  • Like many people, I'm actively engaged in monitoring the campaigns for the U.K.'s General Election due to take place on 4th July 2024.
In this 'Reflections and Rants' monologue, I attempt to clarify the choices I (and everyone else) have/has to make in selecting their preferred local candidate and governing party. To help me choose, I've come up with 10 RULES FOR POLITICIANS, which lay out the minimum criteria for politicians seeking my endorsement.
There's a longer version of this video, which includes some commentary on party leaders including the election favourite Labour's Kier Starmer, the Conservatives' Rishi Sunak, and Nigel Farage, the leader of 'Reform U.K.' If you can stomach more of this, here's a link to the longer version of this video: • THOUGHTS ON THE U.K. G...

Sir David. Greetings from Canada. Great vid (as per usual) I love your rants , your bike rides, your music vids. Your situation (election) somewhat and mostly mirrors our political malaise here in Canada. Don't even get me going on USA. Sadly a great country in rapid decline politically. Love your top 10! I too see myself as an unattached voter. In Canada we have 4 distinct parties in the House of Commons. The best federal governments we have ever elected were/are either a left leaning Conservative majority or a right leaning Liberal majority, both with a social bent (if you get my drift!) Lastly - your t-shirt - Castrol oil! That is what we need to force feed our politicians, castrol oil for the body......until we can cleanse their minds of all the s**t from them and start fresh with your top 10 embedded into them. Keep on keeping on!! PS don't be late picking up your daughter and friends. Been there - done that!!

That's so kind Pat, thanks. As you know, I'm always a bit apologetic in posting videos like this, because most people who trip over my videos don't come for the politics/current affairs, but it's gratifying to know that some people make the time to give them a watch/listen.
There's a few people over here drawing parallels between our GE2024 and what happened in Canada when the conservative numbers collapsed some years ago. They cite the Reform UK Party as having the potential to change politics here for some time to come. I'm not convinced myself; I think under our system that a helluva tall order. Regardless, it's clear that most of us, or both sides of the pond, prefer centrist parties, with the occasional pendulum swing leftwards and rightwards.....but not too far. The scary thing for me these days is ideologues and their authoritarian overreach, and I think we take our eye off the motives of our political class at our peril.

Hi David! If you could hear my 95 year old perfectly sane mother comment on the current world situation, the entertainment would be endless. Outside of politics, she was very disappointed at Pat Sajak retiring from Wheel of Fortune. I love your top 10 list of character traits to move an agenda. ✌️

The current state of politics in the UK is such a mess that it might take generations to understand and unravel.
Certainly it has not been helped by the internal conflict within the current government (as a result of Brexit) leading to them to be more interested in that battle than running the country.
In my opinion they don't deserve to be continue in Government.
But then the alternative under Starmer is equally underwhelming, and I fear that should/when it gains power, it will just devolve into a revenge trip that no one will benefit from, especially those currently most in need.
What people need is an effective government that gets things done - and that doesn't mean just throwing money at a problem, but coming up with something that actually works.
Bizarrely enough, this was actually what the orange man got right in many, not all, cases - relative peace in the middle east, no new wars, increasing detente with N Korea, a fairly prosperous economy. But at least he had a vision and the will to get things done, and actually made an attempt to do so. I am not saying we should have our very own DJT, but we need to find someone who has that vision and charisma to take us forward for the betterment of all.
    All IMHO.
    TL:DR we're all fucked

Sobering thoughts, all. Hard to be optimistic in these times, especially with the choices on offer. I suspect the winner in this election will be apathy.
