Great work on reviewing budget but workable parts and bikes. It seems to be quite common that supplied seats are usually bad same with pedals. My go to replacement saddle is the WTB volt mediium padding with standard steel rails. Pedals theres so many now and you don't have to settle for e bay chinese knockoffs. One Ups, Chesters, Crankbros, DMR's to name a few. A new brand called Foundation is very cool. I think its Jenson USA's house brand. Cro-mo axels, nice hard composite, cartridge bearings and serviceable. Normally $30 got them on sale for 20! Heres the kicker the replacement pins are 4 bucks and available. Replacement pins can be a real hassle finding them and cost too much. I'm going to check if the pins are compatible with other pedals I have. Nice to see Canyon get some love. It would be cool if lbc's had them but then again direct gets you the deals. All my own money here no one is paying me or giving me stuff.
That bike is definitely a good find. You really get alot for the money and surprisingly that coil fork doesnt look too bad!

Looks like a good bike! I usually replace all seats with SDG bel air (in steal) because it's usually cheap and works for most people. I just bought a canyon bike myself, first new bike since 2009. retiring my 2007 Hard tail for a gravel bike.
Yep as I said the jump up in quality for that extra couple of hundred bucks really shows.
Upgrades:
saddle, but as has been mentioned width is important, don’t go cheap here! Is Toby skinny or stocky? I would aim at a width of about 145mm if taking a guess!
Dropper post …. I’d say yes as it seems the post won’t go all the way down now! I’d go for a kindshock one as they’re really good value.
Pedals yes! Blue ones!
Grips yes lock on and blue if possible.
Wide riser bar about 760mm with a low rise, the Wake bar are good value and come in blue!!
Some blue bits just to jazz it up a bit so quick releases, stem cap and seat collar?

seats are such personal thing, that is hard to say is something great or sucks. i like the color of that bike. usually not into these baby blue colors, but it looks nice on that bike. and good thing you found your camera :)

Just got mine today, total bait and switch! It came with a cheap 100mm suntour X1 fork instead of a XCR 120mm. It has a cheaper crankset and chainring. And it has a cheaper suntour cassette.
2:42 That won't stop wear at the front and rear of the chain stay. nor chain falling off and grinding the BB area, and and area between chain ring and chain stay.
But if only riding over kerbs then it might, but if shredding, then chain can make a mess.
I recommend to use VHS2.0
And clear 3M tape in hard to reach places and to keep it pretty, but might use rubber tape to give full coverage too, I did that on my bike, I use Slapper tape, it does fine on direct hits but horrible at stuff grinding, pushing on it.
Hope you upgraded a bit of the "finders" kit for recovering the go-pro (It's handy when you have an abundance of bits post testing.)
I usually have a box of "name brand" bottles/cans of reink in my van that work well as a thanx... tho I'm usually the one that stops to help (but expect no more than a nice smile & thanx to make my day),
Got the warm fuzzies last week playing Frisbee Golf near dusk and found a magnetic golf ball marker on a path, called out to some golfers a good distance away and it turned out it was not only one of theirs, but was given to him by a good Aussi golfer that had since died from cancer so was worth way more to him than its face value.

Your's didn't come with a 10-60 deore
Just got mine this weekend. Deore shifters are sweet. Hydrualic brakes work great. Minimal tuning needed. Assembly was easy. Overally I'm very happy with the value

Just ordered mine. It was between the polygon xtra 7 and the grand canyon five. The polygon may be better for upgrading your hubs and wheels. But this is more than I need and was $300 less with free shipping.

Throw on a Reba RL 100, Shimano DEORE 6100 series disc brakes, lighter Continental Mountain king tires, Terry Saddle, Thomson Seatpost, 30mm rise 28” riser bar, a Race Face 60mm OS Stem - bumps the bike up a notch but now the bike is ready to plow the singletrack in Oregon.
Did you see I commented a couple days ago that I'm doing a GT Aggressor mod... I'm adding a 2 stroke motor to it... The motor was supposed to come today, should receive it tomorrow... hopefully get started this weekend!!!

Cool to see this bike on a real time review. I had just recommended this bike to a friend who is getting in MTB riding and didn't want to spend a TON of money. I picked the Canyon because it needs so little work as a beginner bike.( super reliable 12 speed drive train, AMAZING brakes, decent fork and pretty nice tires too.) I really think Canyon hit the mark on a great "budget" starter bike.
Now if only more of "bike shop bike" manufacturers would WAKE up and do the same. I know wishful thinking, but a man can dream right?
The reason no one can touch Canyon for the price is the direct to consumer business model. No one comes close to the price/quality of any Canyon under $2500 or so. I looked at probably every brand and model on the market, and found Canyon hard to beat and untouchable when on sale.

@@brandihodges9548 I’m still about 100% sure no human on the planet could find comfort on those lower end canyon seats. I got halfway down the block on my new Canyon before I turned around, came home and pulled the spank saddle off my Kovid Kruiser. That “padding” is like wet suit material but as hard as a rock.
Only upgrades
From the start definitely pedals.
It depends:
A dropper post, if going offroad on steep that's a must, if not not needed
fork, if he plans to jump or go gnarly on it
lock on grips, once the current grips start sliding
oval chainring to eliminate the heavy point of the stroke, and help to reduce or eliminate knee pain, it worked for me.
The bike already has the rear derailleur I would have on any bike.👌
But the owner of the bike should have the seat bones measured, or go for saddle width that suits him. But some saddles are just awful.
But I would keep everything else as is, until something breaks.
But I don't know how the engagement is on the hub. If it super awful, constantly making banging sounds with huge dead zone then it has to be changed. If not leave it alone.

Hello! Im a begginer to bikes in general, and want to start with a budget option, Ive seen this GC5 and the Trek Marlin 5 sound like good options for me as a begginer, which would you recommend more based of specs and all of that, i dont know anything about bikes, hope you guys can help me! Thxxx
Hey brother, well congrats on getting into the mtb world and hopefully you can find a great ride. Now the Trek Marlin 5 is a sweet ride and reputable. It has git a freehub which is a great thing when it comes to upgrades over time. We have friends who own a bike shop and Trek is what they sell. We find out what a bike shop has to offer. Check the video out, I believe we checkout a 5 on the video. Good luck and I think it would be a great starter bike.

When I was younger and raced BMX bikes and pedaled around the neighborhoods and did long 50 mile loop rides on our 20" bikes....our seats never had the padding the newer bikes have. Never had the seats dropped .. we just had to pull up the bike and bunnyhop higher and tuck the seat into our lower gut while in air....granted the bikes were smaller...but got lost in what I MEANT to say. . No padded seats were fine for us and the biker shorts were seemingly only for the "old people" haha!
I did see that there is a seat offered with a carbon fiber body and no padding and was reminding me of a lightweight functional comfortable "looking" seat. I have ordered one of these for my K2 Nomad 3.0 and I don't have it out together as of yet...but wondering how that seat would work on this bikes application. It was less than $9 on Temu.

@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS I only ride the exterior padded shorts to ride my road bike. IN THE TRAILS I tend to rather where cargo shorts or jeans overtop for pockets and such. Plus the material snags more on the spandex stuff....

@@mrupholsteryman I think the 80’s bmx seats had a better shape or something. I remember them being comfortable. These canyon seats are flat as wood, and that wet suit looking material is rock hard.

@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS there is the basic orange bottle one, then there is the tungston one which is more expensive thats the space tech one that smooths out the imperfections on your chain 🤷🏻♂️ but I've only used the £5 orange bottle one and it's so smooth and quite and my trousers aren't dirty any more the chain stays really clean... But overall its the feeling of the bike it rides really smooth

ok so you said size large if i caught toby handover video correct you said your 5'8 was it comfortable i'm 5'10 i'm wanting a medium bike i have marin wild cat 4 large womens bike i hate rental red bikes it seems the blue only comes in large or bigger one last sorta does that fork bottom out much i have 120 mm on my marin reason i want upgrade is marin sucks on hill climbing my 7 speed can power up the hill the marin epic fails i'm after hill climbing and speed is minor i ride 3 to 4 k miles a year the dropper post is not distractor or need i'm not jumping more than foot or less i'm leaning toward canyon 6 maybe if size did bother you . the marin is being retired either canyon or specialized

Dropper gives you best of both worlds. Low when you want it, high when you want it. I’ve been riding dropper for 5 years now and wouldn’t have a MTB without one. I even want one on my gravel bike!
Maybe because i'm from Europe but i think that canyon has much beter frame's than mongoose or schwinn. Canyon is maybe more expensive but you get much more ... But still i sold my canyon strive to buy trek remedy 😂

Canyon frames are light years better than current mongoose and Schwinn because they’re box store bikes now. If I’m 100% honest, the Canyon Stoic I just got on sale is less expensive and ten times better than my Axum dp Kovid Kruiser build.
The Bigger bike companies are offering poor kit on their semi-flagship 100 mm hard tails. We built up this bike (Grand Canyon) , on paper, with nice primo kit and it ditched the other bikes and was well under $2k. I am amazed at to what junk these big bike companies are offering. The Dealers in the US suck….absolutely suck….. The now offer overpriced garbage.
The seats canyon puts on their bikes are garbage. Saves them money to produce and they know people usually replace seats to their preference anyway so it's just a way to keep the price lower. I had it on my bike for all of 1 hour.
