      It was one of those books that was a bit intimidating. But it’s slow and beautiful and hard and redemptive. 🥰

    I so deeply understand that feeling of "this would be great to study and write an essay on but I am not having fun" 😅 You're making me want to reread LoTR all over again! Really agree on that final Shire visit at the end, it also really drives him to me how much you can never return to those early golden days. It's not just that Frodo is changed by the journey but the Shire is too, as is the vision of the Shire that was motivating them in the hardest parts of their journey, but it was still worth saving and important to fight for! Makes me emotional every time 😊

      I told a friend I think the first two chapters of "If On A" and the final 2 are all that is needed to get the gist. So unless you are having to read it for a class, forget about the rest of the book! 😰

      Start with Era 1 of Mistborn (the final empire) for Sanderson. His new stuff lacks depth and the weightiness of importance that his earlier work has.

    If On a Winter's Night sounds like such a fascinating concept, but it also sounds like it wasn't very well executed. I find myself intrigued! I've kind of wanted to read Ben Hur ever since watching Anne of Green Gables as a kid. 😅 But I haven't yet because honestly I'm not sure if I would enjoy it. I read Woman in White when I was a teenager and I remember absolutely loving it... But that's all I remember. I enjoyed All the Light We Cannot See (with some caveats), but I didn't get very far in the other Doerr book I tried. I really loved reading EO with you both! I, too, wanted more, especially in the last two chapters. When you told me that about the Cheevers book, I looked it up and it seems like she has a tendency (according to some readers) of inserting herself into what she's writing, and of presenting as fact things that are either unproven and unsupported by evidence, or myths that have been disproven. She sounds like a pretty unreliable non-fiction author, based on what I've been seeing.

    • @novelideea
      @novelideea  Před 4 měsíci

      I think Calvino executed the kind of book he wanted to write very well. However, I wanted a story and not a lesson on the concepts of writing. Between that and the sexual content I didn't want to read any more Calvino. Which is sad because I loved the way he wrote.
      I was a teen when I read Woman in White too.
      All the Light We Cannot See is another one that is written well, but it left me flat. I don't think it came together well in the end, and I did't love the time jump that left so much of the two lives unexplored. In this nonfiction none of that beautiful use of language comes through, so it really was flat.
      Yah, I sorta got that feeling about Cheever without looking anything up about her. I am appreciating the LePlante bio much more, though I want to ring her father's neck.

      The ending is like a snowball rolling downhill! Becca and i were throwing conspiracy theories back and forth like crazy! Even though we only read a book (it’s divided into 3) it made it so much more intense that way.

    I need to finish The Woman in White! I have the worst staying power with Wilkie Collins! 😂I’ve only finished Man and Wife with a group and I really enjoyed it. P.S. I saw you 👀 gave Skyhunters a low rating on StoryGraph. I’m curious why!? 😂 I don’t remember you talking about it here. 😅

    • @novelideea
      @novelideea  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Skyhunter - I did talk about it in a video. I think I liked it until it became more about the love story than about the world and the intrigue. It also was pretty graphic with some of the violence.
      I reread and really didn’t get on with Collins’ Moonstone, so I wasn’t sure what to expect diving into WiW. I’m so glad I enjoyed it! 💗
