Hi. It’s like I mentioned in the video how can Yamaha continue to supply the American market with the older LCD dash? I’m sure there must be a valid reason but it is beyond me. Other variants are also available now in certain countries in Europe, a travel and extreme version. I read a lot on forums about how difficult it is to get hold of a Tenere in the USA and yet in Europe you can easily pick one up new or used (although admittedly I did have to wait 4 months for my 2023 model). Oh well rant over. Thanks for taking the time to comment. It’s really appreciated. Stay safe and keep riding.🇺🇸🇬🇧👍🏼

As a former GS owner, I rode a T7 at a demo dav event and started planning the sale of my BMW about 10 minutes into the ride. You'll feel the top heaviness the first time you drop it on a trail. Work on your deadlifts :) Beyond that, it's a great machine, and plenty of mods are available to elevate it further. An ECU tune will smooth out that throttle on/off switch feeling.

Great advice mate thanks. I am very conscious that it's a difficult beast to pick up and it's something I'm going to have to practice as I'm flying solo later in the year around Eastern Europe on the TET. Drops are inevitable. I always found the GS pretty easy to pick up. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Stay safe and keep riding 👍🏻

I totally agree mate. I cannot for the life of me work out why they are not providing the US market with the same as the European. As far as I know us Europeans get bikes made in France. US & Australia get bikes made in Japan... Which, when you think about it is even more crazy as Yamaha is a Japanese company. You would think it would be the other way round!

After riding the GS for decades, going back to the R100’s and have enjoyed every one. I stopped buying new when they became water cooled and computers with two wheels and ordered my last new bike without ABS back then as it was very basic and in my opinion not as safe as my right wrist.
I bought the standard T700 and kept the 1200 GS but rarely rode either for a few years and as the trip to Africa was aborted, the Yamaha was sold.
This year I bought the World Raid and like it so much the GS has gone.
Have serviced and repaired bikes for the last 59 years (not a typo error) do not look forward to spending a whole day changing the plugs…..I drink a lot of coffee whilst working on the bike!!!!
Have lowered the bike 40mm with dog bone suspension links and can assure everyone it has not in any way effected the handling of the bike on road one jot.
The suspension on the WR compared to my last T700 is far better, I’ve stiffened the ride as is my preference and it handles incredibly well, providing your riding style is smooth.
The brakes work well, many complain about the rear being inadequate but as it should only be used as a support to the front and when stationery it again is very capable.
Would I go back to a GS? No, I don’t think I would. On today’s road network, why do I need 1300cc’s, and where would I use all that power?
The Tenere 700 is an incredibly capable machine for all things and trust me, for the short time I’ve had the WR, it will keep up with sports bikes on the curves but it won’t reach speeds of 150 plus mph…..thankfully.
The standard exhaust is in the wrong place in my opinion and not the most attractive but can easily be replaced with many of the after market products available and improves the looks considerably.
I have long trips planned in 2024 and this bike has renewed my interest for travel.
This was a great review, look forward to watching videos of the planned modifications.

Thank you Mr Capp for one of the most interesting comments I have read in years. My biking journey seems to mirror yours in many ways. I ran my 1200LC for nearly 10 years, I loved it. It was the basic version but I do need reliability as I commute all year round. The GS was beginning to feel very tired and niggles and gremlins were starting to creep in (not starting when wet, etc) so I went for the T7 after I had been quietly watching the reviews and stalking in the shadows of the forums for years.
I quickly realised I could not justify keeping 2 bikes and recently sold my GS to a pensioner who seemed to know a thing or two about bikes. The thought of my trusty GS living in a nice warm garage, being properly cared for seemed a suitable retirement plan for my bike. I had beaten the crap out of her (see my back catalogue of videos).
The T7 has exceeded all my expectations. I now wonder why it has taken me so long to go back to a more useable, less heavy bike. I used to own the old Africa Twin and Transalp, both were extremely capable, just like the Yamaha.
I’ve since taken the T7 on a nice long trip to understand it a bit better, you may have seen the videos, if not, and you have some time, check them out. Either way I’ve finally fitted some heated grips and a few other odds and sods the bike feels very capable and long distance ready. I intend to go to Morocco next year. Simply put I love it. Stay safe and keep riding brother.

I modified my Africa Twin seat .. If you remove the staples on three sides and peel back the seat cover back towards the rear of the seat and sand the "skin" off the foam, it opens the foam cells and makes it softer, I also cut a slit in the foam where the base of my spine sits to reduce the pressure .. it improved things for me for very little cost .. looking forward to the future vids ..

I was watching the video back and realised I was calling him…her. I think it’s because I shot the intro after I picked the bike up which basically means the bike had a sex change in the first 30 kms. Now it identifies as a bike so I should be ok. Yeah, I’ve been lurking in the Tenere forums and watching videos literally for years now. I was pinning hopes on the Transalp but it’s about as bland as a bike gets (although I’m sure it’s very good). I’m still bonding with the bike but I’m liking it more and more. Farkles are complete (for now, because let’s face it that never ends) and I’m editing the video. I guess that is the question of all questions. In my humble opinion, if comfort is your primary need then the GS is the king. The T7 is wide of the mark in terms of comfort. I can happily sit on a GS all day (even with a low seat) and have pretty much zero issues. As for the AT, my mate has the Adv Sport version with DCT, electronic suspension etc, etc and he also loves it. I think the electronic package on the GS is better, the AT is overly complicated and not particularly user friendly. There really is only one problem with the GS and that is everybody has one!!! I don’t want to spend huge amounts of money on an aftermarket seat that may end up being no better so I’m going to try a Cool Cover (Google cool covers) and see how I get on. Naturally this is only my opinion and others may suffer badly with the seat, equally others may have no problem with it. I have not taken a passenger on the bike so I cannot comment on that. I hope this helps. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Stay safe and keep riding 👍🏼

Yeah, I know the feeling. I attempted to keep my GS and the T7 but riding through winter one of the bikes just wasn’t getting the attention it needed. With a heavy heart I sold my GS to a pensioner with a warm garage, who promised to look after it. It was like handing over an old friend. I watch my old videos from time to time with my GS in it, such a brilliant bike. On a positive note the T7 is exciting, raw, primitive and makes you feel like a Dakar hero every time you swing a leg over it. Do I miss my GS? Definitely. Do I regret getting the T7? Definitely not. I have a 31inch inseam. I’ve pretty much exclusively ridden tall bikes, so I am quite comfortable on tip toes. Every riders back side is different so I can only pass on my experience I've had with the low seat. I have now, on many occasions, ridden the bike for multiple days over long distance, so yes you can do it. Is it comfy? In short no. I thought about getting an aftermarket seat but there is no way of knowing if this will solve the problem. So my next move is to get a Cool Cover seat cover (google Cool Cover) and try that. If that fails I'm trying a bicycle riders padded short. If that fails I'll just keep riding the bike. It's that good I won't lose much sleep over an aching backside. Thanks for the reply! I was having a hard time finding handguards locally, I just ordered some bark busters from procycle. I appreciate the transfer of knowledge I get from channels like yours. Bash plate is next. The t7 is quite a bit different than my dr650. I feel like I'm on a space shuttle when I ride the yamaha 😂. Do you think that engine guards are a necessity? The bars on the t7 seem to move alot more than the bars on my dr650 and yz250. I'm thinking that the handguards on the t7 wouldn't keep the plastics on the bike from hitting the ground, like my other two bikes. Due to the extra range of motion on the t7. 20,000 km is awesome! I'm looking forward to checking out more of your videos!

Sounds great. Regarding the crash bars…no they are definitely not necessary. The Barkbusters take the hits for you (Trust me, I’ve dropped it enough now). I’ve only got the frontal crash bars fitted so I can attach additional luggage (2x 6ltr Kriega bags). I’m toying with the idea of removing them to reduce unnecessary weight but I generally do long distance riding so the extra weight distribution of kit is helpful. Personally I would go for a plastic bash guard if I was buying again, sacrificial but much lighter than the beefy Yamaha one I have.

Yeah I noticed that. The explore and the extreme version both came out in the early part of 2023 (after I had ordered my bike). Curiously the explore only came out in a select few European countries, including Germany, where I am. I would have been tempted by the explore due to the lower height but you have to cough up for the pannier frames that I didn’t need so it actually made more sense just to get the standard and lower it myself. I didn’t need a larger screen and the tank isn’t actually bigger it’s the same as standard (16 ltr). But you make an interesting point. Whydo only a few countries get these models?
