A little thing that you're missing here is that originally the six chaos emeralds from South Island where different chaos emeralds from the seven on West side Island. Meaning originally there was far more chaos emeralds as they seemed to be magically linked to the islands themselves. And the Master emerald was the emerald of Angel Island which is why it could float.

The actual back story as far as I know is from a story book I had as a kid,
Doctor Ovi Kintobor was a scientist with his lab inside the hills which sonic accidentally burrowed into, he doctor was researching how to seal the evil (energy?) in the world into different special emeralds which he calls CHAOS emeralds (the chaos stands for something but I forgot) and his lab and machines are powered by gold rings.
So after sonic became friends with the doctor, the doctor developed a special treadmill for sonic and shoes (low friction, I know it sounds silly that's what's in the story) the shoes is to prevent sonic setting the lab on fire since he moved too fast, and the treadmills allow him to reach sonic speed turning his fur blue(yea blue isn't his original colour according to the book)
So one day sonic found a rotten egg in the fridge while looking for food, he then passes the rotten egg to the doctor, but that moment of lapse in his calculation led to the machine overloading, causing a reverse flow of evil energy from all the chaos emerald into him as he is holding the egg at the same time turning him into doctor Ivo Robotnik, the resulting explosion sent all the gold rings everywhere and scattered all the emeralds..

Even though the Death Egg doesn't have rings, storywise Sonic actually does have rings
there are rings in the death egg but you have to use debug mode
TravisWolfy But the layout has none. Debug mode is used for creating objects. If Death Egg's layout has no rings, it means that Death Egg has no rings. Even the Final Zone in S1 and the Super Eggman Robo stage in S3 have rings available in debug, but nonpresent in the layout.

FINALLY! I WATCHED THIS YEARS AGO AND THEN FORGOT E NAME OF IT AND AFTER YEARS OF SEARCHING I HAVE FINALLY FOUND IT AGAIN!
1. The seventh Emerald was discovered by Sonic during the second game, which he used, with the power of the others to become Super Sonic.
2. Eggman realised he couldn't take the world using brute force as he did in Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles, and decides to think more strategically, by taking Little Planet as a base of operation.
3. Eggman recovered Metal Sonic from Little Planet right after Sonic CD, as seen in Sonic 4: Episode Metal.
4. The handheld games aren't strictly canon. :P

Back in like 6th grade (now graduated as of 2022), my English teacher showed us this video to teach us about chronological order. She was a great teacher (and a sonic fan, but I didn't discover that till years later unfortunately)

No, remember Sonic 2 being quite differet. It was Tails doing most of the hero stuff. He even fell on a pit of spikes on Mystic Forest(name?) Zone, and refused to use his ability to fly, instead constantly recapturing his lost rings until he ran out of time.

Now that sonic CD has tails its possible to explain that sonic CD is taking place before sonic 2 and that in CD sonic and tails basicly hadn't decided to team up yet, and also metal sonic could have survived the race with sonic and terrorised stardust speedway before being short wired and put out by freedom fighters of little planet to explain why stardust speedway is set in the bad future in sonic 4, I don't know but sega should take a look at the franchise as a whole and produce a timeline presented in a book with all explanations for the plot holes and other stuff,
For the version Taxman made he just added Tails and the Sonic 2 spindash just to make it better. Same with the PAL/Japan and the American NTSC music.
Robotniks Mean Bean Machine yes still a problem with that theory is the metal sonics but i guess eggman has been som stressed since sonic 2 that he havent put up the time and rescources to build a 1.1 metal sonic robot with the same abilities

Someone make a comic about the first 3 games
Here's what I think went down:
1. There was no super form since there were no Emeralds on Little Planet.
2. Eggman made the Death Egg right after his defeat in the first Sonic game.
3. The Metal Sonic in CD is the last one, seeing as the once in Sonic 2 and 3 don't make another appearance, since they were inferior. Plus, after CD Metal Sonic was still in Stardust Speedway, until the events of Sonic 4 where Eggman got him out of there, more or less after Sonic had beaten him.

"Eggman" has always been Dr. Robotnik's name in Japan. The name "Dr. Robotnik" is not accurate. The Sonic the Hedgehog characters originated from Japan, not America or any other country.
Thing is, SEGA decided to make Ivo Robotnik the real name of Dr. Eggman and Eggman as the nickname Sonic and co. gave him when Sonic Adventure came out.

***** True, but ever since Tails' s debut, he has been in pretty much every Sonic game.
One problem i had:
There wasn't anything about Tails' chaos energy machine between 2 and 3. If I'm not mistaken, the story goes like:
At the end of Sonic 2, if you have all of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic falls back down to be rescued by Tails. After Sonic does his little pose besides the plane, the credits roll. After the credits, there is a very small cut scene that lasts for all of 4 seconds which shows the Death Egg crash landing from space and onto Angel Island, followed by a scene of Eggman angrily jumping up and down with eyes peering at him from a nearby bush.
Sonic 3 picks up immediately after Sonic 2, since Sonic and Tails saw the Death Egg crash, they make a beeline for the island, hence why they are still on the plane and Sonic has all the emeralds still, where he flies in and is promptly smashed by Nipples the Enchilada
