Hi, if you wanted to feel at home, 80 miles directly north is my home town Peterborough. East of us is an area called the fens. That land is below sea level and used to be swamp! Its now our main source of crop growing as the soil is so good. Its something that surprised when i first got to Orlando in 93 for the first time. We had the reverse culture shock and got so many weird looks when we walked along international drive as there were no paths! We got the same look in Jay in maine, it was like are you mad. It was just what we were used to. That said we certainly jay walked a few times😂. I loved visiting the USA but ill not get back now due to ill health

Enjoyed this random walk. Congrats on the subscriber count, you popped up in my recommendations so it’s working! Surprised to hear that Leadenhall was the inspiration for JKR’s Diagon Alley, I always thought it was based on The Shambles in York which is in the north of England. Google it, it looks like a film set but it’s a genuine medieval street. Amazing. Cheers!

That big glass building that you walked past looks to be Lloyd’s of London. An ancient insurance company that insures most of the shipping in the world . Even an unassuming building can have a fascinating history. Several films have been filmed inside the building, including James Bond.

It was great to see you wandering through the city, with just a general idea of where you're going, it is a great way to find unexpected delights. I worked in Bishopsgate for many years and loved just wandering about, finding small 500 year old pubs in hidden yards, or Roman ruins in situ next to a local newsagent and so much more, all squeezed in between the gaps of the monolithic glass office blocks. To increase your London trivia knowledge, the London Bridge that was sold to an oil tycoon in the late 1960s was called New London Bridge.
It replaced what is now called Old London Bridge (the one with houses and shops on it, commonly seen as a backdrop in Shakespeare film adaptations). It stood from the beginning of the 1200s until the mid 1800s, which included being partially consumed by flames during the Great Fire Of London. The Old Bridge was incredibly narrow and crowded, and was becoming structurally unsafe, impacted by the increase in both the amount and size of traffic bought on by modernisation. The Victorians built New London Bridge to replace the crumbling one and allowed for the traffic increase, which worked for some time, partially because additional bridges were built during this time, but eventually the bridge needed to be widened again. The much wider Modern London Bridge was designed in the 1960s, and this is when the New London Bridge was sold, and shipped brick by brick to America.
Apologies for the short novel, but I love the history of London and can get carried away. You can also probably tell I've been on a few city walks.
I will say that as far as aesthetics are concerned., America got the better side of the deal by a long way.

Now I’ve got to look up the Balloon Museum in London, which I’d never heard of before. This was an excellent walk, and so interesting. Thank you.
It relates to inflatable or balloon art, not hot air balloons, which is what I imagined it to be.
When my husband and I lived in Wiltshire, we were driving back from somewhere at night, right in the countryside (near Old Sarum; a prehistoric site), and these huge coloured inflatable moon and stars slowly inflated (and then deflated again) from behind a hillock. My husband was so shocked that he nearly drove into the side of the road. We just had to stop and go to look, and it was such a surreal experience, but oh so beautiful.

Nobody is going to bother you if you're drinking alcohol while walking along the streets of London unless you're being rowdy or appear unable to look after yourself. It's not permitted on public transport but even there you'll often be ignored unless you do something to draw attention to yourself. Changing subject, the wise thing is to look both ways when crossing any road whatever the signs say; especially now we face the silent menace of e-bikers and e-scooterists' self-entitlement to proceed almost as the crow flies.

Those posts are probably just for parking control and you can really drink anywhere if you are not causing a nuisance. Some areas do have a public space area where drinking is forbidden but that is usually to counter antisocial behaviour. They are not always enforced unless you are drunk.
