  • This was quite a piece of work. The old tree was dead and needed to go. Now a new red maple tree is planted.

Nice work! I used a stump grinder on a maple tree and a huge pine tree. The rental center said "You used it on a pine tree? How did that work out?". I said "Great". He said they had a lot of customer complaints about pine tree stumps. I said "I watched a youtube video and it showed to take slow sweeping passes from the left to right and back again or it will JUMP and JUMP if you take too big a swipe". He laughed and looked it up and said he was going to show that to customers before they rented one. I rented it for $150 for half a day and it did a great job. I got quoted $600.

I know. You can tell he was probably out of his element, but he persisted and got it done in a pretty efficient manner, and the results speak for themselves. He got it done. Btw, I always assumed using the term "Sawzall" as an umbrella term for all reciprocating saws was mostly a regional thing where I'm at. Apparently everyone calls them that, like Q-Tip/cotton swab. lol

On a much smaller scale, I recently cut down a twelve foot mature Japanese maple using hand tools. The stump is presenting a problem. I really don’t want to rent a stump grinder but I may be forced to do so.

Sawzalls vibrate too much. Just use a small chainsaw and maybe gloves, boots, helmet, chaps. Very skilled tree fellers end up in the emergency rooms. Never ever cut from a ladder. Never get nonchalant while bucking especially in tennis clothes.

This guy has no idea how to use a chainsaw safely - please do NOT emulate him!
@5:33 that's a great way to incur serious head and neck damage and just poor technique
@6:33 Never cut through wood one-handed like that, kickback from a chainsaw is real and dangerous. Use both hands on the bar when cutting.
After removing the top foliage and leaving the trunk, that's the time to drop it safely from the base, then buck it up on the ground. Cutting it into short lengths vertically in place like that is stupid if there's no need.

Never thought I'd see a tree like that taken down with a tiny sawzall. When you tried to pull the stump with that strap I nearly blew my top. You could have done it with the proper rigging, there are a lot of videos on how to rig something like that, but nowadays with modern stump grinders, it's safer and only takes one piece of equipment.

i've watched a lot of tree pulling vids. many people are very happy with burning the stump. for me that's just not an option. but some people are more cavalier about fire. i know down south whole fields are set on fire at the end of harvestt. that's just the way some people do it.
so what's the other options? pouring epsom salt into holes drilled in the stump. that's gotta take a long time. blasting powder. we used to could buy blasting powder at a hardware store. anyway, it really wasn't an option next to his house. big big grinder. oh yeah!
when i saw you pull up with that big grinder in tow, i thought , i want him on my team. i really like it when someone has a job to do and pulls out all the stops to get it done. so many young men nowadays act like women. they look strong and healthy, but they're just worthless.

If your cutting from a ladder you had better be tied to the tree, if the ladder gets struck you say in the tree. A saftey harness and rope would allow you to do that.

Wanting to save money getting a tree taken out if fine, but only if the proper tools and safety gear are used. Using the ladder to get up in the tree is fine as long as the ladder is secured to the trunk of the tree. Proper clothing and footwear is also important, especially steeltoed shoes and chainsaw chaps.
Accidents occur in the blink of an eye, and this tree removal was an accident waiting to happen. Fortunately no recorded accident happened during this job.
