    I too was one of those guys who just had a naturally high sprint (in the 90s), but I was able to take it to another level by doing sprint interval days (10+ sprints) and racing track at So Cal velodromes. Racing the fixies on track forces you to develop near max power from the saddle and at higher RPMs, better handling, and more comfort with touching/bumping other bigger riders which i found made me a better and safer crit racer/sprinter.

      This type of rider only suits for short crit. He’s heavy, not aero and less endurance. You cannot compare him to pro who trained for 15years its really really too far from him. That power suits for velodrome sprinter which most of them doesn’t have that huge endurance but can sprint for more than 2500watts

  • @ThePaulRobertDavis
    @ThePaulRobertDavis Před rokem +28

    Big boy watts for sure! It seems like it's easy for sprinters to get stuck in the mindset of needing more power to win more races. Most of the time, though, it's not their sprint holding them back from more wins, but poor endurance preventing them from getting to the line with a good punch left in the tank. If you're pumping out 1750 watts mid-race, sure dial in your form, but just figure out how to get to the last lap in good position and keep doing on all the endurance work you need to get there fresh. Keep it up dude.

    15 sec: 40%

    EJ, did all of these new max sprint numbers occur after recently upgrading/changing your cranks and power meter? The calibration might be off and shifting the numbers higher. My SRAM Force AXS spider power meter factory calibration measures 9.5% too high. I had to change the offset to match a Tacx Neo 2T trainer, as the auto calibration was not correcting the power measurement. Try borrowing some power meter pedals to confirm the accuracy. Alternatively you just might find out the crank power meter is reading low.
    That being said, your sprint power and sprint power endurance are both exceptional. Plus you have the capacity to put in 1200w efforts repeatedly throughout your races. The results of your sprints speak for themselves!

    Power numbers are what one would expect from a top end sprinter. Super high max wattage and trending down after 5mins to be more average(but still good) at the longer efforts. I'm opposite. Crap sprint(13/14w/kg) but good 20min power relatively (4.8w/kg). Just wish it was 6w/kg though!

  • @niekversteege
    @niekversteege Před rokem

    Did you do a 5 min. effort before your 20 min. FTP test? Siince you're pretty strong in the short efforts you might inflate the 20 min result with your strong anaerobic engine. Crossed my mind because if the relatively large gap between 20-30min power and 1hour power. Would be interesting to see your hour power if you do a dedicated test instead of a crit.

  • @sunshinecycling

    Yes, some people are born with sprinting ability, whether running or cycling. But, yes, you should train it if that's your strength. @@cornishalps9870 He was also light and aero as fuck, hence my focus on w/kg. Greipel did 1850-ish, still doesn't change that EJ's numbers compares to some of the best out there. Arnaud de Lie did 961 over 15 seconds in the Giro to beat Mads Pedersen the other day. This was after a short stage lasting 3 hours and 40 minutes.
      Also, I never implied that five hours would not diminish the amount of power EJ could produce, just that his raw numbers are world tour level. I don't think that's very controversial, just as it's not controversial to say that his loose hair should be costing him +20 watts, that his technique is below average and that I doubt he could sit in the pro peloton, let alone survive a sprint. You need to focus on bringing your “race awareness” to the level of your power numbers…

    I think your real FTP is way lower than 360W or so you mentioned a couple of weeks ago. If your best hour power is only 299W, your FTP (40 mins) is absolutely no way 60W higher. Even 30W higher would be a fairly drastic falloff from 40 to 60 mins. Extrapolated FTP from 20 min tests is quite often very inaccurate. Looks like it here. You have insane top end though.

      It wasn't a 1 hour power test though, just a surgy longer race. May not be 360 but certainly a lot higher than 300.

      Did you miss where it said: NP 362?

      His NP for his best one hour 299AW was 360w+, so definitely closer to 360 FTP.
