1)Leave it outside in an open area so insects can do there thing.
    2) Wait a couple months until the bones of the turtle skull or legs start to show by then you can do what i did with this video.

In 1985 my grandmother found a turtle in her back yard. I took it home and gave it to my baby sister Shelly. We named him Abercrombi. At the time the vet guessed him to be 15 yrs.
My sister died expectantly in February of 08 and Abiei back in my care. While I had him I confirmed my suspicions that Abercrombi was actually an Abigale.
Today I found Abie had left to be with my sis. Rest her little soul.
My sis always said she wanted to keep Abie's shell on her coffee table. thx now i will

For everyone throwing a stink: The turtles dead. It can't feel anything, the body was merely the vessel and this guy chose to keep a part of the vessel that wouldn't decay. It might be weird but 1. It's not harming anybody, not the turtle, not himself, not anyone else, or the environment 2. The turtle went back to the environment, circle of life and all that 3. The shell is being used for a purpose. I wouldn't personally do this, but this is within a moral gray area - this isn't "good" nor is it bad, it's whatever.

I lost my 36 year old Box Turtle Murtle just a few weeks ago, and I buried him in my yard in his favorite spot, but everyone has the right to preserve a memory of a pet anyway they choose. Just my opinion.

    Thanks very informative!
My first and only tortoise Speedy Gonzales died today (6/feb/18 [great start to the year] ) after going to the vets. She was already weak and suffering from kidney problems. She was a gorgeous horsefield tortoise i got online. But ever since i had her, i had problems with her. This year September would have been 6 years since i had her and may would have been her 6th birthday. Im devastated, she was my family! The vet whispered to me that Speedy may not make it, trying to make sure my little niece wouldn’t hear (because she thought Speedy was my niece’s) but shes mine and i burst into tears and wept like an infant. I don’t care, i have no shame, i loved her like my child. The longest and most significant relationship I’ve had to date (other than my human family) so she means a lot to me. I Initially i wanted to cremate her and keep her ashes but felt like id forget her beauty (she was really beautiful) so when for the preserving shell option, BUT i could never bring my self to give her injections when she was alive so id pawn her off to my sister for injections. I couldn’t bare to be the one to cause her any pain. how can i possibly dissect my precious Speedy?! But this video really helped a lot!!!!!! Its not as bad as i thought. Letting nature do the dirty work for me is a GREAT IDEA! so i can keep her memory going on, like i always wanted. My future kids can see how special she was.
    Thanks again for the video.
REST IN PEACE IN YAHWEH’S ARMS SPEEDY GONZALES🤧😇🙏💖

You are shaming someone for wanted to keep a part of their loved one/pet with them. It isnt hurting the turtle/tortoise nor is it hurting you. People grieve differently and you seriously need to respect that.

I’m not sure how active you are since you don’t post too often. Or how keen you are on responding to comments on videos this far back.. but what type of turtle was this.. from my experience all the scutes either get really loose or fall off all together. At least that’s my experience with aquatics. Its interesting because it looks like all the scutes in this case dried in place making it super durable. I preserve mine in Florida climate and sometimes get exposed to a little rain overspray where they’re laying so I’m curious if loose scutes is just a biproduct of exposure to moisture during the decomposition process. Super interesting video so thank you. It is a brutal process to witness so I don’t think many people post on it. But you really can’t appreciate the process until you do it yourself. I love my turtles whole heartedly and just wish to keep the memory of them and I have some unique individuals which makes it all the more fascinating

my 25 year old red eared slider died a couple days ago. still pretty fresh. if I put it outside, will another animal not drag it off somewhere? I'd like to preserve the shell but dont want to leave it where another critter can just take it.

I guess this is a way to remember your turtles but still rest in peace

could you somehow harden it to make some armor or can you carve it into things?

@overtkill7 Suggestion, really big turtle shells seem to fall apart easier then smaller turtle shells. Use like super glue or hot glue in places it seems weak.

Andrew Vasquez if you remember where you left the turtle you can still dig them up. I read some people barry them to keep they’re shell.

My tortoise hasn’t moved in about 3 days during hibernation. He’s not smelling and just looks asleep outside his shell... if it does turn out he’s dead I have cats and can’t really do this outside can I put dirt on him inside his terrarium outside and leave him like this?

I’m so sorry for your loss. We just recently lost our beloved turtles. 😔 how long would you say you had them sitting? Is the smell terrible? Is it better to have them sit outside vs like a basement or something. It’s very cold outside because of winter. And I would like to keep the shells. For those who can’t handle doing this? What else would you suggest??

  • @ridgidcarloportajada4674

Hi! Do you think there would be any way to keep the turtle's shell without having to rot it out? Thanks for the video. :)

I don't know why people can be so rude with unkind comments and whatnot. They were your pets, it's your choice what you choose to do with them after their death, whether that be burying it, preserving it, etc. It's a personal choice, people should respect that.

Also, the turtle that died always stayed in the basking area and rarely went into the water. Is that a sign of something or is that normal?

You can clean the bones, glue them all together right? Pretty much like those bones you see in museums. To make your turtle a display type to remember it

I have a three year old box turtle, super young, great health, and she is still tiny. I got her when she was about the size of a quarter. Uncle found her because he almost stepped on her. The strange thing is,she hisses at me,is that normal?

I have had a red eared slider since 2008. He is huge. I think my turtle is so healthy and happy because he is left alone. I believe turtles are like fish and stress (handling) is a huge problem for them. I have only handled him about 20 times in 8 years for 6 month tank deep cleaning. And for those new to aquatic pets.....keep some of the old water and mix it in with new water to keep the proper biology. Lastly, he doesnt seem to sleep through the winter, is this normal?....no heater in tank, natural sunlight.

I kind of want to do this so that there is a memory of my turtles around but at the same time I've always buried my pets so it wouldn't quite seem right. I've still got about 15 years to make up my mind though so you know. I think I'd have to get someone to pull the bones out for me to.
