    Hey Graham! Dentist/dental specialist here-
    To answer your question: why dont more dental students take military scholarships?: there are very very few made available each year. I attempted to receive one (filled out the paperwork, got the background check, went through the physical) but all the spots were gone by the time my file was put together by the recruiter.
    The pros are definitely financial (no tuition which can be anywhere between $200k and $400k and even pay during dental school) but the cons include inability to chose where or how you practice or whether or not you can specialize (and some specialties.... not mine lol... pay significantly more than the general dentist)

      I even tried again in my specialty residency as the army had positions posted on job websites for my specialty. Twice, I put together "a packet" (application) only to find out the position didn't actually exist and it was an error.
      I still think it's a great option for those that are able to do it! It just didn't work out for me (but other outlets did, and all is well that ends well- ended up in my dream job!)

      not sure about Switzerland but in the US, a Phd student is a student. Graham calling them minimum wage workers is not appropriate. Their tuition is covered (usually), which is worth a lot. They are taking classes first, then still studying under the tutelage of an advisor. Their output goes to the bank of academic knowledge and is not directly used for profit the way research in a company might.

    • @samuel.andermatt
      @samuel.andermatt Před 2 lety

      @@a55tech In Switzerland you first get a Masters degree before doing a PhD. You also take some lectures during the PhD but very few. You assist to a certain extent with teaching and you make academic research. I mean there is public funding for academic research and I don't see why a PhD should not get a regular salary for teaching and academic research like the professor gets a salary for teaching and academic research.

    • @a55tech
      @a55tech Před 2 lety

      @@samuel.andermatt In the US there is a position called post-doc for more normal salaries after they graduate. It's kind of like a residency for doctors, a transition period with multiple exit opportunities. That would be more aligned with what you're describing.
      But while a student in the US, they are students themselves and their tuition is covered or waived by their PhD program. In the end, they are not considered workers because they're still learning the tools of the trade and they need supervision. The total value of the money taken from research funding to have them is usually well above average salary.

      @@riftech57 that's just not true, man. You make less in the military than civilian. In higher earning specialties like ortho/derm/ophtho you make WAY less in the military.
      Every military branch, army included, may make you do 1-2 years of primary care before residency because the demand for it is so high. It is much harder to match into your specialty of choice in the military.

    This was truly inspiring. I grew up in a low income household where i was taught the value of education and hard work. I ended up on a full ride scholarship to get my electrical engineering degree. While in my sophomore year a navy recruiter told me about a officer program where you have a job lined up after graduating. I passed all the tests and interviews to get in and was set to be a nuclear engineering officer after graduating. I got active duty pay with a E6 paygrade while in school that came with all benefits of active duty and a job as a officer after finishing school.
    Unfortunately after i graduated i ended up developing a autoimmune disorder which resulted in me being medically discharged a short time into my officer contract.
    It was definitely one of the worst times in my life having to manage my disability and not having a job for a bit. Thankfully i got in touch with some recruiters for civilian engineering jobs with the military. Im now a R&D engineer for the airforce working on telecommunications systems.

    I wanted to join the military. My step dad had other plans. Let's just say that if I would've joined, I would've been homeless until I was able to head off to bootcamp. My two youngest brothers had a similar encounter, but because everyone by that point had moved out, they were able to leave home and have places to crash. My only option was in another state. And yes, I think he would've kicked me out because he had no qualms about doing insane things like that. I was 18, it was my decision. I didn't have to tell him I guess. Just one day go "whelp, I'm outta here. Off to bootcamp, see ya."

    Late on this, but going into the military to pay for school, or at least dental school, is extremely competitive. My class graduated with 123 students and as far as I know only three students got the scholarship. Plus you have to serve for some set of time after + do basic training etc.
