    I've had an interesting experience getting through the gate one year. Three years ago, I arrived to Burning Man to pick up my ticket and vehicle pass from the box office. I bought them without any issues. Then had my ticket scanned at the gate only to discover neither ticket and vehicle pass would not scan. They looked at me like I was a criminal trying to trespass. They sent me to D-Lot to settle my issue with them. At D-Lot, I was asked to step out of my car and questioned me about the ticket and where I bought it from. Fortunately, I stayed calm and collected. I've presented my printed email confirmations, credit card receipts, and my ID with my current address that matched my burner profile. They checked everything! Once they confirmed the ticket is legit and legally paid for, the people at D-Lot apologized for the mess up and sent me passed the gate towards the city.
    What happened was that the cashier whom I bought my ticket from at the box office forgot to activate my ticket before handing it to me. Thats why it would not scan. If you are planning on picking up your ticket from the box office. Make sure to have your documents handy just in case any issues might occur.

    Goddamn, burning man seems seriously straight edge. They are going to search you, they have re-education in parking lot D, no glitter, or fireworks, and apparently you are implying no drugs are allowed. I feel like every picture I've ever seen of burning man involved glitter, fireworks, and drugs all at the same time.

    • @leridom
      @leridom Před 6 lety +17

      There are cops there, and if they see you with your drugs it'll be a bad time. But cops do not search vehicles at the gate. Cops do not have a presence on the gate at all as this is not permitted by contract, but they do have a presence on gate road, so don't light up a doobie or crack open a beer when you're driving on it. Wear your seat belt, go 5mph, and don't be dumb, you'll be fine.
      Burning man has their own trained volunteer security searching vehicles, they do not search for drugs, nor do they give a fuck about drugs. Fireworks are not permitted for legal reasons, burning man has a fantastic fireworks display during the man burn, and there's so much to do there, you won't miss your fireworks at all. Glitter is an environmental hazard to the Black Rock desert, so it is not permitted, but we aren't searching for glitter. Seriously. We don't have time to fucking search your shit for glitter. BUT if you have a work of art that is covered in glitter and we can see this, we won't let you in with it. You can dispose of it yourself and come back, or we'll get rid of it for you. People wear shit tons of glitter out there, tons. We do what we can to reduce that because of it's negative impact on the natural environment there, but glitter is not a priority. We are primarily looking for stowaways, guns, plants, and shit that causes moop (matter out of place= garbage) like a giant cock sculpture covered in glitter, we would not let that in.
      There is no "re-education" in D-lot. We put you there if you present any sort of issue that will hold up the progress of ingress. If for whatever reason you need extra searching, larger cargo trucks, rv's with hiding stowaways, art cars with no dmv clearance, you brought a dog, whatever the deal, if you aren't easy to process you go to d-lot. This is done for the safety of all. When traffic backs up to the highway, it can become a public hazard. About 50k people arrive Mon-Tue, ingress must go smoothly and quickly all day and night to be safe. D-lot lets us take our time with anomalies, get you sorted out, you don't get re-educated. But if you get sent there, it is likely because you lack info, didn't know something, or you're fucking up and you're gonna get busted, in any case, by virtue of those circumstances you may 'learn something' you didn't know before. But it is not the intention of burning man to teach you this lesson, nay, we would prefer you show up prepared, know what's allowed, and avoid those things that cause us to deny you entry. What kind of gate experience you have is entirely in your hands, really.

If paying is an issue, get a grant, make art, volunteer, there are ways to go for free but you have to try.

      @@leridom Ive had the chance to go for free. I don't like things that pretend to be enlightened yet are more rigid than actual society. I took offence to your attitude as if burning man is you and yours private fiefdom. I am sure you spend all year talking about last year and planning toward next year. It's not that serious.

    • @leridom
      @leridom Před 2 lety

      @@koscashcars I go for free every year, and you're right about how I talk about it all year round and plan for it throughout the year. It's my thing, I make large art, and I'm a legacy volunteer. I'm sure to you this is just, pathetic. But I'm disabled and for me this is what I love to do. I don't get to have much in life, I'm very very poor, I have severe disability issues that impact almost every part of my life so my experience is not going to be like yours too begin with.
      As for them being "enlightened", I really think that's your perception, I don't hang out with anyone who thinks of themselves that way. There probably are people like that present, no doubt, but I don't hang out with them and don't know them. I hang with the builders and makers, we're too busy to give a shit about enlightenment. We're just regular humans who love to build, and there's something really satisfying about creation, I'll thank you to not shit all over that just because you can't understand it.
      As for you thinking that its more restrictive than normal society, upon what do you make that assumption? Have you ever even attended, or are you just saying all of that based on nothing? Because I've found that I do things there that I could never do in society. But then,I have 20 years of experience with it, often spending a couple months there, so my milage is going to take me further than the average participant.
      I'm sorry that you think my attitude is one of the burn belonging to me alone, I never meant to make you feel that way. I do feel very personally connected to that community because I've been involved for 20 years now, some of these folks are family in my life at this point. For me, this is my community and I take it seriously, we hang out all year round. We sit around a fire together, singing, passing a bottle, and being kind for the most part. We're not perfect, we make terrible mistakes, we're just people. I try to grow and change as I learn, I feel that's true of the org as well. I've seen them do it, so I know what they're capable of in both positive and negative ways.
      If you want enlightenment, I feel that such a thing is a temporary situation, not some thing you attain once and keep forever. Just a moment, an epiphany, a peek behind the veil. I think those moments can be had at burning man, but in no way do I endorse any guarantee of that.
      I think it's kind of sad that you are so mad, that you regard my knowledge as offensive, that you judge me and in reality you have no idea, none, about who I am, what I've done, the people I've helped, and the beauty and healing I've shared yet you sure do seem to have a big opinion. Gonna be hard to make friends with that instantly mean attitude you have, your immediate jump to the negative, all these things show where your mind is at and that you lack the ability to imagine something better than you did.

    I can understand the complaints on how it’s changed and maybe becoming unfortunately gentrified; but honestly it doesn’t sound too bad. I mean, keeping people from dying is a good thing and it probably takes a lot to set that up on state land. Having authorities there isn’t so bad too. I mean, if I can feel like I can safely take a free drink or snow cone not potentially laced with LSD, I’ll be happy LoL

    Between combating people who don't respect the environment when they show up and have no intention to, rising popularity bringing new people who fail to assimilate into the environment and the cultures present there or even appreciate it, natural changes in demographics of culture and values carried by different generations of attendees resulting from prolonged success, and organizers having to jump through hoops to get permission to use intended spaces without getting shutdown eventually leads to this overall shift.

    With events that draw larger and larger numbers of people, the percentages of idiots, incompetents, losers and worse increases dramatically. It might be helpful to have, if possible, some sort of station/spot on a road way before entry that almost "pre-qualifies" people in. Guarantee there will still be countless people getting to the entrance who will be turned away due to the above personality traits being unable to comply with the rules, and some unfortunate others who may've just not been sharp enough to obtain their ticket through the proper channel.
    I would absolutely love to go to this, but my lungs don't do sand very well. They need to do something like this in the northeast like Woodstock. In the meantime, I'm grateful for the live feeds.

      Sucks about the sand issue! The playa dust isn't sand like you would get on the beach, but it is an issue for some people.
      I always feel bad that there must be some people that get turned away because they thought they had a ticket but they actually got scammed, it must be such a massive disappointment, especially if they've come from really far away, or if the whole rest of their group have got real tickets.

      You know in my homeland Germany there are many leftish alternative festivals with a strong political message - entering the festival grounds and staying there is completely free, and in addition, nazis and people in far-right unions are not allowed on the premises according to the right of assembly. You will not find losers there but system-critical people who are politically interested and have something to say. Most of the time there are also great bands playing and it makes a lot of fun.
      On the other hand it seems to me that Burning Man is just a festival for rich, privileged partygoers who spend a weekend pretending to be spiritual hippies.

      The appeal in going is the vast platform for expression that is possible there. It is the largest display of art in the world. People work together to create some pretty amazing stuff. Congratulations!!! You must be so excited! Vehicle passes are usually a lot easier to get your hands on than actual tickets so you could try checking out eplaya or the ticket thread on the burning man subreddit to see if anyone has one for sale on there. Also you might be able to find a ride share or something on there. Alternatively there the burner express bus which is a great choice as you can get water tickets there so you don't need to drag all your water with you, you just need to bring some containers to hold the water you pick up once you're out there.
      I've heard people have pretty good luck with hitchhiking (I've never hitchhiked to BM) so that might be an option (I'm not sure how risky it would be though, it'd suck to not get picked up and have no alternative way of getting there)!

      Burning Man is not a good place for dogs. There are a lot of professional firework shows and loud noises in general. There are a lot of people on bikes. The playa (dried lake bed) where Burning Man takes place is highly alkaline. The soil would dry and crack the pads on dog's feet. It's hot and dusty. A water bowl left uncovered would turn into a murky, highly alkaline mess within minutes. People can wear dust masks and goggles, dogs can't. Some people don't clean up after their dogs. Some people don't do a good job of keeping their dogs on a leash.
      Guide dogs are allowed under some circumstances, but strict guideline must be followed to ensure the safety and welfare of the animals and participants.
      Some law enforcement dogs are present as well. But they are to be kept inside an air-conditioned vehicle unless they are in performance of their duties. Even then, they are supposed to be wearing protective footwear.

      Forgive me, but don't airplanes have identifiers on the airplane itself? Burning man has an airport, they can see and are tracking your aircraft. If you dump sky divers onto the event, sure, those people might get away with getting in. More likely the rangers will be radioed to pick them up. Be assured that the person flying the plane will get some heavy fines and possible loss of license to fly. BLM will enforce that. I find it very unlikely that you would find a pilot to do this for you.
      The entirety of the event is enclosed with a trash fence and patrolled by technology and people 24/7. But it is 7-square-miles of land inside so yeah, plenty of room... if you cross the fence and start wandering around outside the event, you'll get picked up by security or turned around. They won't let you enter or exit outside of gate road, which is regulated.
