I thought that when researching my family. One g g g grandfather stayed in England and his brother went to the US. If he'd gone too i might have been born in the US.... Or not at all 🤔
The brother that stayed probably did so because he thought that staying was the secure thing to do, to continue what their family had done for centuries in the place that they had connections, money, and roots. For decades it seemed the right thing, till it wasn't.
That's the story of security vs following your heart. The thing with security is you never really know how secure it really is until it's broken.
Thanks all for engaging in such an interesting conversation surrounding the often difficult and momentous decisions our ancestors made. I used Ancestry to trace one of my family trees for a college project and found out that on my mother's side, my great-great-grandfather was one of the first settlers of Illinois, back when it was still part of France before the Lousiana Purchase. It was....wild to learn that my family had been in the US that long.

@Cedar & Pezhuta I would say, partially, that it was not their fault. Meaning that most of the native americans were killed by illnesses brought by europeans. This is why people are banned to go to places like Sentinel Island.

I cried during the part about her great-grandfather moving alone all alone with nothing I learned that my great-grandpa went through Ellis island from Ireland alone at 19 in 1925, the reason was he wanted to have his 9 younger sibling have a better life and not starve (my great-great grandparents were very poor potato farmers) and I cried because his selflessness possible saved his entire family, and I’m so grateful he together risk because who could of knows what would have happened.
I have genocide on both sides of my family tree Jewish & Native American. There are literal branches on my family tree that are missing. When I saw that as a child when my mother was researching it I wept bc they didn't even stand a chance against the evil that was happening. I hope this never happens again.
We have another one coming soon here in the U.S., except it will be done by our own government, the Democrats, against all Americans.

My great-grandparents were killed in Auschwitz and my grandfather and his brother escaped when they were young boys with one other guy. I remember as a kid looking at my grandfather's arm and seeing a weird tattoo with digits on it, I didn't understand what that was as a kid and never asked, my grandfather never spoke about his parents and their documents were burnt. Now, we have no idea who they were and unfortunately, I can't afford this kind of investigation to find out who my family is.

This is unfortunately such a common story for Jews. In my own family, through 23and me, I found that my great grandfather ended up on the Russian side...and the rest of the family that stayed in Poland perished except one that ended up in Chigago. It's haunting to read names of people with your mother's maiden last name and caues of death is "perished in Holocaust" (murdered would be the term I'd use more accurately.)
My grandmother's family had a similar story to Scarlett's, with some of them coming to the U.S. during the pogroms and others going to Europe. Those who went to Europe were all swept up in the Holocaust, but two cousins survived. They escaped a work detail and hid in the forest and joined a band of resistance fighters. Your comment caught my eye because of Chicago. In the 1980s my grandmother was in Chicago on a visit and a cab driver picked her up. My grandmother loved to ask people about their stories. He began to tell her his story and - - well, one thing lead to another in this conversation - - and it turned out that he was one of her surviving cousins. I guess it was like 23andMe, analog version. It was such an incredible thing, though. Anyway, just thought I'd share that. I wish I knew more about my family's history. Anyway, all the best. -JK

Perished sounds like what food does when it expires. Not what happened to our ancestors, who were MURDERED. I guess it is a way to white wash the past for some. Did you ever know the one of your family that ended up in Chicago? My mom and dad's mothers and their families escaped from Russia as well. My dad's dad's family came from Manchester and my mom's dad's family escaped from Poland at a very young age.

I think it's amazing that we found we have some "relatives" in the US, as we didn't think we did. Even more so, only me, my father, and brother did dna testing- my mom refused, but interestingly, we found the relative on my mom's side!
There is a film called Avalon which resonates with my family.
I cane a from a big Polish family that immigrated from Poland, & 2 of my uncles had Americanized their last name & the rest of that family had disagreed with the 2 brothers
causing a rift in the family, the same had happened in that film.
I remember the shame my paternal grandfather had felt.
He was a proud man it was the name he was born with & the pride he had.
In the leading male character him & his family expressed the sane story line as my immigrant family had.
My point is if you get a chance watch this film, it shows some of the same struggles that families faced at that time .
Its a wonderfully written story/film. I cry everytine I have watched it.

I am so appreciative of the work Dr. Gates does. How he displays such a respectful and understanding demeanor while his clients go through the sad process of taking it all in speaks to his humanity and dignity. I will always hold him in high esteem!

I knew a couple who survived the camps, they still had the tatoos. They were the most alive and happy people i have ever met, they seemed to enjoy every day and gave thanks for it.

Such family stories in Poland have everyone since the 18th century when we were enslaved by Prussia, Austria and Russia.

I cried with Scarlett. The same thing happened to my mother's, mother's family, but I do not know the outcome. My grandmother married an Iowa farmer and had six children. I know that her family name was popular in Lodz, Poland, where there were so many people brutally murdered and often buried alive. This whole thing was never spoken of in my family. I guess it was just too painful, but I am quite certain some of my family died there, out of the members left behind. So, I felt Scarlett's tears in my own eyes for the same reasons.

Im encouraging Jewish people to go back to Israel its a beautiful country with so much good food! If only I can live there I will but Im not Jewish only by heart.
My mother's side of the family also lived in Lodz! you should look them up in Yad Vashem or maybe even ask your family, I grew up hearing the stories about my great grandparents who survived the camps, and the stories of the ones who didn't, and I think it would be so sad if I didn't know of their stories and struggles. it's learning your own history.
Hear this all you who watch. This is the story that happened to MANY families. I feel for Scarlett. I admire her strength and resiliency.
I have a copy of Dr. Gates' book (though I have yet to read it), and had the privilege of listening to him speak at my alma mater over a decade ago. I also think it's quite interesting to know that had Ms. Johansson's great-grandfather stayed in Poland, we might not have been graced with her presence as an actor or person.
Lastly, I'd like to share a tiny bit of my own family history. My maternal great-grandfather (mother's mother's father) left Northern Ireland and came to Philadelphia in the early 1900s, but was so homesick that he wanted to go back to his wife and three children (the fourth and eldest had died from diphtheria). Eventually, my great-grandmother, great-uncle, and two great-aunts came over to the U.S., and the family settled in North Philadelphia, with four more children being born (one of these children also died from diphtheria). The youngest of these children was my own grandmother, whom people have said I am very much like. I see where I've come from as something to be proud of, and will try to preserve my family history for as long as I can.

Ancestry helped my fiance find my biological mother and father and my half brothers about 5 years ago, 35 years after being put up for adoption and after she spent almost 2 years, with an average of 4-5 hours a day searching every other possible option including petitioning 2 different state agencies in 2 different states and just about every other website and option available..... Within a few months of getting my ancestry results and using them I had my family and finally new who and where I came from, and now I have not only the amazing adoptive family that raised me but also the knowledge of where I come from and why I was given away, but also an amazing relationship with 2 brothers I never knew I had and my mother, thank you ancestry, worth every penny
Family history is such a beautiful (and sacred) experience … it changes hearts, humbles, softens, heals, restores and gives you a sense of belonging. It puts life into perspective.

My grandma's (mom's side) family escaped from Tzarist Russia in 1904 or so. She was about 4 and was one of 9 children to the Catskills, NY. They had nothing, of course, and it was so scary. They worked at a hotel (including my wee grandma). My great grandfather died when he was 26. Funny - my mom called my dad, Marshall, Moishe (nickname). It is a very common Ashkenazi Jewish moniker. I feel a strong connection to my Jewish roots on both sides of my family. Scarlett, your story made me weep.

True story. I found my father, 2011 who i never new. He died as Sonya, transtioned 1989, lived a happy life as a woman, her husband never new. Finding family may not go like you think.

This is what im worried about discovering once im able to break down the brick wall on my Polish immigrant ancestors.
Don't be worried. Feel proud . My ancestors were enslaved their whole lives. We all have to face the music.
As a Polish person, I highly encourage you to do your research! Your ancestors may have had an impact on the events in some way. They might have saved many lives.

I have a very complex family history already and if i find that i have jewish cousins that died in the concentration camps that would just be one more thing to add.

I'll just add that Grójec, the home town of one side of her ancestors, is located just a few miles south of Warsaw. That's probably why her family was moved to Warsaw Ghetto.
What a blessing she is to all of us. I just saw "Black Widow" with my family in a theater Sunday 🎥 for the first time in over a year. The quarantine was hard, there was such 😂 throughout the theater and appreciation for her work. The world is a better place because she's here. I am scared a lot because I have no real relatives left (except my siblings). I have no one who knows our true history, other than the few things I remember from my mom and dad and both grandmas (I was too young). I guess I should try to do the ancestry or something to try to find out some more. It has been bothering me for some time. I especially am bothered because I have been having cognitive problems of late (as a result of illness in the past) and I am afraid I have onset dementia (the beginnings).
My redhead’s family is also Jewish.

I have a German name because my great grandfather changed his name after coming to the USA almost exactly a century ago. I never would have thought I had such a similar background to Scarlett. Sauls story is so emblematic. So much tragedy for so long. RIP Saul.

Found my bio dad ‘s half brother and some relative on anchestry last april of this year and it lead me to finally locate the whereabouts of my biological father. We are in constant communication now and also with the whole family.ancestry did a great job giving me my ultimate wish🥰thank you soo much❤️

I feel so bad for her sad ancestry but I'm glad she's found information.
