Is Triangle Strategy as good as Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasty Tactics, or other Tactical RPGs?

It’s in my top 5 of the genre along with Fire Emblem, Valkyria Chronicles & Jeanne DArc.. Impressive for a single entry.. Hope we see more in the future..
Another one I’m checking out that is interesting is Diofield Chronicle.. Although it’s in the same family it has more real time elements
So this is the Game of Thrones of tactical rpgs? So it starts off good and ends terrible? And the creators are egotistical douchebags that ruined thier own creation?
Absolutely adore this game. The biggest criticism I kept hearing in reviews was that there was “too much story”. I wanted to laugh because I feel the reason most people play RPGs is for the story and characters. Add in how well Triangle Strategy is written and this criticism was a complete non-factor for me. It made the battles feel more important when they did happen. FANTASTIC game.
Exactly how I feel about it! Such a deep and emotional game with a great story and gameplay. I don't know what isn't to love.
What a strange complaint lol
@@TheSteelers4190 I think so too! If you like Xernogears, this doesn't even come close to touching that anyway!
@@Xygor exactly, I think of a handful of more JRPGs with more lengthy story moments......plus hasn't that always been part of the appeal for this genre?
Just to put the opposite viewpoint, as I can see where those complaints are coming from- I love RPGs, I love the stories and characters but there’s been times when I’ve been hit with wall and wall of text and then a short game play element, followed by some walking and more walls of text. Even with fantastic writing, there is such as a thing of balance, and knowing when to push the story forward, or keep a good pace, as well as letting you enjoy the world at your leisure at points.
In truth, the complaint is a good one even though it doesn’t apply to everyone, and just as valid as your viewpoint. We enjoy similar but different aspects in our games and have different tolerances. A good review will point this out. This is a fantastic game, but I’ve seen people who also like RPGs quit because of the long periods of exposition dumps.
I'm 100% with you there. Triangle Strategy was my first Tactical RPG outside of Fire Emblem, and I was NOT ready for how absolutely amazing it was going to be. I loved the storyline, the presentation, the music, the gameplay; pretty much everything was perfect for me.
Right on, it's so incredible! Thanks for leaving your thoughts also.
It feels more AA than AAA unlike FE but I definitely prefer the more serious tone and they give you choices to make.. I don’t think they should make any campy themed games in that HD2d style.. It just wouldn’t fit..
This is the first game that made me actually think about what to decide. I think they could have gotten rid of that scale system, cause to be honest, it denies the reason for a Monarchy in the first place, but it had the bonus of forcing you to really deep into what your about to decide.
It's called TRIANGLE because the three nations are positioned in a triangle on the map; that's what I like to think anyway.
Yes
Triangle Strategy is a top 5 JRPG for me. I was so hooked on it even after a slow first couple of hours.
Agreed, it's awesome!
I was iffy on this game at first but I ended up purchasing it at launch and holy cow, I haven't enjoyed an RPG like this in a seriously long time. 10/10 imo and I haven't made the time to 100% a game in quite awhile
Agreed, it's so incredible and kind of flies under the radar. Super impressive game.
Saying it's one of the best tactical RPG's out there pretty much sold me. Anything similar to Tactics Ogre and FFT is my jam, so thanks for the recommendation!
Great, I think you'll agree if you give it a try!
I recently completed all the endings for Triangle Strategy and thought it was fantastic game. Its my favorite Switch game.
It has some flaws, but the music, story, and combat are really well done.
Right on, mine too!
Low fantasy/dark fantasy as a genre has been around a long time and the genre GoT fits into.
True!
I love how much this game reminds me of Shining Force 😍
Definitely some similarities!
Shining force is the goat
dang, really love how u explained things about this game..., guess I should get this srpg in a beat
I don't think you'll be disappointed if you do!
FF Tactics is my favorite game of all time. Triangle Strategy and Fell Seal are the closest you can get to that.
Right on!
Agreed on most points, can't wait to get the last 3 runs to get the last 3 characters.
Right on!
I agree man. One of the best SRPGs out there. Very much enjoyed my time with it
Right on, couldn't agree more!
Trigonometry...the RPG.
P.S. Cornholio approves of the "TP" system.
Nice!
This was my favorite game of the year. The story was a little weak but the gameplay was so solid
It was so great, and I agree it was the best of that year. I think I must have liked the story more than you!
@Xygor it's not bad by any means. I actually like that a lot of tbe conflict comes from control of natural resources instead of a magic macguffin
It was more than just a little weak lol
I knew I’d like this game when I saw the Scales Of Conviction I always wanted a Game like that, wasn’t in a good place when I first played it so I dropped it but this inspired me to give it another try
It's worth it!
Agree with everything you said. I love the music, I am humming all of the battle song as I play😅
Right on! Isn't it great?
It’s definitely one of the best SRPGS in my collection.. I can’t comment on GOT being I never really watched it.. I did however make it through the somewhat underrated Telltale game.. TS is probably my favorite of the HD 2d classical rpg series.. Hadn’t quite played them all tho
Right on, couldn't agree more!
i am finishing Persona 4 on Steam right now. its a longass game. once i'm done with that, i think you've convinced me to get Triangle Strategy on Steam next.
Great! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
I enjoyed this game, gave me nostalgia vibes of Vandal Hearts from ps1
Right on, I love the Vandal Hearts games too! This was dark and gritty just like those.
Thanks for the review, very well done. I'm buying after I get some money, lol
Hope you enjoy it!
Didn't even knew this was a thing till I saw this on my yt recommended today haha. Will prob get this after I am done with octopath and tactics ogre reborn.
I don’t think you’ll regret it!
Don't worry pal! It's not like disliking TRIANGLE Strategy makes you...B) A SQUARE!
Haha, nice!
I enjoyed this for so many hours. Such a gem of a game, and I loved the challenge without being stupidly challenging...except when I stepped on a land mine by doing the Golden Route first. But that's my fault, not the game's |-)
If Acquire makes a sequel or, please, a brand new tactical game with a better title, it's a day 1 purchase for me.
Agreed, I really hope it's followed up on - such an amazing experience!
We all think we would make the right decisions in dire circumstances.
This game proves that right and wrong, good and evil isn't so black and white.
So true! That’s probably what I love most about it.
My favourite modern day tactics RPG!
Mine too. Such a great game!
I like Triangle Strat a whole bunch. Tactics Ogre hasn't really tickled my fancy for some reason.
Fair enough! Of the two, I like Triangle Strategy a little more but it had the luxury of being made so much later. Tactics Ogre is still an all-time classic.
Great game, equally good as Tactics Ogre Reborn and FF Tactics. Each have something done better than other two.
Agreed, it's so good!
I really wanted to like this game. I just can't get past how long winded the story scenes are, the neon colored tile and ability effects, and the level of bloom on any light. The environments and pixel art are amzing tho. Loved the video even if i didn't like the game.
Fair enough, thanks for sharing your thoughts on it!
I must say this: I completely agree that the name's is dumb, it pushed me back from trying the game until now. But the more I hear about the game, the more i'm tempted to try it out.
You really should!
Triangle strategy was a bit slow to get into. My first impressions of the game were not great, but I kept playing. Now I've beaten it 7ish times, I find it to be a masterpiece of a game. Even though the story was a burden at first, I grew to love the world and story. I do think improvements could be made to make it more accessible to people, but it's a special game in how well the world and characters were built. I wish more people could look past the slow start to see the game for what it is.
Game is a masterpiece
I totally agree!
Triangle Strategy is a good successor to Jeanne d'Arc on the PSP. While the class system is extremely limited, every class is interesting and there's a good synergy between most character skills. The level design is top notch, feeling like it took the basic ideas we were seeing in Knight of Lodis (weather, climbing, knockbacks, fire/water/electricity spells interacting) and following them to their logical conclusion. The levels were so good you didn't mind revisiting them 2-3 times.
My feeling was that, of the two modern TRPGs seeing love from fans, Fell Seal was the much better game because of how it handled the class system, being a successor to Final Fantasy Tactics instead of Jeanne d'Arc. The writing was also a bit better in Fell Seal than Triangle Strategy.
Then Tactics Ogre: Reborn came out, and it made me realize just how good a Yasumi Matsuno game is. I fell in love all over again, and I'm not sure I could safely put Triangle Strategy into the same conversation as Reborn. Matsuno handles character, story, and high concept worldbuilding so well that it tainted my view of Triangle Strategy, which now feels cartoonish and rushed by comparison.
Triangle Strategy had a lot of good ideas that fell flat. The scales system offered inane choices (where to go on vacation, Hyzante or Aesrfrost?) or absurd choices (Do you want to murder your best friend and sell your most trusted subjects into slavery for fun?). The idea of morality versus utility versus liberty is good, but the characters who represent those choices do so in a way reminiscent of a Saturday Morning villain. Fredericka is scolding me because I hurt a building to save someone's life. Roland wants to sell his people to slavery, but he seems to be too dumb to realize what he's doing. And Benedict always advocates for the most evil course of action. What's more, when I convince someone of any route, they all talk as though I succeeded on the worst version of the argument I made.
I badly need a version of Triangle Strategy that portrays the most honest, best versions of morality, liberty, and utility in conflict with each other. Because there's an interesting story to be told, but Triangle Strategy doesn't even try to tell it.
If Reborn is a 95 and War of the Lions is a 90, I'd put Fell Seal as a solid 80 and Triangle Strategy around 65 with Jeanne d'Arc at a 55. Where anything over 50 is enjoyable, and 100 would be a perfect Tactical RPG.
Thanks for all your thoughts about it!
"Oh this game has too many dialogues and cutscenes!".
Me, a Planescape Torment enjoyer:
The game of thrones of tactical rpg is Vandal Hearts 2
That's a good game too!
This reminds me of how vinland saga is the game of thrones of anime
Interesting, haven't heard of that!
Have not played this yet, but will 😂
It's really worth it!
Loved this game - one thing is that I hated how new game+ was handled. I'll admit its it's just a me thing probably, but I found the fact that the levels staying the same made the gameplay not harder, but a lot slower. Enemies were just so spongey it felt like forever to beat the first few chapters. I was playing on the hardest difficulty so maybe that was also a factor? To be honest its been a while so my exact memory of the save file is foggy.
I also wish there were more characters locked to specific routes/decisions. Like why was that spearman rosell not playable! In the end I could only do one play through and then got burnt out from a new game plus file. If I were to play again I'd probably just start over completely.
Thanks for the feedback on New Game +!
most new game + games burn you out rather quickly to be fair
@@armorvil maybe so!
Uncomfortably familiar emotes of characters during cutscenes to FFT.
Fantastic game 🎉
It really is!
After spending over 100 hours on Triangle Strategy and over 300 on Tactics Ogre, I personally think Tactics Ogre has a more fleshed out story and more adult themes and way more branching storylines. Triangle Strategy is still fun and enjoyable in its own way and i would totally play it again mostly for gameplay and strategy.
Thanks for your thoughts on it!
Hope it goes to PlayStation. I’d get the platinum trophy for it. It was my most played game on switch last year
It was such a good one! They're bringing a lot of former Switch exclusives to other platforms, so maybe they'll do it with this one and bring it to PlayStation 4/5 in addition to Steam.
My almost game of 2022. Just narrowly beaten by Gunvein.
Yikes!
I bought this game but the whole "let's have a hour of story with no fights" part sort of killed it for me. It's making it hard to pick it back up. I usually love games with in depth stories but somehow this game takes it too far.
Fair enough!
Nice review. It's regrettable that it has the most generic-sounding cell phone shovelware title possible. Made me just immediately dismiss it. Not that "Final Fantasy Tactics" is exactly imaginative. I guess the moral is you can't judge a book by its cover. I may have to give this one a chance because I've heard a lot of good things from various sources!
So true! Thanks for watching, glad you liked it!
Game of Triangles
Pretty much!
Your review just sold a copy to me, coming full circle in your video, what would you have named the game?
I absolutely love this game. Deep and grossing story.
My only complaint was that there was that battles took forever. Holy cow.
True, some of the battles are pretty long!
Did you know there is a secret bonus accessory if you never let a character die? :)
I didn't know that!
@@Xygor Well it's called the plume of immortality and you get it when you get any ending in any difficulty without deaths :) Reviving is still a death though. So i'd go for it on easy and it's easy really.
@@scottpilgrim2 thanks for all this info, I'll have to look into that!
Hope that means you liked the video!
should've called it "Salt Default".
at least it rhymes, lmao.
Interesting idea!
Enjoyed both the gameplay and story a lot, but the first couple of hours were pretty annoying imo. The early game pacing was awful with the # of dialogue/cutscene sequences in a row.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts of it!
First triple a game worth $60 in awhile
Agreed!
The way I always describe the story of Triangle Strategy is a sports car with 30 gears. It will be very fast, but you got to shift a lot of gears in order to get there. The story gets progressively better, but very slowly. It took 4 hours and 4 sessions for the story to hook me. I get the world building reasoning for this long opening, but it was damn slow.
I like the combat better than FE3H combat. I like how positioning is a key factor in your tactics and how well it is executed. This was the main drive for me to continue playing until the story took over.
That’s a great comparison! Thanks for leaving your thoughts of it here.
The dark souls of game of thrones of strategy rpgs
Maybe so!
The demo for Triangle Strategy really turned me off of the game. It felt very stifling to play, compared to other games, where you could equip your whole party with a basic heal spell or have them all able to throw rocks if they were too far to do something more useful. Also the person with haste being the slowest person on your team (and also your healer) so the only logical thing to do would be for her to cast it on herself to widen that window of opportunity where someone needs healing and there aren't enough enemy-turns coming up for them to finish the job first. You couldn't have multiple fire mages because only that one fire mage was your assigned fire mage, so if someone was standing in a perfect position to get hit with a fire spell you had to hope that they didn't get another turn and move away before it was your one fire mage's turn. You couldn't equip your team with sword-and-shield because shields are main-weapons in this world, and since everyone has just one weapon proficiency, only your assigned "shield-guy" can use them.
Don't judge a book by its cover.
Don't judge a game by its title.
Good point!
I didnt buy the game because I thought it was a game like Civilization because of the name.
Haha, fair enough! I can see that.
Can't we have tactical RPGs with like modern graphics? This retro style long since overstayed its welcome.
Totally disagree, love the style. But thanks for your feedback regardless!
Play DioField Chronicles then
@@mikej2020 not the same kind of game at all
@@armorvil they are both SRPGs
They really needed to use the character portraits from battle for the conversations. Also the piss poor character customization and advancement was really frustrating. Also the money and item economy in this game is ridiculous. All that said I still enjoyed it
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about it!
This game is more reading a book than actually playing a game. Just play octopath 2
as if "game of thrones" is suppose to mean something >_> i hate this damn title....
The video however was very well made. great job.
I didn't like this game. I liked The Diofield Chronicle more
Fair enough, I should try that one!
@@Xygor I love it. It's more my style
The name is good. So sick of overly flamboyant fantasy names.
Fair enough, I think you're in the minority with this take though!
@@Xygor I think the people who were going to buy it were going to buy it regardless of the name. Turn base strategy RPGs aren't as hype
this game wasnt shyt. repetitive enemies, trash story, the exploration was forgetful, trash name.
only gud thing about this game was that its a sjrpg. the game play is super repatative anf the skill tress are super bland.
mario and rabbidds is better than triangle strategy.
the game is stupid af, the scenes are slow af and they could just add some scenes together but u have to keep clicking on stupid mapped area that you cant explore yet a still path is expected..........5/10
I’m I’m I’m I’m gonna get some oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
