What people need to realize is that the numbers are skewed because there are a lot of guys who just aren't good enough to last longer than a year or two. If you're a good enough player, a major injury or two won't stop you from making it 4 or 5 years in the league. Teams will keep taking chances on guys who have shown they are good players.
There are around 260 draft picks every single year. Most of which make NFL teams. To make room for 200+ you have to cut just as many. Often times it's 2nd or 3rd year guys who didn't live up to expectations.

Haha, my high school art teacher made it to the NFL for one season at free safety. He said the highlight of his football career was having Tom Brady throw a touchdown pass over his head, like he didn't brag about it at all. One day a fight broke out in the hall and he went full NFL speed through the door, I blinked and he wasn't there.
And he's a washout from that league.

The last clip on that punt, the guy who blocked #20 (Hall of Famer Ed Reed) pulled #20's facemask which is illegal but refs didn't call it. So he went and found that guy down the field and laid him out. By the way, you should watch Ed Reed highlights. Dude, in my opinion, is the greatest free safety to ever play. Widely considered to 3 ever in all circles though. He could lay you out, he intercepted the ball and could take it back for a touchdown and he returned punts at times as well. Only thing he didn't do was play on offense, that I know of. I believe he holds the record for longest interception return as well for 109 yards, which is literally the limit on how many yards a play can go.

With these type of hits concussion is the big issue. Repetitive hits have caused a great number of players to have serious cognitive & emotional decline in retirement. It's hard to tell why some are more susceptible.
The majority who've died & donate their brain for research show brain lesions.
A handful have killed themselves to stop the pain.
It's being addressed now w rules against head hits & trying to better the helmets.
It was ignored for so long players affected became desperate. Dave Duerson a hard hitting safety knew he was loosing his mind. He shot himself in the chest and left a note to autopsy his brain. They found as w many severe lesion formation all over his brain.

@@areguapiri Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But the science & anecdotal evidence for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, CTE, in football, is clear.
The Boston University Neurology Dept study found the significant Tau lesions & brain shrinkage (the 2 post mortem diagnostics for CTE) in 88% of 202 donated brains of former football players (from Youth league - NFL) including 99% of the NFL players. The majority of the brains from those with CTE symptoms in life.
In contrast, in a recently published study, 4.4% of the brains of 225 former U.S. servicemen found the same CTE markers, including 6.7 % of those w service blast exposure & 3.9% of those without blast exposure.
The reasons for it, why some are more susceptible than others is still being studied.
But the link & obvious degenerative effects on the brain, esp of former NFL players, are clear. There's also a higher risk of ALS among NFL players.
The families of Mike Webster, Justin Strzelczyk, Ken Stabler, Aaron Hernandez, Ray Easterling, Junior Seau, John Mackey, Jovan Belcher, Dave Duerson, Phillip Adams, Colt Brennan, Dwight Clark, Lou Creekmur, Frank Gifford, Chris Henry, Vincent Jackson, Terry Long, Ollie Matson, Earl Morrall, Tommy Nobis, Bubba Smith, Mosi Tatupu, Andre Waters and Demaryius Thomas will attest to debilitating dementia, memory loss, and paranoia during their lives and diagnosed w CTE after death.

"Average" career isn't a good statistic. Most of those people with short careers aren't cut short by injury it's because they just weren't good enough. Good players generally play for around 10 years. Tom Brady is on his 20th season.

Elite running backs should expect 3-5 year primes. With that said, guys like Adrian Petersen went forever at a high production level. Emmitt Smith is the leading rusher because he did, too. Even a Cowboys fan like me will tell you Barry was better
