★What is the name of the tool you are Checkering with?
→I used DEM-BART checkering tool 18LPI. Made in USA.
★What are you doing in the first half?
→OPINEL has to be fixed for checkering. Checkering is difficult if it is not fixed. jig for that.
It is made with things that are easily available at Japanese DIY stores.

@BØRGE ODK For example, the tool is very expensive if you only checkering it once. But if you check it repeatedly, it's like buying a frying pan to fry eggs every morning.

My father used to be an old world gunsmith. One day he sent me a full set of these type tools he got from Brownells. He said that he bought them thinking how much fun it would be to checker a rifle stock.......... Until he tried it! He sent them to me because he didn't have the patience to this type work. I worked with them a bit and finally finished my first rifle. I custom build a national match M-14 and wrap-around checkered the grip and fore-grip. It was a beautiful rifle. I sold the rifle a few years later and have regretted it ever since.
Seeing this video, I tracked down those files and a small Opinel knife and I believe I see a checkered knife in my future.

    • @barneycripps2863
      @barneycripps2863 Před rokem +1

Not sure but I think maybe there's a couple of reasons. I think the blade clamps act like a depth stop so the depth of cut is consistent. The other thing I thought is that sometimes if you cut with the grain using a chisel, the wood can tear out along the grain. Not certain about any of that but I have seen other people do this kind of thing with a toothed blade instead of a chisel. Especially on gun stocks.

    • @nmtdiy
      @nmtdiy  Před rokem +2

      I think that's probably right.
There are several types of tips.
Tip angles of 60°, 75°, and 90° are available.
      Process as in steps 1-3.
It is difficult to buy in Japan, so it is processed with a 90° tip, but step1-3 is actually desirable.
There is also a tool that allows you to engrave two lines at once.
This tool has a constant depth and allows you to carefully carve straight lines.

      I used DEM-BART checkering tool 18LPI.
I made my own checkering gauge. but hard to find in Japan.

As I write this, $85US. If you can find one used for sale, probably one-tenth that price -- but shopping does cost.

A Lathe would be totally useless for this work, you need an angled cradle, as used here for the perfect control of the job being chequered.

@@nmtdiy A Lathe would be no good for this work, it is for turning material round.

Very nice work but personally as a Frenchman of Savoyard origin, I don't find it necessarily useful but more restrictive for cleaning, this knife already having a good grip.
This knife is a classic model (all-purpose), without being the "adventurer" model (for outdoors) or another model for mushrooms, ... I have always used this knife for picnics, walks, meals du midi on site,... It is a fairly good quality knife for a low price.
I greatly appreciate the quality of work of the Japanese concerning the various crafts, but for this type of knife and given my use, I prefer marquetry type modifications.

It's an honor to be seen by a French person. thank you.
I also think this knife is good quality for a low price.
There's a reason this knife hasn't changed over the years.
Because it is completed with this shape.
      Checkering is costly and expensive.
This process is unnecessary depending on how you use it.
But I wanted to do checkering. sorry.
Someday I'll try the marquetry as well. Thank you for your good idea.

Checkering is useful for improved grip for wet/greasy hands, as well as those of us with beat up hands from calluses/cuts and cannot hold properly due to smoothed out scarred skin, and adding more tactile feel helps with areas of fingers with uneven nerve damage. Marquetry is just for looks.

Thank you for writing the usefulness of checkering that I couldn't express.
That's right. Checkering has a non-slip effect. I expected it and checkering it.
However, I learned that there are people in the world who do not need non-slip on OPINEL knives.
It seems to be over-spec for its intended use.
It is also interesting to checkering the marquetry. There are only good things.

Small patches of anti-slip tape, punched out of a role using a hole punch, and placed judiciously on the handle? Such tape is typically used on stair steps, near the edge, to minimize bum-bounces. Seems to be a thin, double-sided tape onto one side of which has been placed a layer of carborundum (or a near equivalent). Removable and re-configurable. _Much_ less expensive than checkering.
