    There are several things you can do to mange your ferrets natural smell.

    Also, it’s I important to know that ferrets have scent glands throughout their body that produce a musty odor. Even when a ferret is spayed or neutered, they will still have a musty smell. Ferrets that are not spayed or neutered will have a stronger smell when they are in heat/during mating season.
    Here are a few tips for reducing ferret smell:
    1. Keep the litter box clean
    2. Try using a Pet Genie to dispose of dirty ferret litter
    3. Wash your ferrets bedding regularly

    Have you ever tried an oatmeal bath? I never use soap with mine and use an oatmeal bath maybe once a year or if they get super dirty outside digging in dirt. I love the oatmeal bath because it doesn't dry out their skin as bad and doesn't take all their oils out of the skin so they are less itchy afterwards.

      FerretBiz I have not done oatmeal with the ferrets. I do give my little dog oatmeal baths, she has really sensitive skin. But I am definitely gonna try it with the ferrets now! Thanks for the suggestion!!

      @@miss_daisy4925 Might I suggest just using a rag to wipe it each time instead of a monthly bath. A bath that often can be irritating to the skin.

    I have been looking into fostering one or two (likely two) ferrets for several days now. I've always wanted a ferret ever since I saw their cute slinky like bodies and little faces. Thanks for the information! I've been doing a lot of research on ferrets and this video really helped me come up with a plan to help make sure my ferrets down stink the whole house up. I am 17 and my mom had the impression that ferrets stink and would make the whole house smell. and boy do I have something to talk about!

    I’m from the uk and use a mixture of a puppy pad and eco cat litter which is made from corn husks. It is working out really well. Love your videos I’ve learnt lots from you and have used a few of your sewing ideas as well. I’m a fairly new ferret owner as I rescued them from someone who wasn’t able to look after them as well as they should. I love them to bits.

    Hi @ferret tails, I was wondering, since your ferrets have a ferret room, what is your set up as far as ways for them to pee and poop? Do you use pee pads or are your ferrets only using their litterbox? My ferrets only use one corner of their room and one of them is quite particular when it comes to avoiding the litter in their cage altogether xD.

      I get it from couple places. I always get paper fragrance free paper pellets though. If I get it from Petco or Petsmart I buy it in the cat section. If you get it from the small animal section they over charge for it, but it’s the exact same litter. www.petsmart.com/cat/litter-and-waste-disposal/litter/exquisicat-naturals-multi-cat-paper-pellet-cat-litter---unscented-low-dust-low-tracking-natural-5219991.html

    You said you bought your ferrets at a pet store. I've read buying them at a pet store like Petco is wrong. Adoption is a better option

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  Před měsícem

      I bought my first two ferrets in 2018 from a pet store. Prior to knowing just how horrible Marshall’s farms is (they are the breeder that provides ferrets to US pet stores. And while all of my ferret are Marshall ferrets, the ones that I have after the first two I purchased, I rescued or took from people who could no longer care for them. I talk more about this in some of my other videos.
      Marshalls is basically the equivalent of a puppy mill for ferrets. They spay and neuters entirely too young, which results in significant health issues for their ferrets when they get older, such as adrenal disease, insulinoma and other cancers.
      In the U.S. the only way to not support Marshall’s is by buying from one of the very few private breeders. The wait lists can be very long and the price can be a bit more than the pet store but the ferrets that come from the small private breeders are normally much healthier and live longer because they are not spayed and neutered too young and they come from a better genetic bloodline.
      Sadly adopting them doesn’t necessarily make it better because indirectly you’re still supporting Marshall Farms, and as much as it would be nice for everyone to not buy a pet store ferret. The truth is the private breeders in the U.S. can’t keep up with the demand for ferrets without risking the health of their own ferrets. Which is why the likelihood of ever stopping a breeder like Marshall’s is slim. That’s not to say that I agree with how Marshall’s does things, I just choose not to spend my time judging and lecturing people on the choice to buy a ferret from the pet store while knowing the options are so limited. I wish there were more options for people to choose from, but sadly there’s not.
      I think the more important things to focus on is making sure people understand the kind of care ferrets need and the time and expenses that go into them because sadly to many of the ferrets sitting in rescues right now are there because people didn’t have all the information on what goes into owing them.
      The ferret community can be a great place, but there is a small group of people who who have no ability to look at situations from more than one side or who believe their way is the only way and the right way instead considering that what works for one owner may not work for another.
      I’m not about the all of that. I am here to share my experience, my mistakes and my support. No one in this community is perfect and all of us have had a learning curve. Nothing can prepare you for ferrets but ferrets. Research is super important but if they’re being honest, even people who researched before bringing their babies home will tell you they’ve made mistakes.

    Does these tips get rid of the smell or just make it smell less bad?

    • @FerretTails
      @FerretTails  Před 3 lety

      The tips just reduce the smell. I personally don’t know of anything that will 💯 get rid of the smell, although some people may disagree with me and some people will say they don’t smell at all. Honestly, they have a musky odor and over bathing them will only make it worse. I have found keeping their area and litter boxes clean is the best way to reduce the smell.

      ꕥ A l l i e ꕥ a bath will help them smell better, but if you bathe them to much it can hurt their skin. I bathe my ferrets 2-3 times a year and a lot of ferret owners recommend bathing them in an oatmeal bath.
