You have two video clips and you need to splice these videos together. But what’s the best way to do this? Today, we’re going to show you shot combining techniques and explain the difference between splices, cutaways, and transitions.
Let’s start with the simplest ones. The hard cut is the easiest way to join videos. It’s just two clips on the timeline of your video editing program with no transitions. The jump cut, technically, is the hard cut, but it creates an effect as if a long period of time has passed. The jump cut is super popular on CZcams. Many music video producers and commercial directors like using it for their videos. The J-cut means that two clips are spliced with a hard cut, but the joint between their audio tracks is a few frames earlier. In L-cut, on the contrary, the clip splice goes first, then the joint goes between audio tracks.
The match cut is a more sophisticated video editing technique. To create a match cut you need to take two different clips with similar objects (for example, a wheel and drum of a washing machine) and splice them together so there’s no border between them. When we use the so-called Cutting on Action, the effect of a first-person video works out as if a viewer physically falls out of one scene and falls into another one. Normally, you must combine two scenes filmed in a special way to achieve this effect.
Cutaways are additional pieces of footage that cover the joint between two clips. Such footage as alternative angles of view, backstage shots, close-ups to clothing or interior details or just video illustrations of what people in your video are talking about.
In today’s video production, there are lots of different in-program video transitions, but a lot of film directors prefer keeping some Golden Oldies in their toolkits. For example, Fade to Black transition gives us the opportunity to draw a line between two different parts of a story. Blur In, Blur Out and Cross-Dissolve look gorgeous in movies or music videos, especially when you need to convey a character’s thoughts or memories or to create a visual metaphor.

My videos never got compliments before, but I'm starting to get compliments about my editing. It's really exciting. I even just really stepped up and made a small studio complete wth green screen. Movavi makes using it really simple...especially nice as I can insert my body into my own custom made backgrounds. Thanks and keep up the good work!
By the way...I use all sorts off transitions. It's easy and fun to experiment!

But what about audio matching? Any tricks with Movavi? I end up with ugly audio artifacts when cutting and Movavi only allows audio fade-in and fade-out of 0.5 second, which takes way too long and sounds weird when attempting a hard cut...

I have 32 movies of the same 8 minutes with with 5 characters and 5 instruments. You could say I had 8 cameras edited each 4 times. Is it plausible to place all these movies; (set and synced together or not) and in Movavi cut a piece out of each one, during final edit, and place parts of each 32 movies on one timeline with all of them having their own timeline along with the Master Timeline? to then be dissolved when done piecing out of each 32, to keep to a Master Timeline? Or do I have to cut each piece out of it's mother video/movie and save it as a separate file to add into Media menu of Movavi, then add each file to a limited 1 timeline off the Movavi Media Menu drop down? Then place those pieces in order on the one timeline via Media Menu Folder/Files?

Is the a way to "splice" 2 video clips in the timeline so they are one clip and all effects applied, apply to the whole video. This is a matter of function in the editor, not looks. Thanks.

Regarding the j-cuts and L-cuts: An L-cut is easy (because the green link line is on the left).

Hi! Did you try checking your video using any other video player on your computer before uploading it to FB or CZcams? We recommend you do this just to make sure if it's a regular problem of the editor or not. If transitions don't show up while you're playing back the video in the separate player, please, contact Movavi Support Team movavi.freshdesk.com/en/support/tickets/new
