  • (Lyrics in CC).
One of Taiwan's most treasured albums is Teresa Teng's 1983 release, 'Serene Feelings,' featuring 12 tracks inspired by ancient Chinese poetry. This album includes our all-time favorite song, 'How Much Sorrow' (几多愁), better known in Chinese poetry and history as 'Yu Mei Ren' (虞美人-春花秋月何时了).
Written by Li Yu, the final emperor of the Tang Dynasty during the Five Southern Dynasties, the verse expresses Li's longing for his lost country-a sentiment for which he ultimately lost his life. Regarded as one of the finest (if not the finest) verses in Chinese poetry, it demands excellence from composers and singers alike. Tan Jian-Chang, the composer of the music, rose to the challenge; Teresa Teng then delivered a flawless performance.
This song is 'unprecedented in the past, unparalleled in the future' (前无古人,后无来者), embodied in the work of Teresa Teng, Li Yu, and Tan Jian-Chang. We are delighted to present it here, along with what we believe to be the most accurate English interpretation of the verse.

Thank you for this song and the English lyrics. As a westerner, it is fairly difficult to know what Teresa Teng was singing about. She was a beautiful soul who will live in my heart for the rest of my life.

Thank you for the kind words. This song is particularly challenging to translate because some words in the verse are ambiguous and have historically received vastly different interpretations. But I am confident our translation is the most accurate. We hope to cover more of Teresa Teng's work in the future.

So profound and sad. Chinese songs bring out the emotions, good introduction in English of the meaning behind the song.

@user-kh9de9jg2w Thanks! We'll look into the history of that plan. It's incredibly difficult to make a poetry-based song. We'll be releasing a video shortly to show how even small lapses can tank a song. 几多愁 is unmatchable; makes you appreciate the ingenuity of the human mind.
