought about this topic in such a way. Amazing insight
Everyone:talking about number 10s
Me everyte the teacher decimates his shoulder: confused screaming
The sport is always evolving, but I still miss the classic #10's such as Zidane and Ronaldinho who would create something beautiful with grace, style and seemingly with minimal effort. Guti's audacious back heels are now a whisper in the wind. Players like Ozil couldn't find a place in the Premier League anymore, and his defence splitting passes just faded away over time.
Nowadays your typical #10 operates either in this more modern backtracking role from the CAM position, or as a False Nine. It's just not the same.
Colombian National Team has 3 #10's. World class. James Rodriguez (Everton), Edwin Cardona (Boca Juniors), Juan Quintero (River Plate). âĄâĄâĄWe love futbolâĄâĄâĄ
My favorite 10 who Is often overlooked is Juan Mata

Could've mentioned Pedro Gonçalves from Sporting CP. He plays RW, but always cuts inside when in Possession. 14 goals in 16 games!
A RW cutting inside is an inside forward/inverted winger.
@@animeshkhare1769 It's not a characteristic of the player, but of the formation and tactics itself. Pedro Gonçalves is a central attacking midfielder, who happens to play RW. I'm comparing him to the likes of James RodrĂguez, and not to Robben (tactics wise and not characteristics).
@@ruisilva2798 fair enough. I haven't seen Pedro play to know enough about him. Your description made me think he was a winger who was cutting inside.

Ah ha yall took my advice on covering the evolution of the ten
As a Chelsea fan, I cannot stress the importance of having a no. 10 in a squad enough. Teams relying on their fullbacks and their crossing and pace, are finding it harder to break down defences this season. Liverpool and Chelsea (the sacking of Frank Lampard) are the biggest examples of it in the PL.

What is the hybrid role of griezmann in world cup 2022. Please explain this
"Joe Devine smells like plops" 4:15 lol
lets listen and type,
Okay so me and my friends have talked about 10s, there is a change in what 10s used to be considered in football. When I was in school we sat at lunch and we asked ourselves who is the classic 10. Immediately we cancelled names like Dele Alli and KDB because they don't necessarily do what we consider a classic 10
When we talk classic 10 we are talking about a passive, ball retaining, redistributor who works to only create obvious opportunities while working his way around midfield to where they see space. The reason why modern 10s which I call 20s are not classic 10 is because they have other parts of the game they value over the parts mentioned.
For example, KDB is a box to box or roaming midfielder. He does not stay mid, or central but goes wherever he desires, however let it be understood KDB does also track back, to the area, living on his well roundedness.
Dele Alli is a second striker, he looks to either occupy channels, or get in behind, and does not concern himself with the buildup all that much, if Dele Alli receives the ball, he aims to progress it upfield
Ozil is also not a classic 10, or at least not the classic type we think off, Ozil drifts for space with or without the ball, rather than actually working to get it back, he's low effort high skill attitude means he often becomes focal point for attacks and his skill in deliver, accuracy and intelligence means he is rather more of the classic 10 of the italians
For classic 10s I found only two players. Christian Eriksen and David Silva, both have an attitude of sharing the ball, both look for more ordinary chances, and both look for space, they gravitate towards the ball and they are passive in nature. The only difference between this two is that David Silva runs with the ball a bit more and Eriksen tries some more longer range passes. This can be personal preference or just tactical philosophy.
The list of 10s I believe are traditional
Bruno Fernandez
Isco
Maddison
Sergio Gomez (young talent)
Mario Gotze
Please make a video on the last real no.10
A Raumdeuter is a chaotic number 10 that makes moves, builds play without the ball. Number 10 mirror image from a parallel universe.
TIFO PLEASE I NEED AN EXPLANATION ABOUT THE UEFA EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE IN THE NEXT VIDEO. THANK YOU
We used to have a creative player siiting just behind the strikers, nowadays we use two creative player, we add one infront of the defence to start the attack!
Messi should be in this video :
- He is the player who creates the most chances for Barcelona
- Still the most goals for Barcelona and assist in a single season
- He drops back for the ball just to deliver a pass to any forward
- Sometimes he would start as a winger and then Griezmann would drift to the wing and Messi to the middle
- On Guardiola he played as âFalse 9â, with Luis Enrique he went back as a right winger but with qualities that still make him a False 9 and could drift to the middle. Then with Valverde and onwards , he is more of a playmaker rather than a goalscorer.
