    The jazziness of the song stems from guitarist Randy Bachman (who later formed Bachman Turner Overdrive) having skipped high school classes in Winnipeg to take lessons from jazz great Lenny Breau, who lived down the street. One technique that Breau was known for was his use of "harp harmonics" where you mix harmonics and regular notes together to make harp-like scales and passages. Singer Burton Cummings often sings Guess Who songs on Ringo's All Star Band tours. The "Wheat" in the album title refers to them being a band from the Canadian prairies, known for wheat farming.

    Canned Wheat is a take on canned heat or sterno. It reflects a big part of western Canada, wheat. They’re from the west. At any rate, the Guess Who helped our Canadian music on the map internationally and opened the door for many other Canadian artists. Enjoyed your review.

    Burton Cummings was such a master of many genres, in this, you get to experience him scatting with a perfect flow and ease, Then, he jumps on the flute seamlessly. I love him on piano as well. You don't get to see many artists this well-rounded and enduring. He has the ability to give me goosebumps to this day. I think I might have been 7 years old when this hit the airwaves back then. My brother and sisters were so much older than me that I was exposed to so many different sounds growing up and am grateful for the chance to have lived it in real-time.

    A little Steve Howe "Clap". LOL! That almost made me spit sweet tea all over my keyboard and monitor. But I totally understand what you're saying.
    Burton Cummings actually had to learn tp play the flute just for this song. He already played saxaphone, so it wasn't as difficult as it may sound, but it's still somewhat impressive.
    Definitely my favorite Guess Who song. Smooth and jazzy. And Cumming's vocals, just perfect.

    "Laughing" was on the flip side of this 45 rpm when first released. It was also a mega hit for the group and sent them on their way. The Guess Who's rhythm section of Garry Peterson (drums) and Jim Kale (bass) are the glue that held this band together (musically) in my opinion. Always tight and allowed Randy and Burton to do their thing.

    This genre of music is called Bossa Nova. It became popular in the late 50s, early 60s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the Guess Who nailed it. :)

  • @KevinRCarr
    @KevinRCarr Před 8 měsíci +6

    "How did this not reach #1?" Well, you see, it was the late 60s, as great as this is there was a ton of good music charting all over the radio and in the record stores, competition for chart positions was tough. We had no idea just how spoiled we were, at the time, it just seemed ordinary for there to be what is, from the perspective of now, an extraordinary amount of quality music being recorded and played over the airwaves.

    This amazing song came out in the Summer of '69, right after the moon landing and my 16th birthday! I got my driver's license and my first car on my Birthday, July 19. I remember riding around in my car and this song would come on, and I would be singing at the TOP of my lungs! I can almost feel the hot summer air as I'm cruising around with all 4 windows down, blasting the radio!

But there are MANY great Guess Who songs to pick from, of course, and I won't list them here. This is the song that fans use to counter that all the Guess Who were only known for were simple pop rock tunes like "American Woman". IMO it's got a strong Spirit vibe. And yes, that outro has Steve Howe's DNA all over it. But I chalk this up to two guitarists drinking from the same well of inspiration. It's just interesting to hear someone else so deeply steeped in that style of guitar in the late 60's when everyone was going down the blues path. It makes me want to hear more Randy Bachman outside of the big BTO hits.

      I saw the remade Guess Who driving around in a convertible at the Lake Riviera pop festival (I don't know the proper name of the festival but it was held at the artificial lake). The seemed to be wasted out of their heads and they were singing "We're all f'ing wasted, we're all f'ed up" over and over with the chorus being the spelling of f'ed up followed by a call and response of "f'ed up" repeating. Bachman was the moderating influence on the band and once he was gone, Cummings and the rest seemed to party even harder.

    The prairie region of Western Canada was famous for it's wheat production, both in quality and quantity, at the time the album was recorded. The naming follows on the heels of their previous album "Wheatfield Soul" which featured their hit single "These Eyes" which happened to have a Motown sound.
    Bachman is an amazing guitarist and Cummings is an amazing vocalist. Peterson and Kale were both solid on drums and bass respectively. The group had been together with this lineup for years which helped as well. There are still a lot of small gems in their portfolio. At some point in time you might want to consider "Friends of Mine" off the "Wheatfield Soul" album where they seem to be doing their best imitation of The Doors though the lyrics are... well ... not as good as some of their other work. Stream of consciousness was a popular thing then iirc and it shows.

    Hi JP. DP from UK, where it's Guy Fawkes Day today. And this could be a Song For Guy, as Mr Fawkes came undone, after failing to blow up Parliament in the 17th century, and he met a fiery end. So we celebrate by putting a 'Guy' on a bonfire and letting off fireworks. But what are we celebrating? Guy's intention, or that he failed? As for The Guess Who, I'm loving this soft/lounge jazz, and especially the guitar and flute. Very different from American Woman, which is the only song I previously knew.
    P.S. my song ref Song For Guy is by Elton John.

    'Ole Audiophile to JP: An interesting footnote to The Guess Who is that Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive was originally the guitarist of The Guess Who on the album Wheatful Soul. Band management told Randy he could not be a practicing 'go to your church every sunday' christian and a rock star at the same time with all the touring responsiblities of the band. Randy chose to quit & start-up his own act rather than knuckle under, then found his own way of doing things. That's the story I heard anyhow...
